Nuclear reactors are strong, pure and well localized sources of electron antineutrinos with energies in the few MeV range. Therefore they provide a suitable environment to study neutrino properties, in particular neutrino oscillation parameters. Recent predictions of the expected antineutrino flux at nuclear reactors are about 6% higher than the average rate measured in different experiments. This discrepancy, known as the reactor antineutrino anomaly, is significant at the 2.5{sigma} level. Several new experiments are searching for the origin of this observed neutrino deficit. One hypothesis to be tested is an oscillation to another neutrino state. In a three flavor model reactor neutrinos do not oscillate at baselines below 100 m. Hence, if such an oscillation is observed, it would imply the existence of at least one light sterile neutrino state not participating in weak interactions. Such a discovery would open the gate for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

In the standard model of the elementary particles, the number of neutrino flavor is three. However, there have been indications of existence of 4th neutrino, called sterile neutrino, in some neutrino oscillation related experiments. A number of exper iments are planned to test whether such indications are true or not. Among them, experiments which use neutrinos from pi+, K+, mu+ decay at rest (DAR) are promising because the energy spectra of neutrinos are very well known and clean oscillation measurements are possible. In this proceedings, properties of such DAR neutrinos and LSND, JSNS2, OscSNS and KPipe experiments are briefly introduced.

For a long time there were 3 main experimental indications in favor of the existence of sterile neutrinos: $bar{ u_e}$ appearance in the $bar{ u_mu}$ beam in the LSND experiment, $bar{ u_e}$ flux deficit in comparison with theoretical expectations in reactor experiments, and $ u_e$ deficit in calibration runs with radioactive sources in the Ga solar neutrino experiments SAGE and GALEX. All three problems can be explained by the existence of sterile neutrinos with the mass square difference in the ballpark of $1~mathrm{eV^2}$. Recently the MiniBooNE collaboration observed electron (anti)neutrino appearance in the muon (anti)neutrino beams. The significance of the effect reaches 6.0$sigma$ level when combined with the LSND result. Even more recently the NEUTRINO-4 collaboration claimed the observation of $bar{ u_e}$ oscillations to sterile neutrinos with a significance slightly higher than 3$sigma$. If these results are confirmed, New Physics beyond the Standard Model would be required. More than 10 experiments are devoted to searches of sterile neutrinos. Six very short baseline reactor experiments are taking data just now. We review the present results and perspectives of these experiments.
Medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiments (MBRO) have been proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy (MH) and to make precise measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters. With sufficient statistics, better than ~3%/sqrt {E} energy resolution and well understood energy non-linearity, MH can be determined by analyzing oscillation signals driven by the atmospheric mass-squared difference in the survival spectrum of reactor antineutrinos. With such high performance MBRO detectors, oscillation parameters, such as sin^22theta_{12}, Delta m^2_{21}, and Delta m^2_{32}, can be measured to sub-percent level, which enables a future test of the PMNS matrix unitarity to ~1% level and helps the forthcoming neutrinoless double beta decay experiments to constrain the allowed <m_{beta beta}> values. Combined with results from the next generation long-baseline beam neutrino and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments, the MH determination sensitivity can reach higher levels. In addition to the neutrino oscillation physics, MBRO detectors can also be utilized to study geoneutrinos, astrophysical neutrinos and proton decay. We propose to start a U.S. R&D program to identify, quantify and fulfill the key challenges essential for the success of MBRO experiments.
The spectral shape of reactor antineutrinos measured in recent experiments shows anomalies in comparison to neutrino reference spectra. New precision measurements of the reactor neutrino spectra as well as more complete input in nuclear data bases ar e needed to resolve the observed discrepancies between models and experimental results. This article proposes the combination of experiments at reactors which are highly enriched in ${}^{235}$U with commercial reactors with typically lower enrichment to gain new insights into the origin of the anomalous neutrino spectrum. The presented method clarifies, if the spectral anomaly is either solely or not at all related to the predicted ${}^{235}$U spectrum. Considering the current improvements of the energy scale uncertainty of present-day experiments, a significance of three sigma and above can be reached. As an example, we discuss the option of a direct comparison of the measured shape in the currently running Double Chooz near detector and the upcoming Stereo experiment. A quantitative feasibility study emphasizes that a precise understanding of the energy scale systematics is a crucial prerequisite in recent and next generation experiments investigating the spectral anomaly.
We present results from global fits to the available reactor antineutrino dataset, as of Fall 2019, to determine the global preference for a fourth, sterile neutrino. We have separately considered experiments that measure the integrated inverse-beta decay (IBD) rate from those that measure the energy spectrum of IBD events at one or more locations. The software used is the newly developed GLoBESfit tool set which is based on the publicly available GLoBES framework and will be released as open-source software.
