A 4D-Var data assimilation technique is applied to the rectangular-box configuration of the NEMO in order to identify the optimal parametrization of boundary conditions at lateral boundaries. The case of the staircase-shaped coastlines is studied by rotating the model grid around the center of the box. It is shown that, in some cases, the formulation of the boundary conditions at the exact boundary leads to appearance of exponentially growing modes while optimal boundary conditions allow to correct the errors induced by the staircase-like appriximation of the coastline.

A 4D-Var data assimilation technique is applied to a ORCA-2 configuration of the NEMO in order to identify the optimal parametrization of the boundary conditions on the lateral boundaries as well as on the bottom and on the surface of the ocean. The influence of the boundary conditions on the solution is analyzed as in the assimilation window and beyond the window. It is shown that optimal conditions for vertical operators allows to get stronger and finer jet streams (Gulf Stream, Kuroshio) in the solution. Analyzing the reasons of the jets reinforcement, we see that the major impact of the data assimilation is made on the parametrization of the bottom boundary conditions for lateral velocities u and v. Automatic generation of the tangent and adjoint codes is also discussed. Tapenade software is shown to be able to produce the adjoint code that can be used after a memory usage optimization.
The predictability of the atmosphere at short and long time scales, associated with the coupling to the ocean, is explored in a new version of the Modular Arbitrary-Order Ocean-Atmosphere Model (MAOOAM), based on a 2-layer quasi-geostrophic atmospher e and a 1-layer reduced-gravity quasi-geostrophic ocean. This version features a new ocean basin geometry with periodic boundary conditions in the zonal direction. The analysis presented in this paper considers a low-order version of the model with 40 dynamical variables. First the increase of surface friction (and the associated heat flux) with the ocean can either induce chaos when the aspect ratio between the meridional and zonal directions of the domain of integration is small, or suppress chaos when it is large. This reflects the potentially counter-intuitive role that the ocean can play in the coupled dynamics. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the emergence of long-term predictability within the atmosphere for specific values of the friction coefficient occurs through intermittent excursions in the vicinity of a (long-period) unstable periodic solution. Once close to this solution the system is predictable for long times, i.e. a few years. The intermittent transition close to this orbit is, however, erratic and probably hard to predict. This new route to long-term predictability contrasts with the one found in the closed ocean-basin low-order version of MAOOAM, in which the chaotic solution is permanently wandering in the vicinity of an unstable periodic orbit for specific values of the friction coefficient. The model solution is thus at any time influenced by the unstable periodic orbit and inherits from its long-term predictability.
In this paper we investigate the optimal control problem for a class of stochastic Cauchy evolution problem with non standard boundary dynamic and control. The model is composed by an infinite dimensional dynamical system coupled with a finite dimens ional dynamics, which describes the boundary conditions of the internal system. In other terms, we are concerned with non standard boundary conditions, as the value at the boundary is governed by a different stochastic differential equation.
Inspired by the theoretical results on optimal preconditioning stated by Ng, R.Chan, and Tang in the framework of Reflective boundary conditions (BCs), in this paper we present analogous results for Anti-Reflective BCs, where an additional technical difficulty is represented by the non orthogonal character of the Anti-Reflective transform and indeed the technique of Ng, R.Chan, and Tang can not be used. Nevertheless, in both cases, the optimal preconditioner is the blurring matrix associated to the symmetrized Point Spread Function (PSF). The geometrical idea on which our proof is based is very simple and general, so it may be useful in the future to prove theoretical results for new proposed boundary conditions. Computational results show that the preconditioning strategy is effective and it is able to give rise to a meaningful acceleration both for slightly and highly non-symmetric PSFs.
We explore boundary scattering in the sine-Gordon model with a non-integrable family of Robin boundary conditions. The soliton content of the field after collision is analysed using a numerical implementation of the direct scattering problem associat ed with the inverse scattering method. We find that an antikink may be reflected into various combinations of an antikink, a kink, and one or more breathers, depending on the values of the initial antikink velocity and a parameter associated with the boundary condition. In addition we observe regions with an intricate resonance structure arising from the creation of an intermediate breather whose recollision with the boundary is highly dependent on the breather phase.
