We have investigated polyyne and cumulene prototypes based on the density-functional theory. Our independent-particle spectra show that the various carbynes can be distinguished by optical properties comparing the low-energy spectral structure as well as using very general considerations. The latter conclusion is supported by results based on the random-phase approximation including local-field effects.

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of metal (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) mono- and co-doped anatase TiO$_{2}$ nanotubes are investigated, in order to elucidate their potential for photocatalytic applications. It is found that Si doped TiO$_{2 }$ nanotubes are more stable than those doped with Ge, Sn, or Pb. All dopants lower the band gap, except the (Ge, Sn) co-doped structure, the decrease depending on the concentration and the type of dopant. Correspondingly, a redshift in the optical properties for all kinds of dopings is obtained. Even though a Pb mono- and co-doped TiO$_{2}$ nanotube has the lowest band gap, these systems are not suitable for water splitting, due to the location of the conduction band edges, in contrast to Si, Ge, and Sn mono-doped TiO$_{2}$ nanotubes. On the other hand, co-doping of TiO$_{2}$ does not improve its photocatalytic properties. Our findings are consistent with recent experiments which show an enhancement of light absorption for Si and Sn doped TiO$_{2}$ nanotubes.
This work reports on the elastic and electronic properties of the newly discovered superconductor Th2NiC2 (A .Machado, et al., Supercond. Sci. Technol. 25 (2012) 045010) as obtained within ab initio calculations. We found that Th2NiC2 is mechanically stable and it will behave as a ductile material exhibiting enhanced elastic anisotropy in shear and a rather low hardness Our data reveal that for Th2NiC2 the Fermi level is located in a deep DOS minimum and the experimentally observed increase in TC in the sequence Th2NiC2 -> Th1.8Sc0.2NiC2 may be explained by the growth of N(EF). We also speculate that (i) an increase in the hole concentration will promote exchange splitting of Ni 3d bands, therefore the hole-doped Th2NiC2 should have a certain concentration border, where a phase transition from the superconducting to the magnetic state will be expected, and (ii) an increase in N(EF) (and, probably, in TC) for Th2NiC2-based materials may be also achieved by an alternative way: by electron doping - for example, by partial substitution of V for Th or Cu for Ni, as well as by partial substitution of N for C with the formation of Th-Ni carbonitrides like Th2NiC2-xNx.
We present results of a study of small stoichiometric $Cd_{n}Te_{n}$ ($1{leq}n{leq}6$) clusters and few medium sized non-stoichiometric $Cd_{m}Te_{n}$ [($m,n= 13, 16, 19$); ($m{ eq}n$)] clusters using the Density Functional formalism and projector au gmented wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. Structural properties {it viz.} geometry, bond length, symmetry and electronic properties like HOMO-LUMO gap, binding energy, ionization potential and nature of bonding {it etc.} have been analyzed. Medium sized non-stoichiometric clusters were considered as fragments of the bulk with T{$_{d}$} symmetry. It was observed that upon relaxation, the symmetry changes for the Cd rich clusters whereas the Te rich clusters retain their symmetry. The Cd rich clusters develop a HOMO-LUMO gap due to relaxation whereas there is no change in the HOMO-LUMO gap of the Te rich clusters. Thus, the symmetry of a cluster seems to be an important factor in determining the HOMO-LUMO gap.
Recently, the novel system of linear carbon chains inside of double-walled carbon nanotubes has extended the length of $sp^1$ hybridized carbon chains from 44 to thousands of atoms [L. Shi et al., Nat. Mater. 15, 634 (2016)]. The optoelectronic prope rties of these ultra-long chains are poorly described by current theoretical models, which are based on short chain experimental data and assume a constant environment. As such, a physical understanding of the system in terms of charge transfer and van der Waals interactions is widely missing. We provide a reference for the intrinsic Raman frequency of polyynes in vacuo and explicitly describe the interactions between polyynes and carbon nanotubes. We find that van der Waals interactions strongly shift the Raman frequency, which has been neither expected nor addressed before. As a consequence of charge transfer from the tube to the chain, the Raman response of long chains is qualitatively different from the known phonon dispersion of polymers close to the $Gamma$-point. Based on these findings we show how to correctly interpret the Raman data, considering the nanotubes properties. This is essential for its use as an analytical tool to optimize the growth process for future applications.
Electronic structure of FeGa3 has been studied using experiments and ab-initio calculations. Magnetization measurements show that FeGa3 is inherently diamagnetic in nature. Our studies indicate that the previously reported magnetic moment on the Fe a toms in FeGa3 is not an intrinsic property of FeGa3, but is primarily due to the presence of disorder, defects, grain boundaries etc that break the symmetry about the Fe dimers. Analysis of the results obtained from magnetic measurements, photoelectron spectroscopy, Fe K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations clearly indicates that, the effects of on-site Coulomb repulsion between the Fe 3d electrons do not play any role in determining the electronic and magnetic properties of FeGa3. Detailed analysis of results of single crystal and poycrystalline FeGa3, helps to resolve the discrepancy in the electronic and magnetic properties in FeGa3 existing in the literature, consistently.
