In this letter, we propose that the narrowband photodetection can be realized in the skin layer of semiconductors with the spatially separated photo-excited carriers from the nanoscale heterolattice electronic transitions (NanoHLETs). The NanoHLET photodetection is demonstrated by measuring the photoconductive responses of the $sim$ 1 $mu$m thick films of TiO$_{2}$ glass embedded with rutile and anatase TiO$_{2}$ nanocrystals. As containing only rutile nanocrystals, the TiO$_{2}$ glass film presents the responsivity curve with only one sharp peak centered at 423.0 nm with a full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 13.7 nm. This NanoHLET mechanism may open a new way in making ultra-small narrow-band photodetectors matching the current nanoscale electronic technology.

We have used angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the band structure of ReS$_2$, a transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductor with a distorted 1T crystal structure. We find a large number of narrow valence bands, which we attri bute to the combined influence of the structural distortion and spin-orbit coupling. We further image how this leads to a strong in-plane anisotropy of the electronic structure, with quasi-one-dimensional bands reflecting predominant hopping along zig-zag Re chains. We find that this does not persist up to the top of the valence band, where a more three-dimensional character is recovered with the fundamental band gap located away from the Brillouin zone centre along $k_z$. These experiments are in good agreement with our density-functional theory calculations, shedding new light on the bulk electronic structure of ReS$_2$, and how it can be expected to evolve when thinned to a single layer.
Here we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to reveal the roles of the narrow electronic band in two 1$T$-TaS$_2$ related materials (bulk 1$T$-TaS$_2$ and 4$H_{rm b}$-TaS$_2$). 4$H_{rm b}$-TaS$_2$ is a superconducting c ompound with alternating 1$T$-TaS$_2$ and 1$H$-TaS$_2$ layers, where the 1$H$-TaS$_2$ layer has weak charge density wave (CDW) pattern and reduces the CDW coupling between the adjacent 1$T$-TaS$_2$ layers. In the 1$T$-TaS$_2$ layer of 4$H_{rm b}$-TaS$_2$, we observe a narrow electronic band located near Fermi level, and its spatial distribution is consistent with the tight-binding calculations for two-dimensional 1$T$-TaS$_2$ layers. The weak electronic hybridization between the 1$T$-TaS$_2$ and 1$H$-TaS$_2$ layers in 4$H_{rm b}$-TaS$_2$ shifts the narrow electronic band to be slightly above the Fermi level, which suppresses the electronic correlation induced band splitting. In contrast, in bulk 1$T$-TaS$_2$, there is an interlayer CDW coupling induced insulating gap. In comparison with the spatial distributions of the electronic states in bulk 1$T$-TaS$_2$ and 4$H_{rm b}$-TaS$_2$, the insulating gap in bulk 1$T$-TaS$_2$ results from the formation of a bonding band and an antibonding band due to the overlap of the narrow electronic bands in the dimerized 1$T$-TaS$_2$ layers.
The purpose of this work is to calculate the vibrational modes of an elastically anisotropic sphere embedded in an isotropic matrix. This has important application to understanding the spectra of low-frequency Raman scattering from nanoparticles embe dded in a glass matrix. First some low frequency vibrational modes of a free cubically elastic sphere are found to be nearly independent of one combination of elastic constants. This is then exploited to obtain an isotropic approximation for these modes which enables to take into account the surrounding isotropic matrix. This method is then used to quantatively explain recent spectra of gold and copper nanocrystals in glasses.

The hyperfine structure of the interstitial muonium (Mu) center in rutile (TiO$_2$, weakly $n$-type) has been identified by means of muon spin rotation technique. The angle-resolved hyperfine parameter has a tetragonal anisotropy within the $ab$ plan e and axial anisotropy along the $c$ axis, strongly suggesting that Mu simulates the known local structure of interstitial hydrogen (H) located at an off-center position within a channel along $c$ axis, and the electron wave function bound to Mu is highly delocalized (~1.5 nm along $c$ axis, ~0.8 nm for $a$ axis). The ionization energy of Mu ($rightarrow mu^+ + e^-$) due to thermal activation is deduced to be 1.2(4) meV, as is directly inferred from the disappearance of Mu signal above ~8 K. These observations suggest that electronic level associated with Mu (as well as H) is situated near the bottom of the conduction band, serving as a shallow donor state in rutile.
We investigate the photocatalytic performance of nanocomposites prepared in a one-step process by liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite in the presence of TiO$_2$ nanoparticles (NPs) at atmospheric pressure and in water, without heating or adding any surfactant, and starting from low-cost commercial reagents. The nanocomposites show enhanced photocatalytic activity, degrading up to 40$%$ more pollutants with respect to the starting TiO$_2$-NPs. In order to understand the photo-physical mechanisms underlying this enhancement, we investigate the photo-generation of reactive species (trapped holes and electrons) by ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. We observe an electron transfer process from TiO$_2$ to the graphite flakes within the first picoseconds of the relaxation dynamics, which causes the decrease of the charge recombination rate, and increases the efficiency of the reactive species photo-production.
