Conserved directed-percolation (C-DP) and the depinning transition of a disordered elastic interface belong to the same universality class as has been proven very recently by Le Doussal and Wiese [Phys. Rev. Lett.~textbf{114}, 110601 (2015)] through a mapping of the field theory for C-DP onto that of the quenched Edwards-Wilkinson model. Here, we present an alternative derivation of the C-DP field theoretic functional, starting with the coherent state path integral formulation of the C-DP and then applying the Grassberger-transformation, that avoids the disadvantages of the so-called Doi-shift. We revisit the aforementioned mapping with focus on a specific term in the field theoretic functional that has been problematic in the past when it came to assessing its relevance. We show that this term is redundant in the sense of the renormalization group.

The roughening of interfaces moving in inhomogeneous media is investigated by numerical integration of the phenomenological stochastic differential equation proposed by Kardar, Parisi, and Zhang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 889, (1986)] with quenched noise (QKPZ). We express the evolution equations for the mean height and the roughness into two contributions: the local and the lateral one. We compare this two contributions with the ones obtained for two directed percolation deppining models (DPD): the Tang and Leschhorn model [Phys. Rev A 45, R8309 (1992)] and the Buldyrev et al. model [Phys. Rev. A 45, R8313 (1992)] by Braunstein al. [J. Phys. A 32, 1801 (1999); Phys. Rev. E 59, 4243 (1999)]. Even these models have being classified in the same universality class that the QKPZ the contributions to the growing mechanisms are quite different. The lateral contribution in the DPD models, leads to an increasing of the roughness near the criticality while in the QKPZ equation this contribution always flattens the roughness. These results suggest that the QKPZ equation does not describe properly the DPD models even when the exponents derived from this equation are similar to the one obtained from simulations of these models.

These lectures provide an introduction to the directed percolation and directed animals problems, from a physicists point of view. The probabilistic cellular automaton formulation of directed percolation is introduced. The planar duality of the diode -resistor-insulator percolation problem in two dimensions, and relation of the directed percolation to undirected first passage percolation problem are described. Equivalence of the $d$-dimensional directed animals problem to $(d-1)$-dimensional Yang-Lee edge-singularity problem is established. Self-organized critical formulation of the percolation problem, which does not involve any fine-tuning of coupling constants to get critical behavior is briefly discussed.

We study the nature of the synchronization transition in spatially extended systems by discussing a simple stochastic model. An analytic argument is put forward showing that, in the limit of discontinuous processes, the transition belongs to the dire cted percolation (DP) universality class. The analysis is complemented by a detailed investigation of the dependence of the first passage time for the amplitude of the difference field on the adopted threshold. We find the existence of a critical threshold separating the regime controlled by linear mechanisms from that controlled by collective phenomena. As a result of this analysis we conclude that the synchronization transition belongs to the DP class also in continuous models. The conclusions are supported by numerical checks on coupled map lattices too.

We introduce and solve a model of hardcore particles on a one dimensional periodic lattice which undergoes an active-absorbing state phase transition at finite density. In this model an occupied site is defined to be active if its left neighbour is o ccupied and the right neighbour is vacant. Particles from such active sites hop stochastically to their right. We show that, both the density of active sites and the survival probability vanish as the particle density is decreased below half. The critical exponents and spatial correlations of the model are calculated exactly using the matrix product ansatz. Exact analytical study of several variations of the model reveals that these non-equilibrium phase transitions belong to a new universality class different from the generic active-absorbing-state phase transition, namely directed percolation.
We study directed rigidity percolation (equivalent to directed bootstrap percolation) on three different lattices: square, triangular, and augmented triangular. The first two of these display a first-order transition at p=1, while the augmented trian gular lattice shows a continuous transition at a non-trivial p_c. On the augmented triangular lattice we find, by extensive numerical simulation, that the directed rigidity percolation transition belongs to the same universality class as directed percolation. The same conclusion is reached by studying its surface critical behavior, i.e. the spreading of rigidity from finite clusters close to a non-rigid wall. Near the discontinuous transition at p=1 on the triangular lattice, we are able to calculate the finite-size behavior of the density of rigid sites analytically. Our results are confirmed by numerical simulation.
