In classical and quantum frustrated magnets the interactions in combination with the lattice structure impede the spins to order in optimal configurations at zero temperature. The theoretical interest in their classical realisations has been boosted by the artificial manufacture of materials with these properties, that are of flexible design. This note summarises work on the use of vertex models to study bidimensional spin-ices samples, done in collaboration with R. A. Borzi, M. V. Ferreyra, L. Foini, G. Gonnella, S. A. Grigera, P. Guruciaga, D. Levis, A. Pelizzola and M. Tarzia, in recent years. It is an invited contribution to a J. Stat. Phys. special issue dedicated to the memory of Leo P. Kadanoff.

In this letter, we have constructed and experimentally investigated frustrated arrays of dipoles forming two-dimensional artificial spin ices with different lattice parameters (rectangular arrays with horizontal and vertical lattice spacings denoted by $a$ and $b$ respectively). Arrays with three different ratios $gamma =a/b = sqrt{2}$, $sqrt{3}$ and $sqrt{4}$ are studied. Theoretical calculations of low-energy demagnetized configurations for these same parameters are also presented. Experimental data for demagnetized samples confirm most of the theoretical results. However, the highest energy topology (doubly-charged monopoles) does not emerge in our theoretical model, while they are seen in experiments for large enough $gamma$. Our results also insinuate that magnetic monopoles may be almost free in rectangular lattices with a critical ratio $gamma = gamma_{c} = sqrt{3}$, supporting previous theoretical predictions.
We present the dynamic response of a connected Kagome artificial spin ice with emphasis on the effect of the vertex magnetization configuration on the mode characteristics. We use broadband ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy and micromagnetic simulations to identify and characterize resonant modes. We find the mode frequencies of elongated, single-domain film segments not only depend on the orientation of their easy-axis with respect to the applied magnetic field, but also depend on the vertex magnetization configuration, which suggests control over the FMR mode can be accomplished by altering the vertex magnetization. Moreover, we study differences between the vertex center mode (VCM) and the localized domain wall (LDW) mode. We show that the LDW mode acts as a signature of the domain wall (DW) nucleation process and the DW dynamics active during segment reversal events. The results show the VCM and LDW modes can be controlled using a field protocol, which has important implications for applications in magnonic and spintronic devices.

Spin ice materials, such as Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7, have been the subject of much interest for over the past fifteen years. Their low temperature strongly correlated state can be mapped onto the proton disordered state of common water ice and, consequ ently, spin ices display the same low temperature residual Pauling entropy as water ice. Interestingly, it was found in a previous study [X. Ke {it et. al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 99}, 137203 (2007)] that, upon dilution of the magnetic rare-earth ions (Dy^{3+} and Ho^{3+}) by non-magnetic Yttrium (Y^{3+}) ions, the residual entropy depends {it non-monotonically} on the concentration of Y^{3+} ions. In the present work, we report results from Monte Carlo simulations of site-diluted microscopic dipolar spin ice models (DSIM) that account quantitatively for the experimental specific heat measurements, and thus also for the residual entropy, as a function of dilution, for both Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7. The main features of the dilution physics displayed by the magnetic specific heat data are quantitatively captured by the diluted DSIM up to, and including, 85% of the magnetic ions diluted (x=1.7). The previously reported departures in the residual entropy between Dy2Ti2O7 versus Ho2Ti2O7, as well as with a site-dilution variant of Paulings approximation, are thus rationalized through the site-diluted DSIM. For 90% (x=1.8) and 95% (x=1.9) of the magnetic ions diluted, we find a significant discrepancy between the experimental and Monte Carlo specific heat results. We discuss some possible reasons for this disagreement.
We present the numbers of ice model and eight-vertex model configurations (with Boltzmann factors equal to one), I(n) and E(n) respectively, on the two-dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) at stage $n$. For the eight-vertex model, the number of config urations is $E(n)=2^{3(3^n+1)/2}$ and the entropy per site, defined as $lim_{v to infty} ln E(n)/v$ where $v$ is the number of vertices on SG(n), is exactly equal to $ln 2$. For the ice model, the upper and lower bounds for the entropy per site $lim_{v to infty} ln I(n)/v$ are derived in terms of the results at a certain stage. As the difference between these bounds converges quickly to zero as the calculated stage increases, the numerical value of the entropy can be evaluated with more than a hundred significant figures accurate. The corresponding result of ice model on the generalized two-dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG_b(n) with $b=3$ is also obtained. For the generalized vertex model on SG_3(n), the number of configurations is $2^{(8 times 6^n +7)/5}$ and the entropy per site is equal to $frac87 ln 2$. The general upper and lower bounds for the entropy per site for arbitrary $b$ are conjectured.
Motivated by recent realizations of Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ spin ice thin films, and more generally by the physics of confined gauge fields, we study a model of spin ice thin film with surfaces perpendicular to the $[001]$ cubic axis. The resulting open boundaries make half of the bonds on the interfaces inequivalent. By tuning the strength of these inequivalent orphan bonds, dipolar interactions induce a surface ordering equivalent to a two-dimensional crystallization of magnetic surface charges. This surface ordering can also be expected on the surfaces of bulk crystals. In analogy with partial wetting in soft matter, spins just below the surface are more correlated than in the bulk, but emph{not} ordered. For ultrathin films made of one cubic unit cell, once the surfaces are ordered, a square ice phase is stabilized over a finite temperature window, as confirmed by its entropy and the presence of pinch points in the structure factor. Ultimately, the square ice degeneracy is lifted at lower temperature and the system orders in analogy with the well-known $F$-transition of the $6$-vertex model.
