The electrical properties of a set of seven-helix transmembrane proteins, whose space arrangement (3D structure) is known, are investigated by using regular arrays of the amino acids. These structures, specifically cubes, have topological features similar to those shown by the chosen proteins. The theoretical results show a good agreement between the predicted current-voltage characteristics obtained from a cubic array and those obtained from a detailed 3D structure. The agreement is confirmed by available experiments on bacteriorhodopsin. Furthermore, all the analyzed proteins are found to share the same critical behaviour of the voltage-dependent conductance and of its variance. In particular, the cubic arrangement evidences a short plateau of the excess conductance and its variance at high voltages. The results of the present investigation show the possibility to predict the I-V characteristics of multiple-protein sample even in the absence of a detailed knowledge of their 3D structure.

A two amino acid (hydrophobic and polar) scheme is used to perform the design on target conformations corresponding to the native states of twenty single chain proteins. Strikingly, the percentage of successful identification of the nature of the res idues benchmarked against naturally occurring proteins and their homologues is around 75 % independent of the complexity of the design procedure. Typically, the lowest success rate occurs for residues such as alanine that have a high secondary structure functionality. Using a simple lattice model, we argue that one possible shortcoming of the model studied may involve the coarse-graining of the twenty kinds of amino acids into just two effective types.
We have studied the transport properties of a molecular device composed of donor and acceptor moieties between two electrodes on either side. The device is considered to be one-dimensional with different on-site energies and the non-equilibrium prope rties are calculated using Landauers formalism. The current-voltage characteristics is found to be asymmetric with a sharp Negative Differential Resistance at a critical bias on one side and very small current on the other side. The NDR arises primarily due to the bias driven electronic structure change from one kind of insulating phase to another through a highly delocalized conducting phase. Our model can be considered to be the simplest to explain the experimental current-voltage characteristics observed in many molecular devices.
We report measurements of transfer functions and flux shifts of 20 on-chip high T$_C$ DC SQUIDs half of which were made purposely geometrically asymmetric. All of these SQUIDs were fabricated using standard high T$_C$ thin film technology and they we re single layer ones, having 140 nm thickness of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ film deposited by laser ablation onto MgO bicrystal substrates with 24$^0$ misorientation angle. For every SQUID the parameters of its intrinsic asymmetry, i. e., the density of critical current and resistivity of every junction, were measured directly and independently. We showed that the main reason for the on-chip spreading of SQUIDs voltage-current and voltage-flux characteristics was the intrinsic asymmetry. We found that for SQUIDs with a relative large inductance ($L>120 $ pH) both the voltage modulation and the transfer function were not very sensitive to the junctions asymmetry, whereas SQUIDs with smaller inductance ($Lsimeq 65-75 $ pH) were more sensitive. The results obtained in the paper are important for the implementation in the sensitive instruments based on high T$_C$ SQUID arrays and gratings.
We investigate conductance and conductance fluctuations of two transmembrane proteins, bacteriorhodopsin and proteorhodopsin, belonging to the family of protein light receptors. These proteins are widely diffused in aqueous environments, are sensitiv e to visible light and are promising biomaterials for the realization of novel photodevices. The conductance exhibits a rapid increase at increasing applied voltages, over a threshold value. Around the threshold value the variance of conductance fluctuations shows a dramatic jump of about 5 orders of magnitude: conductance and variance behaviours trace a second order phase transition. Furthermore, the conductance fluctuations evidence a non-Gaussian behaviour with a probability density function (PDF) which follows a generalized Gumbel distribution, typical of extreme-value statistics. The theoretical model is validated on existing current-voltage measurements and the interpretation of the PDF of conductance fluctuations is proven to be in line with the microscopic mechanisms responsible of charge transport.
We present a quantitative study of the current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of diffusive superconductor/ insulator/ ferromagnet/ superconductor (SIFS) tunnel Josephson junctions. In order to obtain the CVC we calculate the density of states (DOS) in the F/S bilayer for arbitrary length of the ferromagnetic layer, using quasiclassical theory. For a ferromagnetic layer thickness larger than the characteristic penetration depth of the superconducting condensate into the F layer, we find an analytical expression which agrees with the DOS obtained from a self-consistent numerical method. We discuss general properties of the DOS and its dependence on the parameters of the ferromagnetic layer. In particular we focus our analysis on the DOS oscillations at the Fermi energy. Using the numerically obtained DOS we calculate the corresponding CVC and discuss their properties. Finally, we use CVC to calculate the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) escape rate for the current biased SIFS junctions by taking into account the dissipative correction due to the quasiparticle tunneling. We show that the influence of the quasiparticle dissipation on the macroscopic quantum dynamics of SIFS junctions is small, which is an advantage of SIFS junctions for superconducting qubits applications.
