We study electron-positron pair creation by a strong and constant electric field superimposed with a weaker transversal plane wave which is incident perpendicularly (or under some angle). Comparing the fully non-perturbative approach based on the world-line instanton method with a perturbative expansion into powers of the strength of the weaker plane wave, we find good agreement - provided that the latter is carried out to sufficiently high orders. As usual for the dynamically assisted Sauter-Schwinger effect, the additional plane wave induces an exponential enhancement of the pair-creation probability if the combined Keldysh parameter exceeds a certain threshold.

Recently it has been found that the superposition of a strong and slow electric field with a weaker and faster pulse can significantly enhance the probability for non-perturbative electron-positron pair creation out of the vacuum -- the dynamically a ssisted Sauter-Schwinger effect. Via the WKB method, we estimate the momentum dependence of the pair creation probability and compare it to existing numerical results. Besides the theoretical interest, a better understanding of this pair creation mechanism should be helpful for the planned experiments aiming at its detection.

A detector undergoing a huge acceleration measures a thermal distribution with the Unruh temperature out of the Minkowski vacuum. Though such huge accelerations occur naturally in astrophysics and gravity, one may design untraintense laser facility t o detect the Unruh effect and simulate laboratory astrophysics. We derive the QED vacuum polarization and the vacuum persistence amplitude as well as the Schwinger pair creation in an accelerating frame when a constant electric field exists in the Minkowski spacetime. We advance a thermal interpretation of Schwinger pair creation in the Rindler space.
Magnetic skyrmions can be considered as topologically protected localized vortex-like spin textures. Due to their stability, their small size, and the possibility to move them by low electric currents they are promising candidates for spintronic devi ces. Without violating topological protection, it is possible to create skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs, as long as the total charge remains unchanged. We derive a skyrmion equation of motion which reveals how spin-polarized charge currents create skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs. It allows to identify general prerequisites for the pair creation process. We corroborate these general principles by numerical simulations. On a lattice, where topological protection becomes imperfect, the antiskyrmion partner of the pairs is annihilated and only the skyrmion survives. This eventually changes the total skyrmion number and yields a new way of creating and controlling skyrmions.
In this paper, we give formal results of Schwinger pair production correction in thermal systems with external background field by using the evolution operator method of thermo field dynamics, where especially tree level correction of thermal photons is considered with linear response approaches by an effective mass shift. We consider initial systems in two types of vacuums as zero temperature and thermal vacuum, respectively, with correction of thermal photons is or not included. As an example we give results of these corrections to pair production for a constant external background electric field.
We study the Mott phase of the Bose-Hubbard model on a tilted lattice. On the (Gutzwiller) mean-field level, the tilt has no effect -- but quantum fluctuations entail particle-hole pair creation via tunneling. For small potential gradients (long-wave length limit), we derive a quantitative analogy to the Sauter-Schwinger effect, i.e., electron-positron pair creation out of the vacuum by an electric field. For large tilts, we obtain resonant tunneling related to Bloch oscillations.
