Semiconductor doped glasses had been used by the research and engineering communities as color filters or saturable absorbers well before it was realized that their optical properties were defined by tiny specs of semiconductor matter known presently as quantum dots (QDs). Nowadays, the preferred type of QD samples are colloidal particles; however, there is still a number of applications that would benefit from the availability of high-quality glass-based QD samples. These applications include fiber optics, optically pumped lasers and amplifiers, and luminescent solar concentrators. Here we conduct optical studies of a new type of all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite QDs fabricated directly in glasses by high-temperature precipitation. These samples are scattering free and exhibit excellent waveguiding properties. However, the presently existing problem is their low room-temperature emission quantum yields (QY) of only 1-2%. Here we investigate the reasons underlying the limited QY by conducting transient photoluminescence (PL) and absorption measurements across a range of temperatures from 20-300 K. We observe that the low-temperature PL QY of these samples can be as high as ~25%. However, it quickly drops with increasing temperature. Interestingly, experimental observations cannot be explained in terms of a thermally activated nonradiative rate but rather suggest the existence of two QD sub-ensembles of emissive and completely nonemissive particles. The temperature-induced variation in the PL efficiency is likely due to a structural transformation of the QD surfaces or interior leading to formation of trapping sites or nonemissive phases resulting in conversion of emissive QDs into nonemissive. Thus, future efforts on improving emissivity of glass-based perovskite QD samples might focus on approaches for extending the range of stability of the low-temperature up to room temperature.

We examine energy spectra of Si quantum dots embedded into Si_{0.75}Ge_{0.25} buffers using atomistic numerical calculations for dimensions relevant to qubit implementations. The valley degeneracy of the lowest orbital state is lifted and valley spli tting fluctuates with monolayer frequency as a function of the dot thickness. For dot thicknesses <6 nm valley splitting is found to be >150 ueV. Using the unique advantage of atomistic calculations we analyze the effect of buffer disorder on valley splitting. Disorder in the buffer leads to the suppression of valley splitting by a factor of 2.5, the splitting fluctuates with ~20 ueV for different disorder realizations. Through these simulations we can guide future experiments into regions of low device-to-device fluctuations.
We define two laterally gated small quantum dots (~ 15 electrons) in an Aharonov-Bohm geometry in which the coupling between the two dots can be broadly changed. For weakly coupled quantum dots we find Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. In an intermediate c oupling regime we concentrate on the molecular states of the double dot and extract the magnetic field dependence of the coherent coupling.
It is highly desirable to search for promising two-dimensional (2D) monolayer materials for deep insight of 2D materials and applications. We use first-principles method to investigate tetragonal perovskite oxide monolayers as 2D materials. We find f our stable 2D monolayer materials from SrTiO$_3$, LaAlO$_3$, KTaO$_3$, and BaFeO$_3$, denoting them as STO-ML, LAO-ML, KTO-ML, and BFO-ML. Our further study shows that through overcoming dangling bonds the first three monolayers are 2D wide-gap semiconducotors, and BFO-ML is a 2D isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnetic metal. There is a large electrostatic potential energy difference between the two sides, reflecting a large out-of-plane dipole, in each of the monolayers. These make a series of 2D monolayer materials, and should be useful in novel electronic devices considering emerging phenomena in perovskite oxide heterostructures.
A description of spin Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity signals for single- and multi-layer ensembles of singly charged quantum dots (QDs) is developed. The microscopic theory considers both the single pump-pulse excitation and the effe ct of a train of such pulses, which in the case of long resident-electron spin coherence time leads to a stationary distribution of the electron spin polarization. The calculations performed for single-color and two-color pump-probe setups show that the three experimental techniques: Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity measurements provide complementary information about an inhomogeneous ensemble of QDs. The microscopic theory developed for a three-dimensional ensemble of QDs is shown to agree with the phenomenological description of these effects. The typical time-dependent traces of pump-probe Faraday rotation, Kerr rotation and ellipticity signals are calculated for various experimental conditions.
In this work we theoretically study properties of electric current driven by a temperature gradient through a quantum dot/molecule coupled to the source and drain charge reservoirs. We analyze the effect of Coulomb interactions between electrons on t he dot/molecule and of thermal environment on the thermocurrent. The environment is simulated by two thermal baths associated with the reservoirs and kept at different temperatures. The scattering matrix formalism is employed to compute electron transmission through the system. This approach is further developed and combined with nonequilibrium Greens functions formalism, so that scattering probabilities are expressed in terms of relevant energies including the thermal energy, strengths of coupling between the dot/molecule and charge reservoirs and characteristic energies of electron-phonon interactions. It is shown that one may bring the considered system into regime favorable for heat-to-electric energy conversion by varying the applied bias and gate voltages.
