The influence of the quadrupole shape fluctuations on the dipole vibrations in transitional nuclei is investigated in the framework of the Instantaneous Shape Sampling Model, which combines the Interacting Boson Model for the slow collective quadrupole motion with the Random Phase Approximation for the rapid dipole vibrations. Coupling to the complex background configurations is taken into account by folding the results with a Lorentzian with an energy dependent width. The low-energy energy portion of the $gamma$- absorption cross section, which is important for photo-nuclear processes, is studied for the isotopic series of Kr, Xe, Ba, and Sm. The experimental cross sections are well reproduced. The low-energy cross section is determined by the Landau fragmentation of the dipole strength and its redistribution caused by the shape fluctuations. Collisional damping only wipes out fluctuations of the absorption cross section, generating the smooth energy dependence observed in experiment. In the case of semi-magic nuclei, shallow pygmy resonances are found in agreement with experiment.

Evidence of strong coupling of quasiparticle excitations with gamma-vibration is shown to occur in transitional nuclei. High-spin band structures in [166,168,170,172]Er are studied by employing the recently developed multi-quasiparticle triaxial proj ected shell model approach. It is demonstrated that a low-lying K=3 band observed in these nuclei, the nature of which has remained unresolved, originates from the angular-momentum projection of triaxially deformed two-quasiparticle (qp) configurations. Further, it is predicted that the structure of this band depends critically on the shell filling: in [166]Er the lowest K=3 2-qp band is formed from proton configuration, in [168]Er the K=3 neutron and proton 2-qp bands are almost degenerate, and for [170]Er and [172]Er the neutron K=3 2-qp band becomes favored and can cross the gamma-vibrational band at high rotational frequencies. We consider that these are few examples in even-even nuclei, where the three basic modes of rotational, vibrational, and quasi-particle excitations co-exist close to the yrast line.

The absorption of pi^+ on ^3He in the $Delta$-region is evaluated with exact inclusion of the final state interaction among the three emerging protons. The absorption is described by a $pi N to Delta$ vertex and a $NDelta - NN$ transition t-matrix wh ich are calculated from a phenomenological model for NN and pi d reactions. In a calculation where the initial pion scattering effects are neglected, the predicted peaks of the pion absorption cross sections for ^2H and ^3He lie too high in energy in relation to the data. The effect of the final state three-nucleon interaction turns out to be too small for changing the magnitude and shifting the peak position of the total absorption cross section for ^3He. We demonstrate that the adjustment of the peak position for the deuteron cross section by small modifications of the $Delta$-parameters, automatically leads to the correct peak position in ^3He.

Within the dinuclear system (DNS) conception, instead of solving Fokker-Planck Equation (FPE) analytically, the Master equation is solved numerically to calculate the fusion probability of super-heavy nuclei, so that the harmonic oscillator approxima tion to the potential energy of the DNS is avoided. The relative motion concerning the energy, the angular momentum, and the fragment deformation relaxations is explicitly treated to couple with the diffusion process, so that the nucleon transition probabilities, which are derived microscopically, are time-dependent. Comparing with the analytical solution of FPE, our results preserve more dynamical effects. The calculated evaporation residue cross sections for one-neutron emission channel of Pb-based reactions are basically in agreement with the known experimental data within one order of magnitude.

The 62Ni(n,gamma)63Ni(t_1/2=100+-2 yrs) reaction plays an important role in the control of the flow path of the slow neutron-capture (s-) nucleosynthesis process. We have measured for the first time the total cross section of this reaction for a quas i-Maxwellian (kT = 25 keV) neutron flux. The measurement was performed by fast-neutron activation, combined with accelerator mass spectrometry to detect directly the 63Ni product nuclei. The experimental value of 28.4+-2.8 mb, fairly consistent with a recent theoretical estimate, affects the calculated net yield of 62Ni itself and the whole distribution of nuclei with 62<A <90 produced by the weak s-process in massive stars.

The cross section of the $^{9}$Be(n,$gamma$)$^{10}$Be reaction was calculated in the direct capture model. All parameters of the calculations were adjusted to properties of the $^{9}$Be + n system at thermal energies. The calculated cross section at thermonuclear energies shows the expected $1/v$ behavior of $s$-wave capture at low energies, but increases towards higher energies as typical $p$-wave capture. Excellent agreement between new experimental data in the astrophysically relevant energy region and the present calculation is found.
