The relationship of the gas bubble size to the size distribution critically influences the effectiveness of electrochemical processes. Several optical and acoustical techniques have been used to characterize the size and emission frequency of bubbles. Here, we used zero-dimensional (0D) ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) buried under a microbath to detect the emission of individual bubbles electrically and to generate statistics on the bubble emission time. The bubble size was evaluated via a simple model of the electrolytic current. We suggest that energy lost during water electrolysis could be used to generate electric pulses at an optimal efficiency with an array of 0D ISFETs.

Within the two antenna model, we develop a theory of the recently observed helicity-sensitive detection of terahertz radiation by FETs. The effect arises because of the mixing of the ac signals produced in the channel by the two antennas. We calculat e the helicity-dependent part of the photoresponse and its dependence on the antenna impedance, gate length, and gate voltage.

We investigate the mechanisms responsible for the low-frequency noise in liquid-gated nano-scale silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (SiNW-FETs) and show that the charge-noise level is lower than elementary charge. Our measurements also show th at ionic strength of the surrounding electrolyte has a minimal effect on the overall noise. Dielectric polarization noise seems to be at the origin of the 1/f noise in our devices. The estimated spectral density of charge noise Sq = 1.6x10-2 e/sqr(Hz) at 10 Hz opens the door to metrological studies with these SiNW-FETs for the electrical detection of a small number of molecules.
We propose a method of constructing cold atom analogs of the spintronic device known as the Datta-Das transistor (DDT), which despite its seminal conceptual role in spintronics, has never been successfully realized with electrons. We propose two alte rnative schemes for an atomic DDT, both of which are based on the experimental setup for tripod stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Both setups involve atomic beams incident on a series of laser fields mimicking the relativistic spin orbit coupling for electrons that is the operating mechanism of the DDT.

Magnetic skyrmions are of considerable interest for low-power memory and logic devices because of high speed at low current and high stability due to topological protection. We propose a skyrmion field-effect transistor based on a gate-controlled Dzy aloshinskii-Moriya interaction. A key working principle of the proposed skyrmion field-effect transistor is a large transverse motion of skyrmion, caused by an effective equilibrium damping-like spin-orbit torque due to spatially inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This large transverse motion can be categorized as the skyrmion Hall effect, but has been unrecognized previously. The propose device is capable of multi-bit operation and Boolean functions, and thus is expected to serve as a low-power logic device based on the magnetic solitons.

We present an atomistic three-dimensional simulation of graphene nanoribbon field effect transistors (GNR-FETs), based on the self-consistent solution of the 3D Poisson and Schroedinger equation with open boundary conditions within the non-equilibriu m Greens Function formalism and a tight-binding hamiltonian. With respect to carbon nanotube FETs, GNR-FETs exhibit comparable performance, reduced sensitivity on the variability of channel chirality, and similar leakage problems due to band-to-band tunneling. Acceptable transistor performance requires effective nanoribbon width of 1-2 nm, that could be obtained with periodic etching patterns or stress patterns.
