Playing with amplitude, phase and frequency of both reference and signal arms, heterodyne holography is well adapted to vibration analysis. Vibration sidebands can be imaged and stroboscopic measurement sensitive to mechanical phase can be made

Frequency- and time-domain Brillouin spectroscopy are powerful tools to read out the mechanical properties of complex systems in material and life sciences. Indeed, coherent acoustic phonons in the time-domain method offer superior depth resolution a nd a stronger signal than incoherent acoustic phonons in the frequency-domain method. However, it does not allow multichannel detection and therefore falls short in signal acquisition speed. Here, we present Brillouin spectroscopy that spans time- and frequency-domain to allow multichannel detection of Brillouin scattering light from coherent acoustic phonons. Our technique maps time-evolve Brillouin oscillations in a chromatic-dispersed laser pulses instantaneous frequency. Spectroscopic heterodyning of the Brillouin oscillations in the frequency domain enhances signal acquisition speed by at least 100-fold over the time-domain method. As a proof of concept, we imaged heterogeneous thin films over a wide bandwidth with nanometer depth resolution. We, therefore, foresee that our approach catalyses future phonon spectroscopy toward real-time mechanical imaging.
We report a high energy-resolution neutron backscattering study to investigate slow motions on nanosecond time scales in highly oriented solid supported phospholipid bilayers of the model system DMPC -d54 (deuterated 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phos hatidylcholine), hydrated with heavy water. This technique allows to discriminate the onset of mobility at different length scales for the different molecular components, as e.g.@ the lipid acyl-chains and the hydration water in between the membrane stacks, respectively, and provides a benchmark test regarding the feasibility of neutron backscattering investigations on these sample systems. We discuss freezing of the lipid acyl-chains, as observed by this technique, and observe a second freezing transition which we attribute to the hydration water.
We demonstrate the in-line holography for soft x-ray vortex beam having an orbital angular momentum. A hologram is recorded as an interference between a Bragg diffraction wave from a fork grating and a divergence wave generated by a Fresnel zone plat e. The obtained images exhibit fork-shaped interference fringes, which confirms the formation of the vortex beam. By analyzing the interference image, we successfully obtained the spiral phase distribution. The results demonstrate that the in-line holography technique is promising for the characterization of topological magnets, such as magnetic skyrmions.

We report experimental results on heterodyne holographic microscopy of subwavelength-sized gold particles. The apparatus uses continuous green laser illumination of the metal beads in a total internal reflection configuration for dark-field operation . Detection of the scattered light at the illumination wavelength on a charge-coupled device array detector enables 3D localization of brownian particles in water
Lipid membranes in a physiological context cannot be understood without taking into account their mobile environment. Here, we report on a high energy-resolution neutron backscattering study to investigate slow motions on nanosecond time scales in hi ghly oriented solid supported phospholipid bilayers of the model system DMPC -d54 (deuterated 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phoshatidylcholine). This technique allows discriminating the Q-dependent onset of mobility and provides a benchmark test regarding the feasibility of dynamical neutron scattering investigations on these sample systems. Apart from freezing of the lipid acyl-chains, we could observe a second freezing temperature that we attribute to the hydration water in between the membrane stacks. The freezing is lowered several degrees as compared to (heavy) bulk water.
