The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positron polarization up to 82% have been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized positron beam physics to a wide community.

The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons (PEPPo) experiment has demonstrated the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the bremsstrahlung radiation of a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positro n polarization up to 82% has been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19 MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. Combined with the high intensity and high polarization performances of polarized electron sources, this technique extends efficient polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron accelerators. This presentation reviews the PEPPo proof-of-principle experiment and addresses the perspectives for future applications.
The SPIN@FERMI collaboration has updated its 1991-95 Reports on the acceleration of polarized protons in Fermilabs Main Injector, which was commissioned by Fermilab. This Updated Report summarizes some updated Physics Goals for a 120-150 GeV/c polari zed proton beam. It also contains an updated discussion of the Modifications and Hardware needed for a polarized beam in the Main Injector, along with an updated Schedule and Budget.

Future colliders that require low-emittance highly-polarized electron beams are the main motivation for developing a polarized rf gun. However there are both technical and physics issues in generating highly polarized electron beams using rf guns tha t remain to be resolved. The PWT design offers promising features that may facilitate solutions to technical problems such as field emission and poor vacuum. Physics issues such as emission time now seem to be satisfactorily resolved. Other issues, such as the effect of magnetic fields at the cathode-both those associated with the rf field and those imposed by schemes to produce flat beams-are still open questions. Potential solution of remaining problems will be discussed in the context of the PWT design.
Full exploitation of the physics potential of a future International Linear Collider will require the use of polarized electron and positron beams. Experiment E166 at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) has demonstrated a scheme in which an electron beam passes through a helical undulator to generate photons (whose first-harmonic spectrum extended to 7.9MeV) with circular polarization, which are then converted in a thin target to generate longitudinally polarized positrons and electrons. The experiment was carried out with a one-meter-long, 400-period, pulsed helical undulator in the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) operated at 46.6GeV. Measurements of the positron polarization have been performed at five positron energies from 4.5 to 7.5MeV. In addition, the electron polarization has been determined at 6.7MeV, and the effect of operating the undulator with a ferrofluid was also investigated. To compare the measurements with expectations, detailed simulations were made with an upgraded version of Geant4 that includes the dominant polarization-dependent interactions of electrons, positrons, and photons with matter. The measurements agree with calculations, corresponding to 80% polarization for positrons near 6MeV and 90% for electrons near 7MeV.

Charge symmetry in hadronic reactions, either verified or violated, appears to be in some circumstances a mandatory guide for model-independent understanding of the structure and dynamics at play. The recent demonstration of the PEPPo concept for the production of polarized positrons opens new physics perspectives at the Jefferson Laboratory. Polarized positron beams, in complement to existing polarized electron beams, are shown to bring multi-Physics opportunities.
