We have analyzed Spitzer and NASA/IRTF 2 - 35 mum spectra of the warm, ~350 K circumstellar dust around the nearby MS star {eta} Corvi (F2V, 1.4 pm 0.3 Gyr). The spectra show clear evidence for warm, water- and carbon-rich dust at ~3 AU from the central star, in the systems Terrestrial Habitability Zone. Spectral features due to ultra-primitive cometary material were found, in addition to features due to impact produced silica and high temperature carbonaceous phases. At least 9 x 10^18 kg of 0.1 - 100 mum warm dust is present in a collisional equilibrium distribution with dn/da ~ a^-3.5, the equivalent of a 130 km radius KBO of 1.0 g/cm^3 density and similar to recent estimates of the mass delivered to the Earth at 0.6 - 0.8 Gyr during the Late Heavy Bombardment. We conclude that the parent body was a Kuiper-Belt body or bodies which captured a large amount of early primitive material in the first Myrs of the systems lifetime and preserved it in deep freeze at ~150 AU. At ~1.4 Gyr they were prompted by dynamical stirring of their parent Kuiper Belt into spiraling into the inner system, eventually colliding at 5-10 km/sec with a rocky planetary body of mass leq MEarth at ~3 AU, delivering large amounts of water (>0.1% of MEarths Oceans) and carbon-rich material. The Spitzer spectrum also closely matches spectra reported for the Ureilite meteorites of the Sudan Almahata Sitta fall in 2008, suggesting that one of the Ureilite parent bodies was a KBO.

We present 24 micron photometry of the intermediate-age open cluster Praesepe. We assemble a catalog of 193 probable cluster members that are detected in optical databases, the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), and at 24 micron, within an area of ~ 2.47 square degrees. Mid-IR excesses indicating debris disks are found for one early-type and for three solar-type stars. Corrections for sampling statistics yield a 24 micron excess fraction (debris disk fraction) of 6.5 +- 4.1% for luminous and 1.9 +- 1.2% for solar-type stars. The incidence of excesses is in agreement with the decay trend of debris disks as a function of age observed for other cluster and field stars. The values also agree with those for older stars, indicating that debris generation in the zones that emit at 24 micron falls to the older 1-10 Gyr field star sample value by roughly 750 Myr. We discuss our results in the context of previous observations of excess fractions for early- and solar-type stars. We show that solar-type stars lose their debris disk 24 micron excesses on a shorter timescale than early-type stars. Simplistic Monte Carlo models suggest that, during the first Gyr of their evolution, up to 15-30% of solar-type stars might undergo an orbital realignment of giant planets such as the one thought to have led to the Late Heavy Bombardment, if the length of the bombardment episode is similar to the one thought to have happened in our Solar System. In the Appendix, we determine the clusters parameters via boostrap Monte Carlo isochrone fitting, yielding an age of 757 Myr (+- 36 Myr at 1 sigma confidence) and a distance of 179 pc (+- 2 pc at 1 sigma confidence), not allowing for systematic errors.

The giant planets of our solar system possess envelopes consisting mainly of hydrogen and helium but are also significantly enriched in heavier elements relatively to our Sun. In order to better constrain how these heavy elements have been delivered, we quantify the amount accreted during the so-called late heavy bombardment, at a time when planets were fully formed and planetesimals could not sink deep into the planets. On the basis of the Nice model, we obtain accreted masses (in terrestrial units) equal to $0.15pm0.04 rm,M_oplus$ for Jupiter, and $0.08 pm 0.01 rm,M_oplus$ for Saturn. For the two other giant planets, the results are found to depend mostly on whether they switched position during the instability phase. For Uranus, the accreted mass is $0.051 pm 0.003 rm,M_oplus$ with an inversion and $0.030 pm 0.001 rm,M_oplus$ without an inversion. Neptune accretes $0.048 pm 0.015 rm,M_oplus$ in models in which it is initially closer to the Sun than Uranus, and $0.066 pm 0.006 rm,M_oplus$ otherwise. With well-mixed envelopes, this corresponds to an increase in the enrichment over the solar value of $0.033 pm 0.001$ and $0.074 pm 0.007$ for Jupiter and Saturn, respectively. For the two other planets, we find the enrichments to be $2.1 pm 1.4$ (w/ inversion) or $1.2 pm 0.7$ (w/o inversion) for Uranus, and $2.0 pm 1.2$ (w/ inversion) or $2.7 pm 1.6$ (w/o inversion) for Neptune. This is clearly insufficient to explain the inferred enrichments of $sim 4$ for Jupiter, $sim 7$ for Saturn and $sim 45$ for Uranus and Neptune.
