The system for insertion of a laser beam into the vacuum chamber of high-energy storage ring is described. The main part of the system is the high-vacuum viewport for the IR radiation, based on ZnSe or GaAs crystals. The design of the viewports is presented.

We propose an on-chip optical power delivery system for dielectric laser accelerators based on a fractal tree-branch dielectric waveguide network. This system replaces experimentally demanding free-space manipulations of the driving laser beam with c hip-integrated techniques based on precise nano-fabrication, enabling access to orders of magnitude increases in the interaction length and total energy gain for these miniature accelerators. Based on computational modeling, in the relativistic regime, our laser delivery system is estimated to provide 21 keV of energy gain over an acceleration length of 192 um with a single laser input, corresponding to a 108 MV/m acceleration gradient. The system may achieve 1 MeV of energy gain over a distance less than 1 cm by sequentially illuminating 49 identical structures. These findings are verified by detailed numerical simulation and modeling of the subcomponents and we provide a discussion of the main constraints, challenges, and relevant parameters in regards to on-chip laser coupling for dielectric laser accelerators.

A compact X-ray Free Electron Laser (SwissFEL) is under development at the Paul Scherrer Institute. To increase facility efficiency the main linac will operate in two electron bunch mode. The two bunches are separated in time by 28 ns and sent to two undulator lines. The combination of two beam lines should produce short X-ray pulses covering wavelength range from 1 to 70 {AA} with submicron position stability. To separate the two bunches, a novel electron beam switching system is being developed. The total deflection is achieved with a combination of high Q-factor resonant deflector magnet, followed by a DC septum magnet. The shot-to-shot deflection stability of the entire switching system should be <+/-10 ppm in amplitude and +/-100 ps in time, values which present severe measurement difficulties. Deflection magnets requirements, development and results of the kicker prototype are presented.
Photoinjectors are widely used for linear accelerators as electron sources to generate high-brightness electron beam. Drive laser, which determines the timing structure and quality of the electron beam, is a crucial device of photoinjector. A new dri ve laser system has been designed and constructed for the upgraded 3.5-cell DC-SRF photoinjector at Peking University. The drive laser system consists of a 1064 nm laser oscillator, a four- stage amplifier, the second and fourth harmonic generators, the optical system to transfer the UV pulses to the photocathode, and the synchronization system. The drive laser system has been successfully applied in the stable operation of DC-SRF photoinjector and its performance meets the requirements. 266 nm laser with an average power close to 1W can be delivered to illuminate the Cs2Te photocathode and the instability is less than 5% for long time operation. The design consideration for improving the UV laser quality, a detailed description of laser system, and its performance are presented in this paper.

Single cycle laser pulse propagating inside a plasma causes controllable asymmetric plasma electron expulsion from laser according to laser carrier envelope phase (CEP) and forms an oscillating plasma bubble. Bubbles transverse wakefield is modified, exhibiting periodic modulation. Injection scheme for a laser wakefield accelerator combining a single cycle low frequency laser pulse and a many cycle high frequency laser pulse is proposed. The co-propagating laser pulses form a transversely oscillating wakefield which efficiently traps and accelerates electrons from background plasma. By tuning the initial CEP of the single cycle laser pulse, injection dynamics can be modified independently of the many cycle pulse, enabling control of electron bunches spatial profile.

Since the first vacuum tube (X-ray tube) was invented by Wilhelm Rontgen in Germany, after more than one hundred years of development, the average power density of the vacuum tube microwave source has reached the order of 108 [MW][GHz]2. In the high- power microwave field, the vacuum devices are still the mainstream microwave sources for applications such as scientific instruments, communications, radars, magnetic confinement fusion heating, microwave weapons, etc. The principles of microwave generation by vacuum tube microwave sources include Cherenkov or Smith-Purcell radiation, transition radiation, and Bremsstrahlung. In this paper, the vacuum tube microwave sources based on Cherenkov radiation were reviewed. Among them, the multi-wave Cherenkov generators can produce 15 GW output power in X-band. Cherenkov radiation vacuum tubes that can achieve continuous-wave operation include Traveling Wave Tubes and Magnetrons, with output power up to 1MW. Cherenkov radiation vacuum tubes that can generate frequencies of the order of 100 GHz and above include Traveling Wave Tubes, Backward Wave Oscillators, Magnetrons, Surface Wave Oscillators, Orotrons, etc.
