Optical solitons or soliton-like states shed light to blue-shifted frequencies through a resonant emission process. We predict a mechanism by which a second propagating mode is generated. This mode, called negative resonant radiation originates from the coupling of the soliton mode to the negative frequency branch of the dispersion relation. Measurements in both bulk media and photonic crystal fibres confirm our predictions.
High speed optical telecommunication is enabled by wavelength division multiplexing, whereby hundreds of individually stabilized lasers encode the information within a single mode optical fiber. In the seek for larger bandwidth the optical power sent
A convenient for practical use new theoretical approach describing a nonlinear frequency response of the multi-resonant nonlinear ring cavities (RC) to an intense monochromatic wave action is developed. The approach closely relates the many-valuednes
We theoretically study the generation of optical frequency combs and corresponding pulse trains in doubly resonant intracavity second-harmonic generation (SHG). We find that, despite the large temporal walk-off characteristic of realistic cavity syst
We report measurements that show extreme events in the statistics of resonant radiation emitted from spatiotemporal light bullets. We trace the origin of these extreme events back to instabilities leading to steep gradients in the temporal profile of
We show that a temporal soliton can induce resonant radiation by three-wave mixing nonlinearities. This constitutes a new class of resonant radiation whose spectral positions are parametrically tunable. The experimental verification is done in a peri
