High resolution low frequency Raman scattering measurements from embedded AgAu nanoparticles unveil efficient scattering by harmonics of both the quadrupolar and the spherical modes. Comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations that account for both the embedding medium and the resonant Raman process enables a very complete description of the observed multiple components in terms of harmonics of both the quadrupolar and spherical modes, with a dominating Raman response from the former ones. It is found that only selected harmonics of the quadrupolar mode contribute significantly to the Raman spectra in agreement with earlier theoretical predictions.

We study the topological edge plasmon modes between two diatomic chains of identical plasmonic nanoparticles. Zak phase for longitudinal plasmon modes in each chain is calculated analytically by solutions of macroscopic Maxwells equations for particl es in quasi-static dipole approximation. This approximation provides a direct analogy with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model such that the eigenvalue is mapped to the frequency dependent inverse-polarizability of the nanoparticles. The edge state frequency is found to be the same as the single-particle resonance frequency, which is insensitive to the separation distances within a unit cell. Finally, full electrodynamic simulations with realistic parameters suggest that the edge plasmon mode can be realized through near-field optical spectroscopy.

Semiconductor doped glasses had been used by the research and engineering communities as color filters or saturable absorbers well before it was realized that their optical properties were defined by tiny specs of semiconductor matter known presently as quantum dots (QDs). Nowadays, the preferred type of QD samples are colloidal particles; however, there is still a number of applications that would benefit from the availability of high-quality glass-based QD samples. These applications include fiber optics, optically pumped lasers and amplifiers, and luminescent solar concentrators. Here we conduct optical studies of a new type of all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs fabricated directly in glasses by high-temperature precipitation. These samples are scattering free and exhibit excellent waveguiding properties. However, the presently existing problem is their low room-temperature emission quantum yields (QY) of only 1-2%. Here we investigate the reasons underlying the limited QY by conducting transient photoluminescence (PL) and absorption measurements across a range of temperatures from 20-300 K. We observe that the low-temperature PL QY of these samples can be as high as ~25%. However, it quickly drops with increasing temperature. Interestingly, experimental observations cannot be explained in terms of a thermally activated nonradiative rate but rather suggest the existence of two QD sub-ensembles of emissive and completely nonemissive particles. The temperature-induced variation in the PL efficiency is likely due to a structural transformation of the QD surfaces or interior leading to formation of trapping sites or nonemissive phases resulting in conversion of emissive QDs into nonemissive. Thus, future efforts on improving emissivity of glass-based perovskite QD samples might focus on approaches for extending the range of stability of the low-temperature up to room temperature.
In this letter, we propose that the narrowband photodetection can be realized in the skin layer of semiconductors with the spatially separated photo-excited carriers from the nanoscale heterolattice electronic transitions (NanoHLETs). The NanoHLET ph otodetection is demonstrated by measuring the photoconductive responses of the $sim$ 1 $mu$m thick films of TiO$_{2}$ glass embedded with rutile and anatase TiO$_{2}$ nanocrystals. As containing only rutile nanocrystals, the TiO$_{2}$ glass film presents the responsivity curve with only one sharp peak centered at 423.0 nm with a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 13.7 nm. This NanoHLET mechanism may open a new way in making ultra-small narrow-band photodetectors matching the current nanoscale electronic technology.
Magnetic measurements have been performed on 40-nm sphere-like Fe3O4 nanoparticles using a Quantum Design vibrating sample magnetometer. Coating Fe3O4 nanoparticles with SiO2 effectively eliminates magnetic interparticle interactions so that the coer cive field HC in the hightemperature range between 300 K and the Curie temperature (855 K) can be well fitted by an expression for noninteracting randomly oriented single-domain particles. From the fitting parameters, the effective anisotropy constant K is found to be (1.68 pm 0.17) times 105 erg/cm3, which is slightly larger than the bulk magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant of 1.35 times 105 erg/cm3. Moreover, the inferred mean particle diameter from the fitting parameters is in quantitative agreement with that determined from transmission electron microscope. Such a quantitative agreement between data and theory suggests that the assemble of our SiO2-coated sphere-like Fe3O4 nanopartles represents a good system of noninteracting randomly-oriented single-domain particles.
Self-organized monocrystalline Au nanoparticles with potential applications in plasmonics are grown in a SrTiO$_3$ matrix by a novel two-step deposition process. The crystalline preferred orientation of these Au nanoparticles is investigated by synch rotron hard x-ray diffraction. Nanoparticles preferentially align with the (111) direction along the substrate normal (001), whereas two in-plane orientations are found with $[110]_{SrTiO_3} : || : [110]_{Au}$ and $[100]_{SrTiO_3} : || : [110]_{Au}$. Additionally, a smaller diffraction signal from nanoparticles with the (001) direction parallel to the substrate normal (001) is observed; once again, two in-plane orientations are found, with $[100]_{SrTiO_3} : || : [100]_{Au}$ and $[100]_{SrTiO_3} : || : [110]_{Au}$. The populations of the two in-plane orientations are found to depend on the thickness of the gold film deposited in the first step of the growth.
