Using high resolution VLT spectra, we study the multi-component outflow systems of two quasars exhibiting intrinsic Fe II absorption (QSO 2359-1241 and SDSS J0318-0600). From the extracted ionic column densities and using photoionization modeling we determine the gas density, total column density, and ionization parameter for several of the components. For each object the largest column density component is also the densest, and all other components have densities of roughly 1/4 of that of the main component. We demonstrate that all the absorbers lie roughly at the same distance from the source. Further, we calculate the total kinetic luminosities and mass outflow rates of all components and show that these quantities are dominated by the main absorption component.

We present a detailed analysis of the Astrophysical Research Consortium 3.5 m telescope spectrum of QSO SDSS J0838+2955. The object shows three broad absorption line (BAL) systems at 22,000, 13,000, and 4900 km s^-1 blueshifted from the systemic reds hift of z=2.043. Of particular interest is the lowest velocity system that displays absorption from low-ionization species such as Mg II, Al II, Si II, Si II*, Fe II and Fe II*. Accurate column densities were measured for all transitions in this lowest velocity BAL using an inhomogeneous absorber model. The ratio of column densities of Si II* and Fe II* with respect to their ground states gave an electron number density of log n_e (cm^-3) = 3.75 +/- 0.22 for the outflow. Photoionization modeling with careful regards to chemical abundances and the incident spectral energy distribution predicts an ionization parameter of log U_H = -1.93 +/- 0.21 and a hydrogen column density of log N_H (cm^-2) = 20.80 +/- 0.28. This places the outflow at 3.3+1.5-1.0 kpc from the central AGN. Assuming that the fraction of solid angle subtended by the outflow is 0.2, these values yield a kinetic luminosity of (4.5+3.1-1.8) x 10^45 erg s^-1, which is (1.4+1.1-0.6)% the bolometric luminosity of the QSO itself. Such large kinetic luminosity suggests that QSO outflows are a major contributor to AGN feedback mechanisms.

We present new VLT spectroscopic observations of the most distant quasar known, SDSS J1030+0524 at z=6.28 which was recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We confirm the presence of a complete Gunn-Peterson trough caused by neutral hydr ogen in the intergalactic medium. There is no detectable flux over the wavelength range from 8450 to 8710 A. We set an improved limit on the drop of the flux level blueward of the Ly alpha line: a factor of > 200. Below 8450 A the spectrum shows a rise in flux, with a large fraction (> 60 %) of the total emission produced by few narrow features of transmitted flux. We discuss the obvious proximity effect around this quasar, with the presence of transmitted flux with many absorption features in a region of about 23h^{-1} comoving Mpc. If assuming the surrounding medium were completely neutral, the size of this region would imply a quasar lifetime of ~1.3x10^7 years. We also present near-IR spectroscopy of both SDSS J1030+0524 and of SDSS J1306+05, the second most distant quasar known at redshift 6.0. We combine measurements of the CIV line and limits on the HeII emission with the NV line measurements from the optical spectra to derive line ratios, and by implication the abundances of these early quasar environments. The results are indistinguishable from those of lower redshift quasars and indicate little or no evolution in the abundances from z ~ 6 to z ~ 2. The line ratios suggest supersolar metallicities, implying that the first stars around the quasars must have formed at least a few hundreds of Myrs prior to the observation, i.e. at redshift higher than 8.

Machine learning techniques, specifically the k-nearest neighbour algorithm applied to optical band colours, have had some success in predicting photometric redshifts of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs): Although the mean of differences between the spect roscopic and photometric redshifts is close to zero, the distribution of these differences remains wide and distinctly non-Gaussian. As per our previous empirical estimate of photometric redshifts, we find that the predictions can be significantly improved by adding colours from other wavebands, namely the near-infrared and ultraviolet. Self-testing this, by using half of the 33 643 strong QSO sample to train the algorithm, results in a significantly narrower spread for the remaining half of the sample. Using the whole QSO sample to train the algorithm, the same set of magnitudes return a similar spread for a sample of radio sources (quasars). Although the matching coincidence is relatively low (739 of the 3663 sources having photometry in the relevant bands), this is still significantly larger than from the empirical method (2%) and thus may provide a method with which to obtain redshifts for the vast number of continuum radio sources expected to be detected with the next generation of large radio telescopes.
The local determination of the Hubble Constant sits at a crossroad. Current estimates of the local expansion rate of the Universe differ by about 1.7-sigma, derived from the Cepheid and TRGB based calibrations, applied to type Ia supernovae. To help elucidate possible sources of systematic error causing the tension, we show in this study the recently developed distance indicator, the J-region Asymptotic Giant Branch (JAGB) method (arXiv:2005.10792), can serve as an independent cross-check and comparison with other local distance indicators. Furthermore, we make the case that the JAGB method has substantial potential as an independent, precise and accurate calibrator of type Ia supernovae for the determination of H0. Using the Local Group galaxy, WLM we present distance comparisons between the JAGB method, a TRGB measurement at near-infrared (JHK) wavelengths, a TRGB measurement in the optical I band, and a multi-wavelength Cepheid period-luminosity relation determination. We find: $mu_0$ (JAGB) = 24.97 +/- 0.02 (stat) +/- 0.04 (sys) mag, $mu_0$ (TRGB NIR) = 24.98 +/- 0.04 stat) +/- 0.07 (sys) mag, $mu_0$ (TRGB F814W) = 24.93 +/- 0.02 (stat) +/- 0.06 (sys) mag, $mu_0$ (Cepheids) = 24.98 +/- 0.03 (stat) +/- 0.04 (sys) mag. All four methods are in good agreement, confirming the local self-consistency of the four distance scales at the 3% level, and adding confidence that the JAGB method is as accurate and as precise a distance indicator as either of the other three astrophysically-based methods.

As part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) will improve measurements of the cosmological distance scale by applying the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) method to quasar samples. eBOSS wil l adopt two approaches to target quasars over 7500 sq. deg. First, a CORE quasar sample will combine optical selection in ugriz using a likelihood-based routine called XDQSOz, with a mid-IR-optical color-cut. eBOSS CORE selection (to g < 22 OR r < 22) should return ~ 70 quasars per sq. deg. at redshifts 0.9 < z < 2.2 and ~7 z > 2.1 quasars per sq. deg. Second, a selection based on variability in multi-epoch imaging from the Palomar Transient Factory should recover an additional ~3-4 z > 2.1 quasars per sq. deg. to g < 22.5. A linear model of how imaging systematics affect target density recovers the angular distribution of eBOSS CORE quasars over 96.7% (76.7%) of the SDSS North (South) Galactic Cap area. The eBOSS CORE quasar sample should thus be sufficiently dense and homogeneous over 0.9 < z < 2.2 to yield the first few-percent-level BAO constraint near z~1.5. eBOSS quasars at z > 2.1 will be used to improve BAO measurements in the Lyman-alpha Forest. Beyond its key cosmological goals, eBOSS should be the next-generation quasar survey, comprising > 500,000 new quasars and > 500,000 uniformly selected spectroscopically confirmed 0.9 < z < 2.2 quasars. At the conclusion of eBOSS, the SDSS will have provided unique spectra of over 800,000 quasars.
