These notes were written for the mini-course Extrema of log-correlated random variables: Principles and Examples at the Introductory School held in January 2015 at the Centre International de Rencontres Mathematiques in Marseille. There have been many advances in the understanding of the high values of log-correlated random fields from the physics and mathematics perspectives in recent years. These fields admit correlations that decay approximately like the logarithm of the inverse of the distance between index points. Examples include branching random walks and the two-dimensional Gaussian free field. In this paper, we review the properties of such fields and survey the progress in describing the statistics of their extremes. The branching random walk is used as a guiding example to prove the correct leading and subleading order of the maximum following the multiscale refinement of the second moment method of Kistler. The approach sheds light on a conjecture of Fyodorov, Hiary & Keating on the maximum of the Riemann zeta function on an interval of the critical line and of the characteristic polynomial of random unitary matrices.

We show that the sequence of moments of order less than 1 of averages of i.i.d. positive random variables is log-concave. For moments of order at least 1, we conjecture that the sequence is log-convex and show that this holds eventually for integer m oments (after neglecting the first $p^2$ terms of the sequence).
Suppose you and your friend both do $n$ tosses of an unfair coin with probability of heads equal to $alpha$. What is the behavior of the probability that you obtain at least $d$ more heads than your friend if you make $r$ additional tosses? We obtain asymptotic and monotonicity/convexity properties for this competing probability as a function of $n$, and demonstrate surprising phase transition phenomenons as parameters $ d, r$ and $alpha$ vary. Our main tools are integral representations based on Fourier analysis.
We give new criteria for ballistic behavior of random walks in random environment which are perturbations of the simple symmetric random walk on $mathbb Z^d$ in dimensions $dge 4$. Our results extend those of Sznitman [Ann. Probab. 31, no. 1, 285-322 (2003)] and the recent ones of Ramirez and Saglietti [Preprint, arXiv:1808.01523], and allow us to exhibit new examples in dimensions $dge 4$ of ballistic random walks which do not satisfy Kalikows condition. Our criteria implies ballisticity whenever the average of the local drift of the walk is not too small compared with an appropriate moment of the centered environment. The proof relies on a concentration inequality of Boucheron et al. [Ann. Probab. 33, no. 2, 514-560 (2005)].

This paper introduces some new characterizations of COM-Poisson random variables. First, it extends Moran-Chatterji characterization and generalizes Rao-Rubin characterization of Poisson distribution to COM-Poisson distribution. Then, it defines the COM-type discrete r.v. ${X_ u }$ of the discrete random variable $X$. The probability mass function of ${X_ u }$ has a link to the Renyi entropy and Tsallis entropy of order $ u $ of $X$. And then we can get the characterization of Stam inequality for COM-type discrete version Fisher information. By using the recurrence formula, the property that COM-Poisson random variables ($ u e 1$) is not closed under addition are obtained. Finally, under the property of not closed under addition of COM-Poisson random variables, a new characterization of Poisson distribution is found.

It is shown that functions defined on ${0,1,...,r-1}^n$ satisfying certain conditions of bounded differences that guarantee sub-Gaussian tail behavior also satisfy a much stronger ``local sub-Gaussian property. For self-bounding and configuration fun ctions we derive analogous locally subexponential behavior. The key tool is Talagrands [Ann. Probab. 22 (1994) 1576--1587] variance inequality for functions defined on the binary hypercube which we extend to functions of uniformly distributed random variables defined on ${0,1,...,r-1}^n$ for $rge2$.
