An analytical approach to the theory of electromagnetic waves in nonlinear vacuum is developed. The evolution of the pulse is governed by a system of nonlinear wave vector equations. Exact solution with own angular momentum in form of a shock wave is obtained.

A numerical scheme for solving the nonlinear Heisenberg-Euler equations in up to three spatial dimensions plus time is presented and its properties are discussed. The algorithm is tested in one spatial dimension against a set of already known analyti cal results of vacuum effects such as birefringence and harmonic generation. Its power to go beyond analytically solvable scenarios is demonstrated in 2D. First parallelization scaling tests are conducted in 3D.
We study the wave breaking mechanism for the weakly dispersive defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation with a constant phase dark initial datum that contains a vacuum point at the origin. We prove by means of the exact solution to the initia l value problem that, in the dispersionless limit, the vacuum point is preserved by the dynamics until breaking occurs at a finite critical time. In particular, both Riemann invariants experience a simultaneous breaking at the origin. Although the initial vacuum point is no longer preserved in the presence of a finite dispersion, the critical behaviour manifests itself through an abrupt transition occurring around the breaking time.
The extreme magnetoelectric medium (EME medium) is defined in terms of two medium dyadics, $alpha$, producing electric polarization by the magnetic field and $beta$, producing magnetic polarization by the electric field. Plane-wave propagation of tim e-harmonic fields of fixed finite frequency in the EME medium is studied. It is shown that (if $omega eq 0$) the dispersion equation has a cubic and homogeneous form, whence the wave vector $k$ is either zero or has arbitrary magnitude. In many cases there is no dispersion equation (NDE medium) to restrict the wave vector in an EME medium. Attention is paid to the case where the two medium dyadics have the same set of eigenvectors. In such a case the $k$ vector is restricted to three eigenplanes defined by the medium dyadics. The emergence of such a result is demonstrated by considering a more regular medium, and taking the limit of zero permittivity and permeability. The special case of uniaxial EME medium is studied in detail. It is shown that an interface of a uniaxial EME medium appears as a DB boundary when the axis of the medium is normal to the interface. More in general, EME media display interesting wave effects that can potentially be realized through metasurface engineering.

An averaging method is applied to derive effective approximation to the following singularly perturbed nonlinear stochastic damped wave equation u u_{tt}+u_t=D u+f(u)+ u^alphadot{W} on an open bounded domain $DsubsetR^n$,, $1leq nleq 3$,. Here $ u>0 $ is a small parameter characterising the singular perturbation, and $ u^alpha$,, $0leq alphaleq 1/2$,, parametrises the strength of the noise. Some scaling transformations and the martingale representation theorem yield the following effective approximation for small $ u$, u_t=D u+f(u)+ u^alphadot{W} to an error of $ord{ u^alpha}$,.
We review the theory for photon-photon scattering in vacuum, and some of the proposals for its experimental search, including the results of our recent works on the subject. We then describe a very simple and sensitive proposal of an experiment and d iscuss how it can be used at the present (HERCULES) and the future (ELI) ultrahigh power laser facilities either to find the first evidence of photon-photon scattering in vacuum, or to significantly improve the current experimental limits.
