The technology of wet etching allowing fabrication of standalone BiSrCaCuO mesa structures was proposed. The produced mesas can be produced much thicker than ones usually being studied. The time required for the fabrication is much smaller in comparison with the standard method of ion milling. The process used is controllable which provides acceptable precision of mesa fabrication. The current-voltage characteristics of the sample showing Josephson nature were obtained. The qualitative comparison with characteristics of similar structures fabricated by other groups was carried out.

The proximity effect in superfluid $^3$He partly filled with high porosity aerogel is discussed. This system can be regarded as a dirty Fermi liquid/spin-triplet p-wave superfluid junction. Our attention is mainly paid to the case when the dirty laye r is in the normal state owing to the impurity pair-breaking effect by the aerogel. We use the quasiclassical Greens function to determine self-consistently the spatial variations of the p-wave order parameter and the impurity self-energy. On the basis of the fully self-consistent calculation, we analyze the spatial dependence of the pair function (anomalous Greens function). The spin-triplet pair function has in general even-frequency odd-parity and odd-frequency even-parity components. We show that the admixture of the even- and odd-frequency pairs occurs near the aerogel/superfluid $^3$He-B interface. Among those Cooper pairs, only the odd-frequency s-wave pair can penetrate deep into the aerogel layer. As a result, the proximity-induced superfluidity in a thick aerogel layer is dominated by the Cooper pair with the odd-frequency s-wave symmetry. We also analyze the local density of states and show that it has a characteristic zero-energy peak reflecting the existence of the odd-frequency s-wave pair, in agreement with previous works using the Usadel equation.
The contributions of superconducting fluctuations to the specific heat of dirty superconductors are calculated, including quantum and classical corrections to the `usual leading Gaussian divergence. These additional terms modify the Ginzburg criterio n, which is based on equating these fluctuation-generated contributions to the mean-field discontinuity in the specific heat, and set limits on its applicability for materials with a low transition temperature.

We previously introduced [T. Cren et al., Europhys. Lett. 52, 203 (2000)] an energy-dependant gap function, $Delta(E)$, that fits the unusual shape of the quasiparticle (QP) spectrum for both BiSrCaCuO and YBaCuO. A simple anti-resonance in $Delta(E) $ accounts for the pronounced QP peaks in the density of states, at an energy $Delta_p$, and the dip feature at a higher energy, $E_{dip}$. Here we go a step further : our gap function is consistent with the ($T, p$) phase diagram, where $p$ is the carrier density. For large QP energies ($E >> Delta_p$), the total spectral gap is $Delta(E) simeq Delta_p + Delta_phi$, where $Delta_phi$ is tied to the condensation energy. From the available data, a simple $p$-dependance of $Delta_p$ and $Delta_phi$ is found, in particular $Delta_phi(p) simeq 2.3 k_B T_c(p)$. These two distinct energy scales of the superconducting state are interpreted by comparing with the normal and pseudogap states. The various forms of the QP density of states, as well as the spectral function $A(k,E)$, are discussed.
We report on the optimization of synthesis of iron-selenide (non-arsenic) superconducting powders that are based on 122 composition, with optimal Tc = 38 K and Jc = 10^5 A/cm2 (4 K). We also report on the wire proof-of concept for these materials, by producing ~ 40 ft of wire that produce Ic. The 122 selenides are more difficult to synthesize and have more complex crystal structures compared to 11 selenides (FeSe and FeSe1-xTex), but they do offer higher Tc and might provoke a natural extension for 11 work.

Using kinetic equation approach we study dynamics of electrons and phonons in current-carrying superconducting nanostrips after absorption of single photon of near-infrared or optical range. We find that the larger the ratio $C_e/C_{ph}|_{T_c}$ ($T_c $ is a critical temperature of superconductor, $C_e$ and $C_{ph}$ are specific heat capacities of electrons and phonons, respectively) the larger part of photons energy goes to electrons, they become stronger heated and, hence, could thermalize faster during initial stage of hot spot formation. Thermalization time $tau_{th}$ could be less than one picoseconds for superconductors with $C_e/C_{ph}|_{T_c}gg 1$ and small diffusion coefficient $Dsimeq 0.5 cm^2/s$ when thermalization occurs mainly due to electron-phonon and phonon-electron scattering in relatively small volume $sim xi^2d$ ($xi$ is a superconducting coherence length, $d<xi$ is a thickness of the strip). At larger times due to diffusion of hot electrons effective temperature inside the hot spot decreases, the size of hot spot increases, superconducting state becomes unstable and normal domain spreads in the strip at current larger than so-called detection current. We find dependence of detection current on the photons energy, place of its absorption in the strip, width of the strip, magnetic field and compare it with existing experiments. Our results demonstrate that materials with $C_e/C_{ph}|_{T_c} ll 1$ are bad candidates for single photon detectors due to small transfer of photons energy to electronic system and large $tau_{th}$. We also predict that even several microns wide dirty superconducting bridge is able to detect single near-infrared or optical photon if its critical current exceeds 70 $%$ of depairing current and $C_e/C_{ph}|_{T_c} gtrsim 1$.
