The problem of the gauge hierarchy is brought up in a hypercomplex scheme for a U(1) field theory; in such a scheme a compact gauge group is deformed through a gamma-parameter that varies along a non-compact internal direction, transverse to the U(1) compact one, and thus an additional SO(1,1) gauge symmetry is incorporated. This transverse direction can be understood as an extra internal dimension, which will control the spontaneous symmetry breakdown, and will allow us to establish a mass hierarchy. In this mechanism there is no brane separation to be stabilized as in the braneworld paradigm, however, a different kind of fine-tuning is needed in order to generate the wished electroweak/Planck hierarchy. By analyzing the effective self-interactions and mass terms of the theory, an interesting duality is revealed between the real and hybrid parts of the effective potential. This duality relates the weak and strong self-interaction regimes of the theory, due to the fact that both mass terms and self-coupling constants appear as one-parameter flows in gamma. Additionally the gamma-deformation will establish a flow for the electromagnetic coupling that mimics the renormalization group flow for the charge in QED.

We consider a general gauge theory with independent generators and study the problem of gauge-invariant deformation of initial gauge-invariant classical action. The problem is formulated in terms of BV-formalism and is reduced to describing the gener al solution to the classical master equation. We show that such general solution is determined by two arbitrary generating functions of the initial fields. As a result, we construct in explicit form the deformed action and the deformed gauge generators in terms of above functions. We argue that the deformed theory must in general be non-local. The developed deformation procedure is applied to Abelian vector field theory and we show that it allows to derive non-Abelain Yang-Mills theory. This procedure is also applied to free massless integer higher spin field theory and leads to local cubic interaction vertex for such fields.

We review the gauge hierarchy problem in the standard model. We discuss the meaning of the quadratic divergence in terms of the Wilsonian renormalization group. Classical scale symmetry, which prohibits dimensionful parameters in the bare action, cou ld play a key role for the understanding of the origin of the electroweak scale. We discuss the scale-generation mechanism, i.e. scalegenesis in scale invariant theories. In this paper, we introduce a scale invariant extension of the SM based on a strongly interacting scalar-gauge theory. It is discussed that asymptotically safe quantum gravity provides a hint about solutions to the gauge hierarchy problem.

We formulate the most general gravitational models with constant negative curvature (hyperbolic gravity) on an arbitrary orientable two-dimensional surface of genus $g$ with $b$ circle boundaries in terms of a $text{PSL}(2,mathbb R)_partial$ gauge th eory of flat connections. This includes the usual JT gravity with Dirichlet boundary conditions for the dilaton field as a special case. A key ingredient is to realize that the correct gauge group is not the full $text{PSL}(2,mathbb R)$, but a subgroup $text{PSL}(2,mathbb R)_{partial}$ of gauge transformations that go to $text{U}(1)$ local rotations on the boundary. We find four possible classes of boundary conditions, with associated boundary terms, that can be applied to each boundary component independently. Class I has five inequivalent variants, corresponding to geodesic boundaries of fixed length, cusps, conical defects of fixed angle or large cylinder-shaped asymptotic regions with boundaries of fixed lengths and extrinsic curvatures one or greater than one. Class II precisely reproduces the usual JT gravity. In particular, the crucial extrinsic curvature boundary term of the usual second order formulation is automatically generated by the gauge theory boundary term. Class III is a more exotic possibility for which the integrated extrinsic curvature is fixed on the boundary. Class IV is the Legendre transform of class II; the constraint of fixed length is replaced by a boundary cosmological constant term.
We construct a non-commutative kappa-Minkowski deformation of U(1) gauge theory, following a general approach, recently proposed in JHEP 2008 (2020) 041. We obtain an exact (all orders in the non-commutativity parameter) expression for both the defor med gauge transformations and the deformed field strength, which is covariant under these transformations. The corresponding Yang-Mills Lagrangian is gauge covariant and reproduces the Maxwell Lagrangian in the commutative limit. Gauge invariance of the action functional requires a non-trivial integration measure which, in the commutative limit, does not reduce to the trivial one. We discuss the physical meaning of such a nontrivial commutative limit, relating it to a nontrivial space-time curvature of the undeformed theory. Moreover, we propose a rescaled kappa-Minkowski non-commutative structure, which exhibits a standard flat commutative limit.
We analyze the general covariant energy-momentum tensor of the gravitational system in genreal five-dimensional cosmological brane-world models. Then through calculating this energy-momentum for the cosmological generalization of the Randall-Sundrum model, which includes the original RS model as the static limit, we are able to show that the weakness of the gravitation on the visible brane is a general feature of this model. This is the origin of the gauge hierarchy from a gravitational point of view. Our results are also consistent with the fact that a gravitational system has vanishing total energy.
