We consider a class of parametrically forced Hamiltonian systems with one-and-a-half degrees of freedom and study the stability of the dynamics when the frequency of the forcing is relatively high or low. We show that, provided the frequency of the forcing is sufficiently high, KAM theorem may be applied even when the forcing amplitude is far away from the perturbation regime. A similar result is obtained for sufficiently low frequency forcing, but in that case we need the amplitude of the forcing to be not too large; however we are still able to consider amplitudes of the forcing which are outside of the perturbation regime. Our results are illustrated by means of numerical simulations for the system of a forced cubic oscillator. In addition, we find numerically that the dynamics are stable even when the forcing amplitude is very large (beyond the range of validity of the analytical results), provided the frequency of the forcing is taken correspondingly low.

The ability of a circadian system to entrain to the 24-hour light-dark cycle is one of its most important properties. A new tool, called the entrainment map, was recently introduced to study this process for a single oscillator. Here we generalize th e map to study the effects of light-dark forcing in a hierarchical system consisting of a central circadian oscillator that drives a peripheral circadian oscillator. We develop techniques to reduced the higher dimensional phase space of the coupled system to derive a generalized 2-D entrainment map. Determining the nature of various fixed points, together with an understanding of their stable and unstable manifolds, leads to conditions for existence and stability of periodic orbits of the circadian system. We use the map to investigate how various properties of solutions depend on parameters and initial conditions including the time to and direction of entrainment. We show that the concepts of phase advance and phase delay need to be carefully assessed when considering hierarchical systems.
Define the following order among all natural numbers except for 2 and 1: [ 4gg 6gg 3gg dots gg 4ngg 4n+2gg 2n+1gg 4n+4ggdots ] Let $f$ be a continuous interval map. We show that if $mgg s$ and $f$ has a cycle with no division (no block structure) of period $m$ then $f$ has also a cycle with no division (no block structure) of period $s$. We describe possible sets of periods of cycles of $f$ with no division and no block structure.
The impact of the El Ni~no-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the extratropics is investigated in an idealized, reduced-order model that has a tropical and an extratropical module. Unidirectional ENSO forcing is used to mimick the atmospheric bridge betw een the tropics and the extratropics. The variability of the coupled ocean-atmosphere extratropical module is then investigated through the analysis of its pullback attractors (PBAs). This analysis focuses on two types of ENSO forcing generated by the tropical module, one periodic and the other aperiodic. For a substantial range of the ENSO forcing, two chaotic PBAs are found to coexist for the same set of parameter values. Different types of extratropical low-frequency variability are associated with either PBA over the parameter ranges explored. For periodic ENSO forcing, the coexisting PBAs exhibit only weak nonlinear instability. For chaotic forcing, though, they are quite unstable and certain extratropical perturbations induce transitions between the two PBAs. These distinct stability properties may have profound consequences for extratropical climate predictions: in particular, ensemble averaging may no longer help isolate the low-frequency variability signal.

In this paper, we study the Poisson stability (in particular, stationarity, periodicity, quasi-periodicity, Bohr almost periodicity, almost automorphy, recurrence in the sense of Birkhoff, Levitan almost periodicity, pseudo periodicity, almost recurr ence in the sense of Bebutov, pseudo recurrence, Poisson stability) of motions for monotone nonautonomous dynamical systems and of solutions for some classes of monotone nonautonomous evolution equations (ODEs, FDEs and parabolic PDEs). As a byproduct, some of our results indicate that all the trajectories of monotone systems converge to the above mentioned Poisson stable trajectories under some suitable conditions, which is interesting in its own right for monotone dynamics.
We numerically study the evolution of the vibrational density of states $D(omega)$ of zero-temperature glasses when their kinetic stability is varied over an extremely broad range, ranging from poorly annealed glasses obtained by instantaneous quench es from above the onset temperature, to ultrastable glasses obtained by quenching systems thermalised below the experimental glass temperature. The low-frequency part of the density of states splits between extended and quasi-localized modes. Extended modes exhibit a boson peak crossing over to Debye behaviour ($D(omega) sim omega^2$) at low-frequency, with a strong correlation between the two regimes. Quasi-localized modes instead obey $D(omega) sim omega^4$, irrespective of the glass stability. However, the prefactor of this quartic law becomes smaller in more stable glasses, and the corresponding modes become more localized and sparser. Our work is the first numerical observation of quasi-localized modes in a regime relevant to experiments, and it establishes a direct connection between glass stability and soft vibrational motion in amorphous solids.