The circumstellar disk of AB Aurigae has garnered strong attention owing to the apparent existence of spirals at a relatively young stage and also the asymmetric disk traced in thermal dust emission. However, the physical conditions of the spirals ar e still not well understood. The origin of the asymmetric thermal emission is unclear. We observed the disk at 230 GHz (1.3 mm) in both the continuum and the spectral line ^12CO J=2-1 with IRAM 30-m, the Plateau de Bure interferometer, and the Submillimeter Array to sample all spatial scales from 0.37 to about 50. To combine the data obtained from these telescopes, several methods and calibration issues were checked and discussed. The 1.3 mm continuum (dust) emission is resolved into inner disk and outer ring. Molecular gas at high velocities traced by the CO line is detected next to the stellar location. The inclination angle of the disk is found to decrease toward the center. On a larger scale, based on the intensity weighted dispersion and the integrated intensity map of ^12CO J=2-1, four spirals are identified, where two of them are also detected in the near infrared. The total gas mass of the 4 spirals (M_spiral) is 10^-7 < M_spiral < 10^-5 M_sun, which is 3 orders of magnitude smaller than the mass of the gas ring. Surprisingly, the CO gas inside the spiral is apparently counter-rotating with respect to the CO disk, and it only exhibits small radial motion. The wide gap, the warped disk, and the asymmetric dust ring suggest that there is an undetected companion with a mass of 0.03 M_sun at a radius of 45 AU. Although an hypothetical fly-by cannot be ruled out, the most likely explanation of the AB Aurigae system may be inhomogeneous accretion well above or below the main disk plane from the remnant envelope, which can explain both the rotation and large-scale motions detected with the 30-m image.
We study the solar eruptive event on 2017 September 10 that produced long-lasting $>$100 MeV $gamma$-ray emission and a ground level enhancement (GLE72). The origin of the high-energy ions producing late-phase gamma-ray emission (LPGRE) is still an o pen question, but a possible explanation is proton acceleration at coronal shocks produced by coronal mass ejections. We examine a common shock acceleration origin for both the LPGRE and GLE72. The $gamma$-ray emission observed by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope exhibits a weak impulsive phase, consistent with that observed in hard X-and $gamma$-ray line flare emissions, and what appear to be two distinct stages of LPGRE. From a detailed modeling of the shock wave, we derive the 3D distribution and temporal evolution of the shock parameters, and we examine the shock wave magnetic connection with the visible solar disk. The evolution of shock parameters on field lines returning to the visible disk, mirrors the two stages of LPGRE. We find good agreement between the time history of $>$100 MeV $gamma$-rays and one produced by a basic shock acceleration model. The time history of shock parameters magnetically mapped to Earth agrees with the rates observed by the Fort Smith neutron monitor during the first hour of the GLE72 if we include a 30% contribution of flare-accelerated protons during the first 10 minutes, having a release time following the time history of nuclear $gamma$-rays. Our analysis provides compelling evidence for a common shock origin for protons producing the LPGRE and most of the particles observed in GLE72.
Aims. Eta Cars ultra-violet, optical, and X-ray light curves and its spectrum suggest a physical change in its stellar wind over the last decade. It was proposed that the mass-loss rate decreased by a factor of about 2 in the last 15 years. We comple ment these recent results by investigating the past evolution and the current state of eta Car in the near-infrared (IR). Methods. We present JHKL photometry of eta Car obtained at SAAO Sutherland from 2004-2013 with the Mk II photometer at the 0.75-m telescope and JHKs photometry with SIRIUS at the 1.4-m IRSF telescope from 2012-2013. The near-IR light curves since 1972 are analyzed. Results. The long-term brightening trends in eta Cars JHKL light curves were discontinuous around the 1998 periastron passage. After 1998, the star shows excess emission above the extrapolated trend from earlier dates, foremost in J and H, and the blueward, cyclical progression in its near-IR colors is accelerated. The near-IR color evolution is strongly correlated with the periastron passages. After correcting for the secular trend we find that the color evolution matches an apparent increase in blackbody temperature of an optically thick near-IR emitting plasma component from about 3500 to 6000 K over the last 20 years. Conclusions. We suggest that the changing near-IR emission may be caused by variability in optically thick bremsstrahlung emission. Periastron passages play a key role in the observed excess near-IR emission after 1998 and the long-term color evolution. We thus propose as a hypothesis that angular momentum transfer (via tidal acceleration) during periastron passages leads to sudden changes in eta Cars atmosphere resulting in a long-term decrease in the mass-loss rate.
