We study the Mott phase of the Bose-Hubbard model on a tilted lattice. On the (Gutzwiller) mean-field level, the tilt has no effect -- but quantum fluctuations entail particle-hole pair creation via tunneling. For small potential gradients (long-wavelength limit), we derive a quantitative analogy to the Sauter-Schwinger effect, i.e., electron-positron pair creation out of the vacuum by an electric field. For large tilts, we obtain resonant tunneling related to Bloch oscillations.

We study the Bose and Fermi Hubbard model in the (formal) limit of large coordination numbers $Zgg1$. Via an expansion into powers of $1/Z$, we establish a hierarchy of correlations which facilitates an approximate analytical derivation of the time-e volution of the reduced density matrices for one and two sites etc. With this method, we study the quantum dynamics (starting in the ground state) after a quantum quench, i.e., after suddenly switching the tunneling rate $J$ from zero to a finite value, which is still in the Mott regime. We find that the reduced density matrices approach a (quasi) equilibrium state after some time. For one lattice site, this state can be described by a thermal state (within the accuracy of our approximation). However, the (quasi) equilibrium state of the reduced density matrices for two sites including the correlations cannot be described by a thermal state. Thus, real thermalization (if it occurs) should take much longer time. This behavior has already been observed in other scenarios and is sometimes called ``pre-thermalization. Finally, we compare our results to numerical simulations for finite lattices in one and two dimensions and find qualitative agreement.

We show that a two-atoms Bose-Hubbard model exhibits three different phases in the behavior of thermal entanglement in its parameter space. These phases are demonstrated to be traceable back to the existence of quantum phase transitions in the same s ystem. Significant similarities between the behaviors of thermal entanglement and heat capacity in the parameter space are brought to light thus allowing to interpret the occurrence and the meaning of all these three phases.
We theoretically explore quantum correlation properties of a dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer in presence of a coherent drive. In particular, we focus on the regime where the semiclassical theory predicts a bifurcation with a spontaneous spatial symmet ry breaking. The critical behavior in a well defined thermodynamical limit of large excitation numbers is considered and analyzed within a Gaussian approach. The case of a finite boson density is also examined by numerically integrating the Lindblad master equation for the density matrix. We predict the critical behavior around the bifurcation points accompanied with large quantum correlations of the mixed steady-state, in particular exhibiting a peak in the logarithmic entanglement negativity.
We simulate numerically the dynamics of strongly correlated bosons in a two-leg ladder subject to a time-dependent energy bias between the two chains. When all atoms are initially in the leg with higher energy, we find a drastic reduction of the inte r-chain particle transfer for slow linear sweeps, in quantitative agreement with recent experiments. This effect is preceded by a rapid broadening of the quasi-momentum distribution of atoms, signaling the presence of a bath of low-energy excitations in the chains. We further investigate the scenario of quantum quenches to fixed values of the energy bias. We find that for large enough density the momentum distribution relaxes to that of an equilibrium thermal state with the same energy.

We investigate the dynamical phase transition of two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlinear tunneling, which is trapped inside a double-well and dispersively coupled to a single mode of a high-finesse optical cavity with one moving end mir ror driven by a single mode standing field. The nonlinear tunneling interaction leads to an increase of stability points and riches the phase diagram of the system. It is shown that the appearance of the moving end mirror speeds up the tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates, which makes population difference between two wells and regulates the number of the stability points of the system.
