We present a catalog of 11 multi-planet systems from Campaigns 1 and 2 of the K2 mission. We report the sizes and orbits of 26 planets split between seven 2-planet systems and four 3-planet systems. These planets stem from a systematic search of the K2 photometry for all dwarf stars observed by K2 in these fields. We precisely characterized the host stars with adaptive optics imaging and analysis of high-resolution optical spectra from Keck/HIRES and medium-resolution spectra from IRTF/SpeX. We confirm two planet candidates by mass detection and validate the remaining 24 candidates to $>99%$ confidence. Thirteen planets were previously validated or confirmed by other studies and 24 were previously identified as planet candidates. The planets are mostly smaller than Neptune (21/26 planets) as in the Kepler mission and all have short periods ($P < 50$ d) due to the duration of the K2 photometry. The host stars are relatively bright (most have $Kp < 12.5$ mag) and are amenable to follow-up characterization. For K2-38, we measured precise radial velocities using Keck/HIRES and provide initial estimates of the planet masses. K2-38b is a short-period super-Earth with a radius of $1.55 pm 0.16~R_oplus$, a mass of $12.0 pm 2.9~M_oplus$, and a high density consistent with an iron-rich composition. The outer planet K2-38c is a lower density sub-Neptune-size planet with a radius of $2.42 pm 0.29~R_oplus$ and a mass of $9.9 pm 4.6~M_oplus$ that likely has a substantial envelope. This new planet sample demonstrates the capability of K2 to discover numerous planetary systems around bright stars.

We simulate a Kepler-like observation of a theoretical exoplanet population and we show that the observed orbital period distribution of the Kepler giant planet candidates is best matched by an average stellar specific dissipation function Q_* in the interval 10^6 ~< Q_* ~< 10^7. In that situation, the few super-Earths that are driven to orbital periods P < 1 day by dynamical interactions in multiple-planet systems will survive tidal disruption for a significant fraction of the main-sequence lifetimes of their stellar hosts. Consequently, though these very-hot super-Earths are not characteristic of the overall super-Earth population, their substantial transit probability implies that they should be significant contributors to the full super-Earth population uncovered by Kepler. As a result, the CoRoT-7 system may be the first representative of a population of very-hot super-Earths that we suggest should be found in multiple-planet systems preferentially orbiting the least-dissipative stellar hosts in the Kepler sample.
We confirm the planetary nature of two transiting hot Jupiters discovered by the Kepler spacecrafts K2 extended mission in its Campaign 4, using precise radial velocity measurements from FIES@NOT, HARPS-N@TNG, and the coude spectrograph on the McDona ld Observatory 2.7 m telescope. K2-29 b (EPIC 211089792 b) transits a K1V star with a period of $3.2589263pm0.0000015$ days; its orbit is slightly eccentric ($e=0.084_{-0.023}^{+0.032}$). It has a radius of $R_P=1.000_{-0.067}^{+0.071}$ $R_J$ and a mass of $M_P=0.613_{-0.026}^{+0.027}$ $M_J$. Its host star exhibits significant rotational variability, and we measure a rotation period of $P_{mathrm{rot}}=10.777 pm 0.031$ days. K2-30 b (EPIC 210957318 b) transits a G6V star with a period of $4.098503pm0.000011$ days. It has a radius of $R_P=1.039_{-0.051}^{+0.050}$ $R_J$ and a mass of $M_P=0.579_{-0.027}^{+0.028}$ $M_J$. The star has a low metallicity for a hot Jupiter host, $[mathrm{Fe}/mathrm{H}]=-0.15 pm 0.05$.
We recently used near-infrared spectroscopy to improve the characterization of 76 low-mass stars around which K2 had detected 79 candidate transiting planets. Thirty of these worlds were new discoveries that have not previously been published. We cal culate the false positive probabilities that the transit-like signals are actually caused by non-planetary astrophysical phenomena and reject five new transit-like events and three previously reported events as false positives. We also statistically validate 18 planets (eight of which were previously unpublished), confirm the earlier validation of 21 planets, and announce 17 newly discovered planet candidates. Revising the properties of the associated planet candidates based on the updated host star characteristics and refitting the transit photometry, we find that our sample contains 20 planets or planet candidates with radii smaller than 1.25 Earth radii, 20 super-Earths (1.25-2 Earth radii), 20 small Neptunes (2-4 Earth radii), three large Neptunes (4-6 Earth radii), and eight giant planets (> 6 Earth radii). Most of these planets are highly irradiated, but EPIC 206209135.04 (K2-72e, Rp = 1.29 (-0.13/+0.14) Earth radii), EPIC 211988320.01 (Rp = 2.86 (-0.15/+0.16) Earth radii), and EPIC 212690867.01 (Rp = 2.20 (-0.18/+0.19) Earth radii) orbit within optimistic habitable zone boundaries set by the recent Venus inner limit and the early Mars outer limit. In total, our planet sample includes eight moderately-irradiated 1.5-3 Earth radius planet candidates (Fp < 20 F_Earth) orbiting brighter stars (Ks < 11) that are well-suited for atmospheric investigations with Hubble, Spitzer, and/or the James Webb Space Telescope. Five validated planets orbit relatively bright stars (Kp < 12.5) and are expected to yield radial velocity semi-amplitudes of at least 2 m/s.
Small, cool planets represent the typical end-products of planetary formation. Studying the archi- tectures of these systems, measuring planet masses and radii, and observing these planets atmospheres during transit directly informs theories of plane t assembly, migration, and evolution. Here we report the discovery of three small planets orbiting a bright (Ks = 8.6 mag) M0 dwarf using data collected as part of K2, the new transit survey using the re-purposed Kepler spacecraft. Stellar spectroscopy and K2 photometry indicate that the system hosts three transiting planets with radii 1.5-2.1 R_Earth, straddling the transition region between rocky and increasingly volatile-dominated compositions. With orbital periods of 10-45 days the planets receive just 1.5-10x the flux incident on Earth, making these some of the coolest small planets known orbiting a nearby star; planet d is located near the inner edge of the systems habitable zone. The bright, low-mass star makes this system an excellent laboratory to determine the planets masses via Doppler spectroscopy and to constrain their atmospheric compositions via transit spectroscopy. This discovery demonstrates the ability of K2 and future space-based transit searches to find many fascinating objects of interest.
Hot super-Earths likely possess minimal atmospheres established through vapor saturation equilibrium with the ground. We solve the hydrodynamics of these tenuous atmospheres at the surface of Corot-7b, Kepler 10b and 55 Cnc-e, including idealized tre atments of magnetic drag and ohmic dissipation. We find that atmospheric pressures remain close to their local saturation values in all cases. Despite the emergence of strongly supersonic winds which carry sublimating mass away from the substellar point, the atmospheres do not extend much beyond the day-night terminators. Ground temperatures, which determine the planetary thermal (infrared) signature, are largely unaffected by exchanges with the atmosphere and thus follow the effective irradiation pattern. Atmospheric temperatures, however, which control cloud condensation and thus albedo properties, can deviate substantially from the irradiation pattern. Magnetic drag and ohmic dissipation can also strongly impact the atmospheric behavior, depending on atmospheric composition and the planetary magnetic field strength. We conclude that hot super-Earths could exhibit interesting signatures in reflection (and possibly in emission) which would trace a combination of their ground, atmospheric and magnetic properties.
