We study high speed collision and reconnection of cosmic strings in the type-II regime (scalar-to-gauge mass ratios larger than one) of the Abelian Higgs model. New phenomena such as multiple reconnections and clustering of small scale structure have been observed and reported in a previous paper, as well as the fact that the previously observed loop that mediates the second intercommutation is only a loop for sufficiently large beta = m_scalar^2/m_gauge^2. Here we give a more detailed account of our study, involving 3D numerical simulations with beta in the range 1 to 64, the largest value simulated to date, as well as 2D simulations of vortex-antivortex (v-av) collisions to understand the possible relation to the new 3D phenomena. Our simulations give further support to the idea that Abelian Higgs strings never pass through each other, unless this is the result of a double reconnection; and that the critical velocity (v_c) for double reconnection goes down with increasing mass ratio, but energy conservation suggests a lower bound around 0.77c. We discuss the qualitative change in the intermediate state observed for large mass ratios. We relate it to a similar change in the outcome of 2D v-av collisions in the form of radiating bound states. In the deep type-II regime the angular dependence of v_c for double reconnection does not seem to conform to semi-analytic predictions based on the Nambu-Goto approximation. We model the high angle collisions reasonably well by incorporating the effect of core interactions, and the torque they produce on the approaching strings, into the Nambu-Goto description of the collision. An interesting, counterintuitive aspect is that the effective collision angle is smaller because of the torque. Our results suggest differences in network evolution and radiation output with respect to the predictions based on Nambu-Goto or beta = 1 Abelian Higgs dynamics.

We discuss dual formulations of vortex strings (magnetic flux tubes) in the four-dimensional ${cal N} =1$ supersymmetric Abelian Higgs model with the Fayet--Iliopoulos term in the superspace formalism. The Lagrangian of the model is dualized into a L agrangian of the $BF$-type described by a chiral spinor gauge superfield including a 2-form gauge field. The dual Lagrangian is further dualized into a Lagrangian given by a chiral spinor superfield including a massive 2-form field. In both of the dual formulations, we obtain a superfield into which the vortex strings and their superpartners are embedded. We show the dual Lagrangians in terms of a superspace and a component formalism. In these dual Lagrangians, we explicitly show that the vortex strings of the original model are described by a string current electrically coupled with the 2-form gauge field or the massive 2-form field.
We study field theoretical models for cosmic strings with flat directions in curved space-time. More precisely, we consider minimal models with semilocal, axionic and tachyonic strings, respectively. In flat space-time, the string solutions of these models have a flat direction, i.e., a uniparametric family of configurations with the same energy exists which is associated to a zero mode. We prove that the zero mode survives coupling to gravity, and study the role of the flat direction when coupling the strings to gravity. Even though the total energy of the solution is the same, and thus the global properties of the family of solutions remains unchanged, the energy density, and therefore the gravitational properties, are different. The local structure of the solutions depends strongly on the value of the parameter describing the flat direction; for example, for supermassive strings, the value of the free parameter can determine the size of the universe.
We extend the effective field theory (EFT) formalism for gravitational radiation from a binary system of compact objects to the case of extended objects. In particular, we study the EFT for a binary system consisting of two infinitely-long cosmic str ings with small velocity and small spatial substructure, or wiggles. The complexity of the system requires the introduction of two perturbative expansion parameters, constructed from the velocity and size of the wiggles, in contrast with the point particle case, for which a single parameter is sufficient. This further requires us to assign new power counting rules in the system. We integrate out the modes corresponding to potential gravitons, yielding an effective action for the radiation gravitons. We show that this action describes a changing quadrupole, sourced by the bending modes of the string, which in turn generates gravitational waves. We study the ultraviolet divergences in this description, and use them to obtain the classical renormalization group flow of the string tension in such a setting.
The Higgs could couple to a topological 4-form sector which yields a complex vacuum structure. In general such couplings could lead to direct CP violation in the Higgs sector. In many of the Higgs vacua electroweak symmetry is unbroken. In just as ma ny it breaks when the 4-form flux is large enough. For a fixed value of flux, the symmetry breaking vacua have a smaller vacuum energy than the symmetric ones, where the difference is quantized because it is set by the $4$-form flux. This leads to the possibility that there is a value of the 4-form flux for any UV contributions to the Higgs {it vev} that automatically cancels it down to the right value, $sim$ TeV, if the 4-form charges are quantized in the units of the electroweak scale. This would still leave the cosmological constant which could be selected anthropically.
We summarize previous results on the most general Proca theory in 4 dimensions containing only first-order derivatives in the vector field (second-order at most in the associated Stuckelberg scalar) and having only three propagating degrees of freedo m with dynamics controlled by second-order equations of motion. Discussing the Hessian condition used in previous works, we conjecture that, as in the scalar galileon case, the most complete action contains only a finite number of terms with second-order derivatives of the Stuckelberg field describing the longitudinal mode, which is in agreement with the results of JCAP 1405, 015 (2014) and Phys. Lett. B 757, 405 (2016) and complements those of JCAP 1602, 004 (2016). We also correct and complete the parity violating sector, obtaining an extra term on top of the arbitrary function of the field $A_mu$, the Faraday tensor $F_{mu u}$ and its Hodge dual $tilde{F}_{mu u}$.
