Hydrodynamic slippage plays a crucial role in the flow dynamics of thin polymer films, as recently shown by the analysis of the profiles of liquid fronts. For long-chained polymer films it was reported that a deviation from a symmetric profile is a result of viscoelastic effects. In this Letter, however, evidence is given that merely a slip boundary condition at the solid/liquid interface can lead to an asymmetric profile. Dewetting experiments of entangled polymer melts on diverse substrates allow a direct comparison of rim morphologies. Variation of molecular weight Mw clearly reveals that slippage increases dramatically above a certain Mw and governs the shape of the rim. The results are in accordance with the theoretical description by de Gennes.

We report simulation results on melts of entangled linear polymers confined in a free-standing thin film. We study how the geometric constraints imposed by the confinement alter the entanglement state of the system compared to the equivalent bulk sys tem using various observables. We find that the confinement compresses the chain conformation uniaxially, decreasing the volume pervaded by the chain, which in turn reduces the number of the accessible inter-chain contact that could lead to entanglements. This local and non-uniform effect depends on the position of the chain within the film. We also test a recently presented theory that predicts how the number of entanglements decreases with geometrical confinement.
We study the entanglement dynamics for two independent superconducting qubits each affected by a bistable impurity generating random telegraph noise (RTN) at pure dephasing. The relevant parameter is the ratio $g$ between qubit-RTN coupling strength and RTN switching rate, that captures the physics of the crossover between Markovian and non-Markovian features of the dynamics. For identical qubit-RTN subsystems, a threshold value $g_mathrm{th}$ of the crossover parameter separates exponential decay and onset of revivals; different qualitative behaviors also show up by changing the initial conditions of the RTN. We moreover show that, for different qubit-RTN subsystems, when both qubits are very strongly coupled to the RTN an increase in entanglement revival amplitude may occur during the dynamics.

We examine the applicability of various model profiles for the liquid/vapor interface by X-ray reflectivities on water and ethanol and their mixtures at room temperature. Analysis of the X-ray reflecivities using various density profiles shows an err or-function like profile is the most adequate within experimental error. Our finding, together with recent observations from simulation studies on liquid surfaces, strongly suggest that the capillary-wave dynamics shapes the interfacial density profile in terms of the error function.
The acoustic properties of liquid oxygen have been studied up to 90 T by means of the ultrasound pulse-echo technique. A monotonic decrease of the sound velocity and an asymptotic increase of the acoustic attenuation are observed by applying magnetic fields. An unusually large acoustic attenuation, that becomes 20 times as large as the zero-field value, cannot be explained by the classical theory. These results indicate strong fluctuations of antiferromagnetically coupled local structures. We point out that the observed fluctuations are a precursor of a liquid-liquid transition, from a low-susceptibility to a high-susceptibility liquid, which is characterized by a local-structure rearrangement.

We study theoretically the instabilities induced by a linearly polarized ordinary light wave incident at a small oblique angle on a thin layer of homeotropically oriented nematic liquid crystal with special emphasis on the dye-doped case. The spatial ly periodic Hopf bifurcation that occurs as the secondary instability after the stationary Freedericksz transition is analyzed.
