We study the origin of the cubic to tetragonal and tetragonal to monoclinic structural transitions in KCrF3, and the associated change in orbital order, paying particular attention to the relevance of super-exchange in both phases. We show that super -exchange is not the main mechanism driving these transitions. Specifically, it is not strong enough to be responsible for the high-temperature cubic to tetragonal transition and does not yield the type of orbital order observed in the monoclinic phase. The energy difference between the tetragonal and the monoclinic structure is tiny, and most likely results from the interplay between volume, covalency, and localization effects. The transition is rather driven by Slater exchange than super-exchange. Nevertheless, once the monoclinic distortions are present, super-exchange helps in stabilizing the low symmetry structure. The orbital order we obtain for this monoclinic phase is consistent with the magnetic transition at 80 K.

We report the study of magnetic and orbital order in Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ epitaxial thin films grown on (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.3}$-(SrAl$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.5}$O$_3$)$_{0.7}$ (LSAT) (011)$_c$. In a new experimental approach, the polarization and energy dep endence of resonant soft x-ray scattering are used to reveal significant modifications of the magnetic order in the film as compared to the bulk, namely (i) a different magnetic ordering wave vector, (ii) a different magnetic easy axis and (iii) an additional magnetic reordering transition at low temperatures. These observations indicate a strong impact of the epitaxial strain on the spin order, which is mediated by the orbital degrees of freedom and which provides a promising route to tune the magnetic properties of manganite films. Our results further demonstrate that resonant soft x-ray scattering is a very suitable technique to study the magnetism in thin films, to which neutron scattering cannot easily be applied due to the small sample volume.
Magnetic properties of polycrystalline CaMn1-xRuxO3 (x = 0 - 0.5) samples were investigated in the temperature range 4.2 - 250 K, under external magnetic field up to 15 kOe and under hydrostatic pressure up to 12 kbar. Transport properties of the sam ples with x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5 were also investigated under pressure up to 10 kbar. For x up to 0.4, the pressure was found to suppress ferromagnetic correlations and to increase the resistivity, while for x = 0.5 to act in the opposite way. While long ferromagnetic order is completely suppressed, in small clusters ferromagnetic correlations probably survive under pressure, as was revealed for CaMn0.9Ru0.1O3. The pressure effect on the magnetic interactions and on the volume of ferromagnetic phase was found to depend strongly on the Ru-content, and absolute value of the pressure coefficient of spontaneous magnetization was found to decrease practically linearly with increasing x in the range 0.1 < x < 0.5. The experimental data are discussed in the frame of proposed energy-level diagram, which includes magneto-impurity states at low and moderate Ru-doping and mixed-valence states of Ru presented by a strongly-correlated t2g-like band at heavy Ru-doping. An impact of disorder introduced by Ru-doping on the energy diagram and on derived magnetic interactions is discussed. Predictions of the model regarding the pressure effects on conductivity and temperature scales characteristic for magnetic interactions are in reasonable agreement with experiment.
We studied the charge-orbital ordering in the superlattice of charge-ordered insulating Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ and ferromagnetic metallic La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ by resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A temperature-dependent incommensurability is found in the orbital order. In addition, a large hysteresis is observed that is caused by phase competition between insulating charge ordered and metallic ferromagnetic states. No magnetic phase transitions are observed in contrast to bulk, confirming the unique character of the superlattice. The deviation from the commensurate orbital order can be directly related to the decrease of ordered-layer thickness that leads to a decoupling of the orbital-ordered planes along the c axis.
Magnetic skyrmion textures are realized mainly in non-centrosymmetric, e.g. chiral or polar, magnets. Extending the field to centrosymmetric bulk materials is a rewarding challenge, where the released helicity / vorticity degree of freedom and higher skyrmion density result in intriguing new properties and enhanced functionality. We report here on the experimental observation of a skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase with large topological Hall effect and an incommensurate helical pitch as small as 2.8 nm in metallic Gd3Ru4Al12, which materializes a breathing kagome lattice of Gadolinium moments. The magnetic structure of several ordered phases, including the SkL, is determined by resonant x-ray diffraction as well as small angle neutron scattering. The SkL and helical phases are also observed directly using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. Among several competing phases, the SkL is promoted over a low-temperature transverse conical state by thermal fluctuations in an intermediate range of magnetic fields.
