The contribution of the valence electrons to the Compton profiles of the alkali metals is calculated using density functional theory. We show that the Compton profiles can be modeled by a $q-$Gaussian distribution, which is characterized by an anisotropic, element dependent parameter $q$. Thereby we derive an unexpected scaling behavior of the Compton profiles of all alkali metals.

We report an x-ray scattering study of the microscopic structure of the surface of a liquid alkali metal. The bulk liquid structure factor of the eutectic K67Na33 alloy is characteristic of an ideal mixture, and so shares the properties of an element al liquid alkali metal. Analysis of off-specular diffuse scattering and specular x-ray reflectivity shows that the surface roughness of the K-Na alloy follows simple capillary wave behavior with a surface structure factor indicative of surface induced layering. Comparison of thelow-angle tail of the K67Na33 surface structure factor with the one measured for liquid Ga and In previously suggests that layering is less pronounced in alkali metals. Controlled exposure of the liquid to H2 and O2 gas does not affect the surface structure, indicating that oxide and hydride are not stable at the liquid surface under these experimental conditions.
The anomalous plasmon linewidth dispersion (PLD) measured in K by vom Felde, Sprosser-Prou, and Fink (Phys. Rev. B 40, 10181 (1989)), has been attributed to strong dynamical electron-electron correlations. On the basis of ab initio response calculati ons, and detailed comparison with experiment, we show that the PLD of K is, in fact, dominated by decay into particle-hole excitations involving empty states of d-symmetry. For Li, we shed new light on the physics of the PLD. Our all-electron results illustrate the importance of ab initio methods for the study of electronic excitations.
The van der Waals coefficients and the separation dependent retardation functions of the interactions between the atomically thin films of the multi-layered transition metal molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) dichalcogenides with the alkali atoms are inv estigated. First, we determine the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity and intrinsic carrier density values for different layers of MoS$_2$ by adopting various fitting models to the recently measured optical data reported by Yu and co-workers [Sci. Rep. {bf 5}, 16996 (2015)] using spectroscopy ellipsometry. Then, dynamic electric dipole polarizabilities of the alkali atoms are evaluated very accurately by employing the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. We also demonstrate the explicit change in the above coefficients for different number of layers. These studies are highly useful for the optoelectronics, sensing and storage applications using layered MoS$_2$.
Magnetic Compton scattering is an established tool for probing magnetism in ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic materials with a net spin polarization. Here we show that, counterintuitively, {it non-magnetic} systems can also have a non-zero magnetic Comp ton profile, provided that space-inversion symmetry is broken. The magnetic Compton profile is antisymmetric in momentum and, if the inversion symmetry is broken by an electric-field switchable ferroelectric distortion, can be reversed using an electric field. We show that the underlying physics of the magnetic Compton profile and its electrical control are conveniently described in terms of $k$-space magnetoelectric multipoles, which are reciprocal to the real-space charge dipoles associated with the broken inversion symmetry. Using the prototypical ferroelectric lead titanate, PbTiO$_3$, as an example, we show that the ferroelectric polarization introduces a spin asymmetry in momentum space that corresponds to a pure $k$-space magnetoelectric toroidal moment. This in turn manifests in an antisymmetric magnetic Compton profile which can be reversed using an electric field. Our work suggests an experimental route to directly measuring and tuning hidden $k$-space magnetoelectric multipoles via their magnetic Compton profile.

The relaxation of axisymmetric crystal surfaces with a single facet below the roughening transition is studied via a continuum approach that accounts for step energy g_1 and step-step interaction energy g_3>0. For diffusion-limited kinetics, free-bou ndary and boundary-layer theories are used for self-similar shapes close to the growing facet. For long times and g_3/g_1 < 1, (a) a universal equation is derived for the shape profile, (b) the layer thickness varies as (g_3/g_1)^{1/3}, (c) distinct solutions are found for different g_3/_1, and (d) for conical shapes, the profile peak scales as (g_3/g_1)^{-1/6}. These results compare favorably with kinetic simulations.
