Fine-Tuning of Magnetic Interactions in Organic Spin Ladders

We have succeeded in synthesizing two types of new organic radical crystals 3-I-V [= 3- (3-iodophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl] and 3-Br-4-F-V [= 3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5- diphenylverdazyl]. Their crystal strucutures are found to be isomorphous to that of previously reported spin ladder 3-Cl-4-F-V. Through the quantitative analysis of their molecular arrangements and magnetic properties, we confirm that these materials form ferromagnetic chain-based spin ladders with slightly modulated magnetic interactions. These results present the first quantitative demonstration of the fine-tuning of magnetic interactions in the molecular- based materials.

The magnetic responses of a spin-1/2 ladder doped with non-magnetic impurities are studied using various methods and including the regime where frustration induces incommensurability. Several improvements are made on the results of the seminal work o f Sigrist and Furusaki [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 65, 2385 (1996)]. Deviations from the Brillouin magnetic curve due to interactions are also analyzed. First, the magnetic profile around a single impurity and effective interactions between impurities are analyzed within the bond-operator mean-field theory and compared to density-matrix renormalization group calculations. Then, the temperature behavior of the Curie constant is studied in details. At zero-temperature, we give doping-dependent corrections to the results of Sigrist and Furusaki on general bipartite lattice and compute exactly the distribution of ladder cluster due to chain breaking effects. Using exact diagonalization and quantum Monte-Carlo methods on the effective model, the temperature dependence of the Curie constant is compared to a random dimer model and a real-space renormalization group scenario. Next, the low-part of the magnetic curve corresponding to the contribution of impurities is computed using exact diagonalization. The random dimer model is shown to capture the bulk of the curve, accounting for the deviation from the Brillouin response. At zero-temperature, the effective model prediction agrees relatively well with density-matrix renormalization group calculations. Finite-temperature effects are displayed within the effective model and for large depleted ladder models using quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. In all, the effect of incommensurability does not display a strong qualitative effect on both the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic curve. Consequences for experiments on the BiCu2PO6 compound and other spin-gapped materials are briefly discussed.
We study a generalized quantum spin ladder with staggered long range interactions that decay as a power-law with exponent $alpha$. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and exact diagonalization, we show that this model undergo es a transition from a rung-dimer phase characterized by a non-local string order parameter, to a symmetry broken Neel phase at $alpha_csim 2.1$. We find evidence that the transition is second order with a dynamic critical exponent $z=1$ and $ uapprox 1.2$. In the magnetically ordered phase, the spectrum exhibits gapless modes, while excitations in the gapped phase are well described in terms of triplons -- bound states of spinons across the legs. We obtained the momentum resolved spin dynamic structure factor numerically and found that the triplon band is well defined at high energies and adiabatically connected to the magnon dispersion. However, at low energies it emerges as the lower edge of continuum of excitations that shifts to high energies across the transition. We further discuss the possibility of deconfined criticality in this model.
We present a 14N nuclear magnetic resonance study of a single crystal of CuBr4(C5H12N)2 (BPCB) consisting of weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders. Treating ladders in the gapless phase as Luttinger liquids, we are able to full y account for (i) the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at 250 mK and for (ii) the phase transition to a 3D ordered phase occuring below 110 mK due to weak interladder exchange coupling. BPCB is thus an excellent model system where the possibility to control Luttinger liquid parameters in a continuous manner is demonstrated and Luttinger liquid model tested in detail over the whole fermion band.
Spin excitations of magnetic thin films are the founding element for novel transport concepts in spintronics, magnonics, and magnetic devices in general. While spin dynamics have been extensively studied in bulk materials, their behaviour in mesoscop ic films is less known due to experimental limitations. Here, we employ Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering to investigate the spin excitation spectrum in mesoscopic Fe films, from bulk-like down to 3 unit cells thick. In bulk-like samples, we find isotropic, dispersive ferromagnons consistent with the dispersion observed by neutron scattering in bulk single crystals. As the thickness is reduced, these ferromagnons survive and evolve anisotropically: renormalising to lower energies along the out-of-plane direction while retaining their dispersion in the in-plane direction. This thickness dependence is captured by simple Heisenberg model calculations accounting for the confinement in the out-of-plane direction through the loss of Fe bonds. Our findings highlight the effects of mesoscopic scaling on spin dynamics and identify thickness as a knob for fine-tuning and controlling magnetic properties in films.

We derive a Hamiltonian for a two-leg ladder which includes an arbitrary number of charge and spin interactions. To illustrate this Hamiltonian we consider two examples and use a renormalization group technique to evaluate the ground state phases. Th e first example is a two-leg ladder with zigzagged legs. We find that increasing the number of interactions in such a two-leg ladder may result in a richer phase diagram, particularly at half-filling where a few exotic phases are possible when the number of interactions are large and the angle of the zigzag is small. In the second example we determine under which conditions a two-leg ladder at quarter-filling is able to support a Tomanaga-Luttinger liquid phase. We show that this is only possible when the spin interactions across the rungs are ferromagnetic. In both examples we focus on lithium purple bronze, a two-leg ladder with zigzagged legs which is though to support a Tomanaga-Luttinger liquid phase.
