La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) thin films under compressive strain have an orthorhombic symmetry with (1-10)o and (001)o in-plane orientations. (The subscript o denotes the orthorhombic symmetry.) Here, we grew LSMO on cubic (LaAlO3)0.3-(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 (LSAT) substrates and observed a uniaxial contribution to the magnetic anisotropy which is related to the orthorhombic crystal structure. Since the lattice mismatch is equal in the two directions, the general understanding of anisotropy in LSMO, which relates the uniaxial anisotropy to differences in strain, cannot explain the results. These findings suggest that the oxygen octahedra rotations associated with the orthorhombic structure, possibly resulting in different Mn-O-Mn bond angles and therefore a change in magnetic coupling between the [1-10]o and [001]o directions, determine the anisotropy. We expect these findings to lead to a better understanding of the microscopic origin of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in LSMO.

When comparing a set of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) samples, the Curie temperature (TC) of the samples is an important figure of merit for the sample quality. Therefore, a reliable method to determine TC is required. Here, a method based on the analysis of the magnetization loops is proposed.
The rate and pathways of relaxation of a magnetic medium to its equilibrium following excitation with intense and short laser pulses are the key ingredients of ultrafast optical control of spins. Here we study experimentally the evolution of the magn etization and magnetic anisotropy of thin films of a ferromagnetic metal galfenol (Fe$_{0.81}$Ga$_{0.19}$) resulting from excitation with a femtosecond laser pulse. From the temporal evolution of the hysteresis loops we deduce that the magnetization $M_S$ and magnetic anisotropy parameters $K$ recover within a nanosecond, and the ratio between $K$ and $M_S$ satisfies the thermal equilibriums power law in the whole time range spanning from a few picoseconds to 3 nanoseconds. We further use the experimentally obtained relaxation times of $M_S$ and $K$ to analyze the laser-induced precession and demonstrate how they contribute to its frequency evolution at the nanosecond timescale.
We report about La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 single crystal manganite thin films in interaction with a gold capping layer. With respect to uncoated manganite layers of the same thickness, Au-capped 4 nm-thick manganite films reveal a dramatic reduction (about 18 5 K) of the Curie temperature TC and a lower saturation low-temperature magnetization M0. A sizeable TC reduction (about 60 K) is observed even when an inert SrTiO3 layer is inserted between the gold film and the 4 nm-thick manganite layer, suggesting that this effect might have an electrostatic origin.
Multiferroic properties of orthorhombic HoMnO3 (Pbnm space group) are significantly modified by epitaxial compressive strain along the a-axis. We are able to focus on the effect of strain solely along the a-axis by using an YAlO3 (010) substrate, whi ch has only a small lattice mismatch with HoMnO3 along the other in-plane direction (the c-axis). Multiferroic properties of strained and relaxed HoMnO3 thin films are compared with those reported for bulk, and are found to differ widely. A relaxed film exhibits bulk-like properties such as a ferroelectric transition temperature of 25 K and an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below 39 K, with an ordering wave vector of (0 qb 0) with qb ~ 0.41 at 10 K. A strained film becomes ferroelectric already at 37.5 K and has an incommensurate magnetic order with qb ~ 0.49 at 10 K.
The integration of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials into hybrid heterostructures yields multifunctional systems with improved or novel functionality. We here report on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic d ouble perovskite Sr2CrReO6, grown as epitaxial thin film onto ferroelectric BaTiO3. As a function of temperature, the crystal-structure of BaTiO3 undergoes phase transitions, which induce qualitative changes in the magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnet. We observe abrupt changes in the coercive field of up to 1.2T along with resistance changes of up to 6.5%. These results are attributed to the high sensitivity of the double perovskites to mechanical deformation.
