The study of transfer-induced gamma-decay probabilities is very useful for understanding the surrogate-reaction method and, more generally, for constraining statistical-model calculations. One of the main difficulties in the measurement of gamma-decay probabilities is the determination of the gamma-cascade detection efficiency. In [Nucl. Instrum. Meth. A 700, 59 (2013)] we developed the Extrapolated Efficiency Method (EXEM), a new method to measure this quantity. In this work, we have applied, for the first time, the EXEM to infer the gamma-cascade detection efficiency in the actinide region. In particular, we have considered the 238U(d,p)239U and 238U(3He,d)239Np reactions. We have performed Hauser-Feshbach calculations to interpret our results and to verify the hypothesis on which the EXEM is based. The determination of fission and gamma-decay probabilities of 239Np below the neutron separation energy allowed us to validate the EXEM.

A novel fusion product separator, based on a gas-filled 8 T superconducting solenoid has been developed at the Australian National University. Though the transmission efficiency of the solenoid is very high, precision cross section measurements requi re knowledge of the angular distribution of the evaporation residues. A method has been developed to deduce the angular distribution of the evaporation residues from the laboratory-frame velocity distribution of the evaporation residues measured at the exit of the separator. The features of this method are presented, focusing on the example of $^{34}$S+$^{89}$Y which is compared to an independent measurement of the angular distribution. The establishment of this method now allows the novel solenoidal separator to be used to obtain reliable, precision fusion cross-sections.
We report on a measurement of the neutron detection efficiency in NaI crystals in the Crystal Ball detector obtained from a study of single p0 photoproduction on deuterium using the tagged photon beam at the Mainz Microtron. The results were obtained up to a neutron energy of 400 MeV. They are compared to previous measurements made more than 15 years ago at the pion beam at the BNL AGS.

LXeGRIT - Liquid Xenon Gamma-Ray Imaging Telescope - is the first prototype of a Compton telescope for MeV g-ray astrophysics based on a LXe time projection chamber. One of the most relevant figures of merit for a Compton telescope is the detection e fficiency for g-rays, which depends on diverse contributions such as detector geometry and passive materials, trigger efficiency, dead time, etc. A detailed study of the efficiency of the LXeGRIT instrument, based both on laboratory measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, is presented in this paper.

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) is located at the China Jinping underground laboratory (CJPL) and aims to directly detect the WIMP flux with high sensitivity in the low mass region. Here we present a study of the predicted photon and electron backgrounds including the background contribution of the structure materials of the germanium detector, the passive shielding materials, and the intrinsic radioactivity of the liquid argon that serves as an anti-Compton active shielding detector. A detailed geometry is modeled and the background contribution has been simulated based on the measured radioactivities of all possible components within the GEANT4 program. Then the photon and electron background level in the energy region of interest (<10^-2 events kg-1 day-1 keV-1 (cpkkd)) is predicted based on Monte Carlo simulations. The simulated result is consistent with the design goal of CDEX-10 experiment, 0.1 cpkkd, which shows that the active and passive shield design of CDEX-10 is effective and feasible.
The fast neutrons produced by a calibrated 241Am-Be source were detected by two different Cs2LiYCl6:Ce (CLYC) scintillator detectors. The two cylindrical crystals (1x1 in size) were enriched with more than 99% of 7Li (C7LYC) and with about 95% of 6Li (C6LYC), respectively. Both crystals can detect fast neutrons whereas only C6LYC can also detect thermal neutrons, due to the presence of 6Li. The measurement was performed at the L.A.S.A. Laboratory of INFN and University of Milano (Italy). To identify the neutron events, the Pulse-Shape-Discrimination technique was used. A value for the detection efficiency of the 241Am-Be emitted neutrons, with energy up to 10 MeV, was deduced.
