Separation of neutral and charge modes in one dimensional chiral edge channels

Coulomb interactions have a major role in one-dimensional electronic transport. They modify the nature of the elementary excitations from Landau quasiparticles in higher dimensions to collective excitations in one dimension. Here we report the direct observation of the collective neutral and charge modes of the two chiral co-propagating edge channels of opposite spins of the quantum Hall effect at filling factor 2. Generating a charge density wave at frequency f in the outer channel, we measure the current induced by inter-channel Coulomb interaction in the inner channel after a 3-mm propagation length. Varying the driving frequency from 0.7 to 11 GHz, we observe damped oscillations in the induced current that result from the phase shift between the fast charge and slow neutral eigenmodes. We measure the dispersion relation and dissipation of the neutral mode from which we deduce quantitative information on the interaction range and parameters.

We study the problem of injecting single electrons into interacting one-dimensional quantum systems, a fundamental building block for electron quantum optics. It is well known that such injection leads to charge and energy fractionalization. We eluci date this concept by calculating the nonequilibrium electron distribution function in the momentum and energy domains after the injection of an energy-resolved electron. Our results shed light on how fractionalization occurs via the creation of particle-hole pairs by the injected electron. In particular, we focus on systems with a pair of counterpropagating channels, and we fully analyze the properties of each chiral fractional excitation which is created by the injection. We suggest possible routes to access their energy and momentum distribution functions in topological quantum Hall or quantum spin-Hall edge states.
A general form of the Hamiltonian for electrons confined to a curved one-dimensional (1D) channel with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) linear in momentum is rederived and is applied to a U-shaped channel. Discretizing the derived continuous 1D Hamiltonian to a tight-binding version, the Landauer-Keldysh formalism (LKF) for nonequilibrium transport can be applied. Spin transport through the U-channel based on the LKF is compared with previous quantum mechanical approaches. The role of a curvature-induced geometric potential which was previously neglected in the literature of the ring issue is also revisited. Transport regimes between nonadiabatic, corresponding to weak SOC or sharp turn, and adiabatic, corresponding to strong SOC or smooth turn, is discussed. Based on the LKF, interesting charge and spin transport properties are further revealed. For the charge transport, the interplay between the Rashba and the linear Dresselhaus (001) SOCs leads to an additional modulation to the local charge density in the half-ring part of the U-channel, which is shown to originate from the angle-dependent spin-orbit potential. For the spin transport, theoretically predicted eigenstates of the Rashba rings, Dresselhaus rings, and the persistent spin-helix state are numerically tested by the present quantum transport calculation.
The recent research of disorder effects on topological phases in quasicrystalline systems has received much attention. In this work, by numerically computing the (spin) Bott index and the thermal conductance, we reveal the effects of disorder on a cl ass D chiral and a class DIII time-reversal invariant topological superconductors in a two-dimensional Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattice. We demonstrate that both the topologically protected chiral and helical Majorana edge modes are robust against weak disorder in the quasicrystalline lattice. More fascinating is the discovery of disorder-induced topologically nontrivial phases exhibiting chiral and helical Majorana edge modes in class D and DIII topological superconductor systems, respectively. Our findings open the door for the research on disorder-induced Majorana edge modes in quasicrystalline systems.
We show theoretically that, in the limit of weak dispersion, one-dimensional (1D) binary centrosymmetric photonic crystals can support topological edge modes in all photonic band gaps. By analyzing their bulk band topology, these harmonic topological edge modes can be designed in a way that they exist at all photonic band gaps opened at the center of the Brillouin Zone, or at all gaps opened at the zone boundaries, or both. The results may suggest a new approach to achieve robust multi-frequency coupled modes for applications in nonlinear photonics, such as frequency up-conversion.
A strong coupling between the electron spin and its motion is one of the prerequisites of spin-based data storage and electronics. A major obstacle is to find spin-orbit coupled materials where the electron spin can be probed and manipulated on macro scopic length scales, for instance across the gate channel of a spin-transistor. Here, we report on millimeter-scale edge channels with a conductance quantized at a single quantum 1 $times$ $e^2/h$ at zero magnetic field. The quantum transport is found at the lateral edges of three-dimensional topological insulators made of bismuth chalcogenides. The data are explained by a lateral, one-dimensional quantum confinement of non-topological surface states with a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. This edge transport can be switched on and off by an electrostatic field-effect. Our results are fundamentally different from an edge transport in quantum spin Hall insulators and quantum anomalous Hall insula-tors.
