Spin currents which allow for a dissipationless transport of information can be generated by electric fields in semiconductor heterostructures in the presence of a Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. The largest Rashba effects occur for electronic surface states of metals but these cannot exist but under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Here, we reveal a giant Rashba effect ({alpha}_R ~ 1.5E-10 eVm) on a surface state of Ir(111). We demonstrate that its spin splitting and spin polarization remain unaffected when Ir is covered with graphene. The graphene protection is, in turn, sufficient for the spin-split surface state to survive in ambient atmosphere. We discuss this result along with evidences for a topological protection of the surface state.

After the first unequivocal demonstration of spin transport in graphene (Tombros et al., 2007), surprisingly at room temperature, it was quickly realized that this novel material was relevant for both fundamental spintronics and future applications. Over the decade since, exciting results have made the field of graphene spintronics blossom, and a second generation of studies has extended to new two-dimensional (2D) compounds. This Colloquium reviews recent theoretical and experimental advances on electronic spin transport in graphene and related 2D materials, focusing on emergent phenomena in van der Waals heterostructures and the new perspectives provided by them. These phenomena include proximity-enabled spin-orbit effects, the coupling of electronic spin to light, electrical tunability, and 2D magnetism.
Topological insulators (TIs) are new insulating materials with exotic surface states, where the motion of charge carriers is described by the Dirac equations and their spins are locked in a perpendicular direction to their momentum. Recent studies by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy have demonstrated that a conventional two-dimensional electron gas can coexist with the topological surface state due to the quantum confinement effect. The coexistence is expected to give rise to exotic transport properties, which, however, have not been explored so far. Here, we report a magneto-transport study on single crystals of the topological insulator BiSbTe3. Besides Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and weak anti-localization (WAL) from the topological surface state, we also observed a crossover from the weak anti-localization to weak localization (WL) with increasing magnetic field, which is temperature dependent and exhibits two-dimensional features. The crossover is proposed to be the transport manifestation of the coexistence of the topological surface state and two-dimensional electron gas on the surface of TIs.
Topological antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics is an emerging field of research, which exploits the Neel vector to control the topological electronic states and the associated spin-dependent transport properties. A recently discovered Neel spin-orbi t torque has been proposed to electrically manipulate Dirac band crossings in antiferromagnets; however, a reliable AFM material to realize these properties in practice is missing. Here, we predict that room temperature AFM metal MnPd$_{2}$ allows the electrical control of the Dirac nodal line by the Neel spin-orbit torque. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, we show that reorientation of the Neel vector leads to switching between the symmetry-protected degenerate state and the gapped state associated with the dispersive Dirac nodal line at the Fermi energy. The calculated spin Hall conductivity strongly depends on the Neel vector orientation and can be used to experimentally detect the predicted effect using a proposed spin-orbit torque device. Our results indicate that AFM Dirac nodal line metal MnPd$_{2}$ represents a promising material for topological AFM spintronics.
Massless Dirac electrons in condensed matter have attracted considerable attention. Unlike conventional electrons, Dirac electrons are described in the form of two-component wave functions. In the surface state of topological insulators, these two co mponents are associated with the spin degrees of freedom, hence governing the magnetic properties. Therefore, the observation of the two-component wave function provides a useful clue for exploring the novel spin phenomena. Here we show that the two-component nature is manifested in the Landau levels (LLs) whose degeneracy is lifted by a Coulomb potential. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we visualize energy and spatial structures of LLs in a topological insulator Bi2Se3. The observed potential-induced LL splitting and internal structures of Landau orbits are distinct from those in a conventional electron system and are well reproduced by a two-component model Dirac Hamiltonian. Our model further predicts non-trivial energy-dependent spin-magnetization textures in a potential variation. This provides a way to manipulate spins in the topological surface state.
Graphene, a two dimensional (2D) carbon sheet, acquires many of its amazing properties from the Dirac point nature of its electronic structures with negligible spin-orbit coupling. Extending to 3D space, graphene networks with negative curvature, cal led Mackay-Terrones crystals (MTC), have been proposed and experimentally explored, yet their topological properties remain to be discovered. Based on the first-principle calculations, we report an all-carbon MTC with topologically non-trivial electronic states by exhibiting node-lines in bulk. When the node-lines are projected on to surfaces to form circles, drumhead like flat surface bands nestled inside of the circles are formed. The bulk node-line can evolve into 3D Dirac point in the absence of inversion symmetry, which has shown its plausible existence in recent experiments.
