Coherent control experiments using a pair of collinear femtosecond laser pulses have been carried out to manipulate longitudinal optical (LO) phonon-plasmon coupled (LOPC) modes in both p- and n-type GaAs. By tuning the interpulse separation, remarkably distinct responses have been observed in the two samples. To understand the results obtained a phenomenological model taking the delayed formation of coherent LOPC modes into account is proposed. The model suggests that the lifetime of coherent LOPC modes plays a key role and the interference of the coherent LO phonons excited successively by two pump pulses strongly affects the manipulation of coherent LOPC modes.

The coupling between longitudinal optical (LO) phonons and plasmons plays a fundamental role in determining the performance of doped semiconductor devices. In this work, we report a comparative investigation into the dependence of the coupling on tem perature and doping in n- and p-type GaAs by using ultrafast optical phonon spectroscopy. A suppression of coherent oscillations has been observed in p-type GaAs at lower temperature, strikingly different from n-type GaAs and other materials in which coherent oscillations are strongly enhanced by cooling. We attribute this unexpected observation to a cooling-induced elongation of the depth of the depletion layer which effectively increases the screening time of surface field due to a slow diffusion of photoexcited carriers in p-type GaAs. Such an increase breaks the requirement for the generation of coherent LO phonons and, in turn, LO phonon-plasmon coupled modes because of their delayed formation in time.
Ultrashort light pulses can selectively excite charges, spins and phonons in materials, providing a powerful approach for manipulating their properties. Here we use femtosecond laser pulses to coherently manipulate the electron and phonon distributio ns, and their couplings, in the charge density wave (CDW) material 1T-TaSe$_2$. After exciting the material with a short light pulse, spatial smearing of the electrons launches a coherent lattice breathing mode, which in turn modulates the electron temperature. This indicates a bi-directional energy exchange between the electrons and the strongly-coupled phonons. By tuning the laser excitation fluence, we can control the magnitude of the electron temperature modulation, from ~ 200 K in the case of weak excitation, to ~ 1000 K for strong laser excitation. This is accompanied by a switching of the dominant mechanism from anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling to coherent electron-phonon coupling, as manifested by a phase change of $pi$ in the electron temperature modulation. Our approach thus opens up possibilities for coherently manipulating the interactions and properties of quasi-2D and other quantum materials using light.

We report on strong coupling of the charge carrier plasmon $omega_{PL}$ in graphene with the surface optical phonon $omega_{SO}$ of the underlying SiC(0001) substrate with low electron concentration ($n=1.2times 10^{15}$ $cm^{-3}$) in the long wavele ngth limit ($q_parallel rightarrow 0$). Energy dependent energy-loss spectra give for the first time clear evidence of two coupled phonon-plasmon modes $omega_pm$ separated by a gap between $omega_{SO}$ ($q_parallel rightarrow 0$) and $omega_{TO}$ ($q_parallel >> 0$), the transverse optical phonon mode, with a Fano-type shape, in particular for higher primary electron energies ($E_0 ge 20eV$). A simplified model based on dielectric theory is able to simulate our energy - loss spectra as well as the dispersion of the two coupled phonon-plasmon modes $omega_pm$. In contrast, Liu and Willis [1] postulate in their recent publication no gap and a discontinuous dispersion curve with a one-peak structure from their energy-loss data.
Carbon nanotubes provide a rare access point into the plasmon physics of one-dimensional electronic systems. By assembling purified nanotubes into uniformly sized arrays, we show that they support coherent plasmon resonances, that these plasmons enha nce and hybridize with phonons, and that the phonon-plasmon resonances have quality factors as high as 10. Because coherent nanotube plasmonics can strengthen light-matter interactions, it provides a compelling platform for surface-enhanced infrared spectroscopy and tunable, high-performance optical devices at the nanometer scale.

The coherence of collective modes, such as phonons, and their modulation of the electronic states are long sought in complex systems, which is a cross-cutting issue in photovoltaics and quantum electronics. In photovoltaic cells and lasers based on m etal halide perovskites, the presence of polaronic coupling, i.e., photocarriers dressed by the macroscopic motion of charged lattice, assisted by terahertz (THz) longitudinal optical (LO) phonons, has been intensely studied yet still debated. This may be key for explaining the remarkable properties of the perovskite materials, e.g., defect tolerance, long charge lifetimes and diffusion length. Here we use the intense single-cycle THz pulse with the peak electric field up to $E_{THz}=$1000,kV/cm to drive coherent band-edge oscillations at room temperature in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$. We reveal the oscillatory behavior dominantly to a specific quantized lattice vibration mode at $omega_{mathrm{LO}}sim$4 THz, being both dipole and momentum forbidden. THz-driven coherent dynamics exhibits distinguishing features: the room temperature coherent oscillations at $omega_{mathrm{LO}}$ longer than 1 ps in both single crystals and thin films; the {em mode-selective} modulation of different band edge states assisted by electron-phonon ($e$-$ph$) interaction; {em dynamic mode splitting} controlled by temperature due to entropy and anharmonicity of organic cations. Our results demonstrate intense THz-driven coherent band-edge modulation as a powerful probe of electron-lattice coupling phenomena and provide compelling implications for polaron correlations in perovskites.
