The Variable Series Reactors (VSRs) can efficiently control the power flow through the adjustment of the line reactance. When they are appropriately allocated in the power network, the transmission congestion and generation cost can be reduced. This paper proposes a planning model to optimally allocate VSRs considering AC constraints and multi-scenarios including base case and contingencies. The planning model is originally a non-convex large scale mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP), which is generally intractable. The proposed Benders approach decomposes the MINLP model into a mixed integer linear program (MILP) master problem and a number of nonlinear subproblems. Numerical case studies based on IEEE 118-bus demonstrate the high performance of the proposed approach.

Low levels of inertia due to increasing renewable penetration bring several challenges, such as the higher need for Primary Frequency Response (PFR). A potential solution to mitigate this problem consists on reducing the largest possible power loss i n the grid. This paper develops a novel modelling framework to analyse the benefits of such approach. A new frequency-constrained Stochastic Unit Commitment (SUC) is proposed here, which allows to dynamically reduce the largest possible loss in the optimisation problem. Furthermore, the effect of load damping is included by means of an approximation, while its effect is typically neglected in previous frequency-secured-UC studies. Through several case studies, we demonstrate that reducing the largest loss could significantly decrease operational cost and carbon emissions in the future Great Britains grid.
As a typical approach of demand response (DR), direct load control (DLC) enables load service entity (LSE) to adjust electricity usage of home-end customers for peak shaving during DLC event. Households are connected in low voltage distribution netwo rks, which is three phase unbalanced. However, existing works have not considered the network constraints and operational constraints of three phase unbalanced distribution systems, thus may ending up with decisions that deviate from reality or even infeasible in real world. This paper proposes residential DLC considering associated constraints of three phase unbalanced distribution networks. Numerical tests on a modified IEEE benchmark system demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
There is an increase in usage of smaller cells or femtocells to improve performance and coverage of next-generation heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNets). However, the interference caused by femtocells to neighboring cells is a limiting performan ce factor in dense HetNets. This interference is being managed via distributed resource allocation methods. However, as the density of the network increases so does the complexity of such resource allocation methods. Yet, unplanned deployment of femtocells requires an adaptable and self-organizing algorithm to make HetNets viable. As such, we propose to use a machine learning approach based on Q-learning to solve the resource allocation problem in such complex networks. By defining each base station as an agent, a cellular network is modelled as a multi-agent network. Subsequently, cooperative Q-learning can be applied as an efficient approach to manage the resources of a multi-agent network. Furthermore, the proposed approach considers the quality of service (QoS) for each user and fairness in the network. In comparison with prior work, the proposed approach can bring more than a four-fold increase in the number of supported femtocells while using cooperative Q-learning to reduce resource allocation overhead.

Fourier analysis of the light curve of AC And from the HATNet database reveals the rich frequency structure of this object. Above 30 components are found down to the amplitude of 3 mmag. Several of these frequencies are not the linear combinations of the three basic components. We detect period increase in all three components that may lend support to the Pop I classification of this variable.
