We investigate the nonlinear response of photonic crystal waveguides with suppressed two-photon absorption. A moderate decrease of the group velocity (~ c/6 to c/15, a factor of 2.5) results in a dramatic (30x) enhancement of three-photon absorption well beyond the expected scaling, proportional to 1/(vg)^3. This non-trivial scaling of the effective nonlinear coefficients results from pulse compression, which further enhances the optical field beyond that of purely slow-group velocity interactions. These observations are enabled in mm-long slow-light photonic crystal waveguides owing to the strong anomalous group-velocity dispersion and positive chirp. Our numerical physical model matches measurements remarkably.

We prove Anderson localization in a disordered photonic crystal waveguide by measuring the ensemble-averaged localization length which is controlled by the dispersion of the photonic crystal waveguide. In such structures, the localization length show s a 10-fold variation between the fast- and the slow-light regime and, in the latter case, it becomes shorter than the sample length thus giving rise to strongly confined modes. The dispersive behavior of the localization length demonstrates the close relation between Anderson localization and the photon density of states in disordered photonic crystals, which opens a promising route to controlling and exploiting Anderson localization for efficient light confinement.
We report enhanced optomechanical coupling by embedding a nano-mechanical beam resonator within an optical race-track resonator. Precise control of the mechanical resonator is achieved by clamping the beam between two low-loss photonic crystal wavegu ide couplers. The low insertion loss and the rigid mechanical support provided by the couplers yield both high mechanical and optical Q-factors for improved signal quality.
We demonstrate enhanced second harmonic generation in a gallium phosphide photonic crystal waveguide with a measured external conversion efficiency of 5$times10^{-7}$/W. Our results are promising for frequency conversion of on-chip integrated emitter s having broad spectra or large inhomogeneous broadening, as well as for frequency conversion of ultrashort pulses.

We demonstrate soliton-effect pulse compression in mm-long photonic crystal waveguides resulting from strong anomalous dispersion and self-phase modulation. Compression from 3ps to 580fs, at low pulse energies(~10pJ), is measured via autocorrelation.
Second-order nonlinear effects, such as second-harmonic generation, can be strongly enhanced in nanofabricated photonic materials when both fundamental and harmonic frequencies are spatially and temporally confined. Practically designing low-volume a nd doubly resonant nanoresonators in conventional semiconductor compounds is challenging owing to their intrinsic refractive index dispersion. In this work we review a recently developed strategy to design doubly resonant nanocavities with low mode volume and large quality factor by localized defects in a photonic crystal structure. We build on this approach by applying an evolutionary optimisation algorithm in connection with Maxwell equations solvers, showing that the proposed design recipe can be applied to any material platform. We explicitly calculate the second-harmonic generation efficiency for doubly resonant photonic crystal cavity designs in typical III-V semiconductor materials, such as GaN and AlGaAs, targeting a fundamental harmonic at telecom wavelengths, and fully accounting for the tensor nature of the respective nonlinear susceptibilities. These results may stimulate the realisation of small footprint photonic nanostructures in leading semiconductor material platforms to achieve unprecedented nonlinear efficiencies.
