Longitudinal space charge (LSC) effects are generally considered harmful in free-electron lasers as they can seed unfavorable energy modulations that can result in density modulations with associated emittance dilution. It was pointed out, however, that such micro-bunching instabilities could be potentially useful to support the generation of broadband coherent radiation. Therefore there has been an increasing interest in devising accelerator beam lines capable of controlling LSC induced density modulations. In the present paper we augment these previous investigations by combining a grid-less space charge algorithm with the popular particle-tracking program Elegant. This high-fidelity model of the space charge is used to benchmark conventional LSC models. We finally employ the developed model to optimize the performance of a cascaded longitudinal space charge amplifier using beam parameters comparable to the ones achievable at Fermilab Accelerator Science & Technology (FAST) facility currently under commissioning at Fermilab.

Comprehensive studies with the MARS15(2016) Monte-Carlo code are described on evaluation of prompt and residual radiation levels induced by nominal and accidental beam losses in the 5-MW, 2-GeV European Spallation Source (ESS) Linac. These are to pro vide a basis for radiation shielding design verification through the accelerator complex. The calculation model is based on the latest engineering design and includes a sophisticated algorithm for particle tracking in the machine RF cavities as well as a well-established model of the beam loss. Substantial efforts were put in solving the deep-penetration problem for the thick shielding around the tunnel with numerous complex penetrations. It allowed us to study in detail not only the prompt dose, but also component and air activation, radiation loads on the soil outside the tunnel, and skyshine studies for the complicated 3-D surface above the machine. Among the other things, the newest features in MARS15 (2016), such as a ROOT-based beamline builder and a TENDL-based event generator for nuclear interactions below 100 MeV, were very useful in this challenging application.

Longitudinal collective modes of a bunched beam with a repulsive inductive impedance (the space charge below transition or the chamber inductance above it) are analytically described by means of reduction of the linearized Vlasov equation to a parame ter-less integral equation. For any multipolarity, the discrete part of the spectrum is found to consist of infinite number of modes with real tunes, which limit point is the incoherent zero-amplitude frequency. In other words, notwithstanding the RF bucket nonlinearity and potential well distortion, the Landau damping is lost. Hence, even a tiny coupled-bunch interaction makes the beam unstable; such growth rates for all the modes are analytically obtained for arbitrary multipolarity. In practice, however, the finite threshold of this loss of Landau damping is set either by the high-frequency impedance roll-off or intrabeam scattering. Above the threshold, growth of the leading collective mode should result in persistent nonlinear oscillations.
The treatment of flue gases from power plants and municipal or industrial wastewater using electron beam irradiation technology has been successfully demonstrated in small-scale pilot plants. The beam energy requirement is rather modest, on the order of a few MeV, however the adoption of the technology at an industrial scale requires the availability of high beam power, of the order of 1 MW, in a cost effective way. In this article we present the design of a compact superconducting accelerator capable of delivering a cw electron beam with a current of 1 A and an energy of 1 MeV. The main components are an rf-gridded thermionic gun and a conduction cooled beta= 0.5 elliptical Nb3Sn cavity with dual coaxial power couplers. An engineering and cost analysis shows that the proposed design would result in a processing cost competitive with alternative treatment methods.
This paper describes the development progress of high current superconducting RF linacs in Los Alamos, performed to support a design of the linac for the APT (Accelerator Production of Tritium) Project. The APT linac design includes a CW superconduct ing RF high energy section, spanning an energy range of 211 to 1030 MeV, and operating at a frequency of 700 MHz with two constant beta sections (beta of 0.64 and 0.82). In the last two years, we have progressed towards build a cryomodule with beta of 0.64. We completed the designs of the 5 cell superconducting cavities and the 210 kW power couplers. We are scheduled to begin assembly of the cryomodule in September 2000. In this paper, we present an overview of the status of our development efforts and a report on the results of the cavity and coupler test program.
We propose a new type of axisymmetric dielectric target which effectively concentrates Cherenkov radiation (CR) generated in the bulk of the material into a small vicinity of focus point. It can be called the axicon-based concentrator for CR. A theor etical investigation of radiation field produced by a charge moving through the discussed radiator is performed for the general case where a charge trajectory is shifted with respect to the structure axis. The idea of dielectric target with specific profile of the outer surface was presented and developed in our preceeding papers. However, contrary to the previous configuration of such a target (which was investigated for both centered and shifted charge trajectory), the current version allows efficient concentration of CR energy from relativistic particles, making this device extremely prospective for various applications.
