We study a lattice model of interacting Dirac fermions in $(2+1)$ dimension space-time with an SU(4) symmetry. While increasing interaction strength, this model undergoes a {it continuous} quantum phase transition from the weakly interacting Dirac semimetal to a fully gapped and nondegenerate phase without condensing any Dirac fermion bilinear mass operator. This unusual mechanism for mass generation is consistent with recent studies of interacting topological insulators/superconductors, and also consistent with recent progresses in lattice QCD community.

Fermions with one and two Dirac nodes are coupled to in-plane phonons to study a spontaneous transition into the Hall insulating phase. At sufficiently strong electron-phonon interaction a gap appears in the spectrum of fermions, signaling a transiti on into a phase with spontaneously broken parity and time-reversal symmetry. The structure of elementary excitations above the gap in the corresponding phase reveals the presence of scale invariant parity breaking terms which resemble Chern-Simons excitations. Evaluating the Kubo formula for both models we find quantized Hall plateaux in each case, with conductance of binodal model exactly twice as large as of the mononodal model.

I study the prospect of generating mass for symmetry-protected fermions without breaking the symmetry that forbids quadratic mass terms in the Lagrangian. I focus on 1+1 spacetime dimensions in the hope that this can provide guidance for interacting fermions in 3+1 dimensions. I first review the SO(8) Gross-Neveu model and emphasize a subtlety in the triality transformation. Then I focus on the m = 0 manifold of the SO(7) Kitaev-Fidkowski model. I argue that this theory exhibits a phenomenon similar to parity doubling in hadronic physics, and this leads to the conclusion that the fermion propagator vanishes when p = 0. I also briefly explore a connection between this model and the two-channel, single-impurity Kondo effect. This paper may serve as an introduction to topological superconductors for high energy theorists, and perhaps as a taste of elementary particle physics for condensed matter theorists.
We consider zero temperature solutions to the Abelian Higgs model coupled to gravity with a negative cosmological constant. With appropriate choices of parameters, the geometry contains two copies of anti-de Sitter space, one describing conformal inv ariance in the ultraviolet, and one in the infrared. The effective speed of signal propagation is smaller in the infrared. Greens functions and associated transport coefficients can have unusual power law scaling in the infrared. We provide an example in which the real part of the conductivity scales approximately as omega^3.5 for small omega.
States of matter that break time-reversal symmetry are invariably associated with magnetism or circulating currents. Recently, one of us proposed a phase, the directional scalar spin chiral order (DSSCO), as an exception: it breaks time-reversal symm etry via chiral ordering of spins along a particular direction, but is spin-rotation symmetric. In this work, we prove the existence of this state via state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) analysis on a spin-1 chain with nearest-neighbor bilinear-biquadratic interactions and additional third-neighbor ferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange. Despite the large entanglement introduced by the third-neighbor coupling, we are able to access system sizes up to $L=918$ sites. We find first order phase transitions from the DSSCO into the famous Haldane phase as well as a spin-quadrupolar phase where spin nematic correlations dominate. In the Haldane phase, we propose and demonstrate a method for detecting the topological edge states using DMRG that could be useful for other topological phases too.
According to Landau criterion, a phase transition should be first order when cubic terms of order parameters are allowed in its effective Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Recently, it was shown by renormalization group (RG) analysis that continuous trans ition can happen at putatively first-order $Z_3$ transitions in 2D Dirac semimetals and such non-Landau phase transitions were dubbed fermion-induced quantum critical points (FIQCP) [Li et al., Nature Communications 8, 314 (2017)]. The RG analysis, controlled by the 1/$N$ expansion with $N$ the number of flavors of four-component Dirac fermions, shows that FIQCP occurs for $Ngeq N_c$. Previous QMC simulations of a microscopic model of SU($N$) fermions on the honeycomb lattice showed that FIQCP occurs at the transition between Dirac semimetals and Kekule-VBS for $Ngeq 2$. However, precise value of the lower bound $N_c$ has not been established. Especially, the case of $N=1$ has not been explored by studying microscopic models so far. Here, by introducing a generalized SU($N$) fermion model with $N=1$ (namely spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice), we perform large-scale sign-problem-free Majorana quantum Monte Carlo simulations and find convincing evidence of FIQCP for $N=1$. Consequently, our results suggest that FIQCP can occur in 2D Dirac semimetals for all positive integers $Ngeq 1$.
