We report on the optimization of synthesis of iron-selenide (non-arsenic) superconducting powders that are based on 122 composition, with optimal Tc = 38 K and Jc = 10^5 A/cm2 (4 K). We also report on the wire proof-of concept for these materials, by producing ~ 40 ft of wire that produce Ic. The 122 selenides are more difficult to synthesize and have more complex crystal structures compared to 11 selenides (FeSe and FeSe1-xTex), but they do offer higher Tc and might provoke a natural extension for 11 work.

Two-dimensional (2D) superconductors supply important platforms for exploring new quantum physics and high-$T_c$ superconductivity. The intrinsic superconducting properties in the 2D iron-arsenic superconductors are still unknown owing to the difficu lties in the preparation of ultrathin samples. Here we report the fabrication and physical investigations of the high quality single-crystalline ultrathin films of the iron-arsenic superconductor KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$. For the sample with the thickness of 2.6$sim$5 nm (1$sim$2 unit cells), a sharp superconducting transition at around 30 K (onset point) is observed. Compare with the bulk material, the ultrathin sample reveals a relatively lower $T_c$, wider transition width, and broader flux liquid region under the in-plane field. Moreover, the angle dependent upper critical field follows the Tinkham model, demonstrating the two-dimensional superconductivity in ultrathin KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$.

The transport and complex optical properties of the electron-doped iron-arsenic superconductor BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 with Tc = 25 K have been examined in the Fe-As planes above and below Tc. A Bloch-Gruneisen analysis of the resistivity yields a weak ele ctron-phonon coupling constant lambda_ph ~ 0.2. The low-frequency optical response in the normal state appears to be dominated by the electron pocket and may be described by a weakly-interacting Fermi liquid with a Drude plasma frequency of omega_p,D ~ 7840 cm-1 (~ 0.972 eV) and scattering rate 1/tau_D ~ 125 cm-1 (~ 15 meV) just above Tc. The frequency-dependent scattering rate 1/tau(omega) has kinks at ~ 12 and 55 meV that appear to be related to bosonic excitations. Below Tc the majority of the superconducting plasma frequency originates from the electron pocket and is estimated to be omega_p,S ~ 5200 cm-1 (lambda0 ~ 3000 Angstroms) for T << Tc, indicating that less than half the free carriers in the normal state have collapsed into the condensate, suggesting that this material is not in the clean limit. Supporting this finding is the observation that this material falls close to the universal scaling line for a BCS dirty-limit superconductor in the weak-coupling limit. There are two energy scales for the superconductivity in the optical conductivity and photo-induced reflectivity at Delta1 ~ 3.1 +/- 0.2 meV and Delta2 ~ 7.4 +/- 0.3 meV. This corresponds to either the gaping of the electron and hole pockets, respectively, or an anisotropic s-wave gap on the electron pocket; both views are consistent with the s+/- model.
The new rare-earth arsenate superconductors are layered, low carrier density compounds with many similarities to the high-Tc cuprates. An important question is whether they also exhibit weak-coupling across randomly oriented grain-boundaries. In this work we show considerable evidence for such weak-coupling by study of the dependence of magnetization in bulk and powdered samples. Bulk sample magnetization curves show very little hysteresis while remanent magnetization shows almost no sample size dependence, even after powdering. We conclude that these samples exhibit substantial electromagnetic granularity on a scale approximating the grain size, though we cannot yet determine whether this is intrinsic or extrinsic.

A subtle balance between competing interactions in strongly correlated systems can be easily tipped by additional interfacial interactions in a heterostructure. This often induces exotic phases with unprecedented properties, as recently exemplified b y high-Tc superconductivity in FeSe monolayer on the nonmagnetic SrTiO3. When the proximity-coupled layer is magnetically active, even richer phase diagrams are expected in iron-based superconductors (FeSCs), which however has not been explored due to the lack of a proper material system. One promising candidate is Sr2VO3FeAs, a naturally-assembled heterostructure of a FeSC and a Mott-insulating vanadium oxide. Here, using high-quality single crystals and high-accuracy 75As and 51V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, we show that a novel electronic phase is emerging in the FeAs layer below T0 ~ 155 K without either static magnetism or a crystal symmetry change, which has never been observed in other FeSCs. We find that frustration of the otherwise dominant Fe stripe and V Neel fluctuations via interfacial coupling induces a charge/orbital order with C4-symmetry in the FeAs layers, while suppressing the Neel antiferromagnetism in the SrVO3 layers. These findings demonstrate that the magnetic proximity coupling is effective to stabilize a hidden order in FeSCs and, more generally, in strongly correlated heterostructures.
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the low-energy spin excitations of 112-type iron pnictide Ca$_{0.82}$La$_{0.18}$Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$As$_{2}$ with bulk superconductivity below $T_c=22$ K. A two-dimensional spin resonance mode is found a round $E=$ 11 meV, where the resonance energy is almost temperature independent and linearly scales with $T_c$ along with other iron-based superconductors. Polarized neutron analysis reveals the resonance is nearly isotropic in spin space without any $L$ modulations. Due to the unique monoclinic structure with additional zigzag arsenic chains, the As $4p$ orbitals contribute to a three-dimensional hole pocket around $Gamma$ point and an extra electron pocket at $X$ point. Our results suggest that the energy and momentum distribution of spin resonance does not directly response to the $k_z$ dependence of fermiology, and the spin resonance intrinsically is a spin-1 mode from singlet-triplet excitations of the Cooper pairs in the case of weak spin-orbital coupling.
