Polycrystalline sample of the new layered superconductor Bi4O4S3 is successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction method by using Bi, S and Bi2O3 powders with one step reaction. The superconducting transition temperature (Tconset=4.5 K), the zero resistance transition temperature (Tc0=4.07 K) and the diamagnetic transition temperature (4.02 K at H=10 Oe) were confirmed by electrical transport and magnetic measurements. Also, our results indicate a typical type II-superconductor behavior. In addition, a large thermoelectric effect was observed with a dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of about 0.03 at 300K, indicating Bi4O4S3 can be a potential thermoelectric material.

The effects of pressure on the superconducting properties of a Bi-based layered superconductor La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6, which possesses a four-layer-type conducting layer, have been studied through the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility m easurements. The crystal structure under pressure was examined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction at SPring-8. In the low-pressure regime, bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc of ~ 4.5 K was induced by pressure, which was achieved by in-plane chemical pressure effect owing to the compression of the tetragonal structure. In the high-pressure regime above 6.4 GPa, a structural symmetry lowering was observed, and superconducting transitions with a Tc ~ 8 K were observed. Our results suggest the possible commonality on the factor essential for Tc in Bi-based superconductors with two-layer-type and four-layer-type conducting layers.

Electric transport and scanning tunneling spectrum (STS) have been investigated on polycrystalline samples of the new superconductor Bi4O4S3. A weak insulating behavior in the resistive curve has been induced in the normal state when the superconduct ivity is suppressed by applying a magnetic field. Interestingly, a kink appears on the temperature dependence of resistivity near 4 K at all high magnetic fields above 1 T when the bulk superconductivity is completely suppressed. This kink associated with the upper critical field as well as the wide range of excess conductance at low field and high temperature are explained as the possible evidence of strong superconducting fluctuation. From the tunneling spectra, a superconducting gap of about 3 meV is frequently observed yielding a ratio of 2Delta/(kB*Tc) ~ 16.6. This value is much larger than the one predicted by the BCS theory in the weak coupling regime (2Delta/(kB*Tc) ~ 3.53), which suggests the strong coupling superconductivity in the present system. Furthermore, the gapped feature persists on the spectra until 14 K in the STS measurement, which suggests a prominent fluctuation region of superconductivity. Such superconducting fluctuation can survive at very high magnetic fields, which are far beyond the critical fields for bulk superconductivity as inferred both from electric transport and tunneling measurements.
Very recently, as an important step in the development of layered Fe-free pnictide-oxide superconductors, the new phase BaTi2Bi2O was discovered which has the highest TC (about 4.6 K) among all related non-doped systems. In this Letter, we report for the first time the electronic bands, Fermi surface topology, total and partial densities of electronic states for BaTi2Bi2O obtained by means of the first-principles FLAPW-GGA calculations. The inter-atomic bonding picture is described as a high-anisotropic mixture of metallic, covalent, and ionic contributions. Besides, the structural and electronic factors, which can be responsible for the increased transition temperature for BaTi2Bi2O (as compared with related pnictide-oxides BaTi2As2O and BaTi2Sb2O), are discussed.
We report the effect of adipic acid (C6H10O4) doping on lattice parameters, microstructure, critical temperature (Tc), current density (Jc), and irreversibility field (Hirr) for MgB2 superconductor. Actual carbon (C) substitution level for boron (B) is estimated to be from 0.40 percent to 2.95 percent for different doping levels. A reduction in Tc from 38.43 to 34.93 K and in lattice parameter a from 3.084(3) A to 3.075(6) Ais observed for the10 wt percent C6H10O4 doped sample in comparison to pristine MgB2. This is an indication of C substitution at boron sites, with the C coming from the decomposition of C6H10O4 at the time of reaction. Interestingly the doped samples have resulted in significant enhancement of Jc and Hirr. All the doped samples exhibit the Jc value of the order of 10^4 A/cm2 at 5 K and 8 T, which is higher by an order of magnitude as compared to undoped sample. This result indicates that C6H10O4 is a promising material for MgB2 for obtaining the excellent Jc values under higher magnetic fields.
We investigate the external hydrostatic pressure effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of new layered superconductors Bi4O4S3 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2. Though the Tc is found to have moderate decrease from 4.8 K to 4.3 K (dTconset/dP = -0.28 K/GPa) for Bi4O4S3 superconductor, the same increases from 4.6 K to 5 K (dTconset/dP = 0.44 K/GPa) upto 1.31 GPa followed by a sudden decrease from 5 K to 4.7 K upto 1.75 GPa for NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor. The variation of Tc in these systems may be correlated to increase or decrease of the charge carriers in the density of states under externally applied pressure.
