Total correlation (TC) is a fundamental concept in information theory to measure the statistical dependency of multiple random variables. Recently, TC has shown effectiveness as a regularizer in many machine learning tasks when minimizing/maximizing the correlation among random variables is required. However, to obtain precise TC values is challenging, especially when the closed-form distributions of variables are unknown. In this paper, we introduced several sample-based variational TC estimators. Specifically, we connect the TC with mutual information (MI) and constructed two calculation paths to decompose TC into MI terms. In our experiments, we estimated the true TC values with the proposed estimators in different simulation scenarios and analyzed the properties of the TC estimators.
We study the behavior of the mutual information (MI) in various quadratic fermionic chains, with and without pairing terms and both with short- and long-range hoppings. The models considered include the short-range Kitaev model and also cases in whic h the area law for the entanglement entropy is - logarithmically or non-logarithmically - violated. When the area law is violated at most logarithmically, the MI is a monotonically increasing function of the conformal four-point ratio x, also for the Kitaev model. Where non-logarithmic violations of the area law are present, then non-monotonic features of MI can be observed, with a structure of peaks related to the spatial configuration of Bell pairs, and the four-point ratio x is found to be not sufficient to capture the whole structure of the MI. For the model exhibiting perfect volume law, the MI vanishes identically. For the Kitaev model, when it is gapped or the range of the pairing is large enough, then the results have vanishing MI for small x. A discussion of the comparison with the results obtained by the AdS/CFT correspondence in the strong coupling limit is presented.
One way to diagnose chaos in bipartite unitary channels is via the tripartite information of the corresponding Choi state, which for certain choices of the subsystems reduces to the negative conditional mutual information (CMI). We study this quantit y from a quantum information-theoretic perspective to clarify its role in diagnosing scrambling. When the CMI is zero, we find that the channel has a special normal form consisting of local channels between individual inputs and outputs. However, we find that arbitrarily low CMI does not imply arbitrary proximity to a channel of this form, although it does imply a type of approximate recoverability of one of the inputs. When the CMI is maximal, we find that the residual channel from an individual input to an individual output is completely depolarizing when the other input is maximally mixed. However, we again find that this result is not robust. We also extend some of these results to the multipartite case and to the case of Haar-random pure input states. Finally, we look at the relationship between tripartite information and its Renyi-2 version which is directly related to out-of-time-order correlation functions. In particular, we demonstrate an arbitrarily large gap between the two quantities.
We investigate how entangled inertial Unruh-DeWitt detectors are affected by interaction with a quantum field using a nonperturbative methods. Inertial detectors in a $(3+1)$-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with instantaneous switching ($delta$-switc hing) experience degradation of their initial entanglement as their coupling strength with a scalar field increases. Somewhat surprisingly, initially separable or weakly entangled detectors can extract mutual information from the vacuum. We also find that entanglement degradation is not reduced if communication via the field is possible; rather this only changes the manner in which entanglement is degraded.
The holographic principle states that on a fundamental level the information content of a region should depend on its surface area rather than on its volume. This counterintuitive idea which has its roots in the nonextensive nature of black-hole entr opy serves as a guiding principle in the search for the fundamental laws of Planck-scale physics. In this paper we show that a similar phenomenon emerges from the established laws of classical and quantum physics: the information contained in part of a system in thermal equilibrium obeys an area law. While the maximal information per unit area depends classically only on the number of microscopic degrees of freedom, it may diverge as the inverse temperature in quantum systems. A rigorous relation between area laws and correlations is established and their explicit behavior is revealed for a large class of quantum many-body states beyond equilibrium systems.
