We report a novel design of a compact wavelength add-drop multiplexer utilizing dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs). The DLSPPW-based configuration exploits routing properties of directional couplers and filtering abilities of Bragg gratings. We present practical realization of a 20-$mu$m-long device operating at telecom wavelengths that can reroute optical signals separated by approximately 70 nm in the wavelength band. We characterize the performance of the fabricated structures using scanning near-field optical microscopy as well as leakage-radiation microscopy and support our findings with numerical simulations.
Terahertz (THz) band is considered as the next frontier in wireless communications. The emerging THz multiplexing techniques are expected to dramatically increase the information capacity of THz communications far beyond a single channel limit. In th
is work, we explore the THz frequency-division multiplexing modality enabled by novel add-drop multiplexer (ADM) design. Based on modular two-wire plasmonic waveguides fabricated using additive manufacturing and metallization techniques, we demonstrate four-port THz ADMs containing grating-loaded side couplers for operation at ~140 GHz carrier frequency. Particular attention is payed to the design of plasmonic waveguide Bragg gratings and directional couplers capable of splitting broadband THz light in spectral and spatial domains, respectively. Finally, we demonstrate multiplexing and demultiplexing of THz signals with bit rates up to 6 Gbps using the developed ADMs. We believe that proposed plasmonic circuits hold strong potential to provide robust integrated solutions for analogue signal processing in the upcoming THz communications.
We report a novel approach for on-chip electrical detection of the radiation guided by dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPW) and DLSPPW-based components. The detection is realized by fabricating DLSPPW components on the surf
ace of a gold (Au) pad supported by a silicon (Si) substrate supplied with aluminum pads facilitating electrical connections, with the gold pad being perforated in a specific locations below the DLSPPWs in order to allow a portion of the DLSPPW-guided radiation to leak into the Si-substrate, where it is absorbed and electrically detected. We present two-dimensional photocurrent maps obtained when the laser beam is scanning across the gold pad containing the fabricated DLSPPW components that are excited via grating couplers located at the DLSPPW tapered terminations. By comparing photocurrent signals obtained when scanning over a DLSPPW straight waveguide with those related to a DLSPPW racetrack resonator, we first determine the background signal level and then the corrected DLSPPW resonator spectral response, which is found consistent with that obtained from full wave numerical simulations. The approach developed can be extended to other plasmonic waveguide configurations and advantageously used for rapid characterization of complicated plasmonic circuits.
In this article, a 2D plasmonic waveguide loaded with all dielectric anisotropic metamaterial, consisting of alternative layers of Si-SiO2, has been theoretically proposed and numerically analyzed. Main characteristics of waveguide i.e. propagation c
onstant, propagation length and normalized mode area have been calculated for different values of ridge width and height at telecommunication wavelength. The respective 1D structure of the waveguide has been analytically solved for the anisotropic ridge as a single uniaxial medium with dielectric tensor defined by Effective Medium Theory (EMT). The 2D structure has been analyzed numerically through FEM simulation using Mode analysis module in Comsol Multiphysics. Both the EMT and real multilayer structure have been considered in numerical simulations. Such structure with all dielectric metamaterial provides an extra degree of freedom namely fill factor, fraction of Si layer in a Si-SiO2 unit cell, to tune the propagation characteristics compared to the conventional DLSSP waveguide. A wide range of variations in all the characteristics have been observed for different fill factor values. Besides, the effect of the first interface layer has also been considered. Though all dielectric metamaterial has already been utilized in photonic waveguide as cladding, the implementation in plasmonic waveguide has not been investigated yet to our best knowledge. The proposed device might be a potential in deep sub-wavelength optics, PIC and optoelectronics.
Topological photonics have led to the robust optical behavior of the device, which has solved the problem of the influence of manufacturing defects and perturbations on the device performance. Meanwhile, temporal coupled-mode theory (t-CMT) has been
developed and applied widely. However, the t-CMT of cascaded coupling cavities (CCC) system and its corresponding high-order filter has yet to be established. Here the t-CMT of CCC system is established based on the existing t-CMT. By combining the CCC with the topological waveguides, a versatile design scheme of the high-order nonreciprocal add-drop filter (HONAF) is proposed. The relationship between coupling effect of cavities and transmission and filtering performance of HONAF is analyzed quantitatively, then a method to improve the transmission efficiency and quality factor of the filter is given. Based on the combination of gyromagnetic photonic crystals and decagonal Penrose-type photonic quasicrystals, a HONAF is proposed. The transmission and filtering performance of the HONAF are numerically analyzed, which verifies the consistency between the theoretical prediction and the numerical simulation. The t-CMT of CCC system established can be widely used in the coupled resonator optical waveguides and their related systems. The designed HONAF can also be applied and compatible to microwave communication system.
Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are of great interest for on-chip nanophotonics due to their unique optoelectronic properties. Here, we propose and realize coupling of tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayers to circular Bragg gr
ating structures to achieve enhanced emission. The interaction between WSe2 and the resonant mode of the structure results in Purcell-enhanced emission, while the symmetric geometrical structure improves the directionality of the out-coupling stream of emitted photons. Furthermore, this hybrid structure produces a record high contrast of the spin valley readout (> 40%) revealed by the polarization resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Our results are promising for on-chip integration of TMDC monolayers with optical resonators for nanophotonic circuits.
