We study the properties of a tunable nonlinear metamaterial operating at microwave frequencies. We fabricate the nonlinear metamaterial composed of double split-ring resonators and wires where a varactor diode is introduced into each resonator so that the magnetic resonance can be tuned dynamically by varying the input power. We show that at higher powers the transmission of the metamaterial becomes power dependent, and we demonstrate experimentally power-dependent transmission properties and selective generation of higher harmonics.

Optical vortices are currently one of the most intensively studied topics in optics. These light beams, which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), have been successfully utilized in the visible and infrared in a wide variety of applications. Moving to shorter wavelengths may open up completely new research directions in the areas of optical physics and material characterization. Here, we report on the generation of extreme-ultraviolet optical vortices with femtosecond duration carrying a controllable amount of OAM. From a basic physics viewpoint, our results help to resolve key questions such as the conservation of angular momentum in highly-nonlinear light-matter interactions, and the disentanglement and independent control of the intrinsic and extrinsic components of the photons angular momentum at short-wavelengths. The methods developed here will allow testing some of the recently proposed concepts such as OAM-induced dichroism, magnetic switching in organic molecules, and violation of dipolar selection rules in atoms.
We demonstrate supermode-based second harmonic generation in an integrated nonlinear interferometer made of linear and nonlinear directional couplers. We use a fully-fibered pump shaper to demonstrate second harmonic generation pumped by the symmetri c or anti- symmetric fundamental spatial modes. The selection of the pumping mode and thus of a specific SHG spectral profile is achieved through the selection of the fundamental wavelength and via a robust phase setting scheme. We use two methods: either post-selecting or actively setting the pumping mode. Such a modal phase matching paves the way for classical and quantum applications of coupled nonlinear photonic circuits, where multimode excitation, encoding and detection are a route for multiplexing and scaling up light-processing.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a coherent nonlinear phenomenon that plays an important role in laser color conversion. Lithium niobate (LN), which features both a large band gap and outstanding second-order nonlinearities, acts as an important o ptical material for nonlinear frequency conversion covering a wide spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. Here we experimentally demonstrate LN metasurfaces with controllable SHG properties. Distinct enhancements for the SHG efficiency are observed at Mie-resonances. And by changing the geometric parameters thus the resonances of the metasurfaces, we manage to selectively boost the SHG efficiency at different wavelengths. Our results would pave a way for developing with high flexibility the novel compact nonlinear light sources for applications, such as biosensing and optical communications.
We theoretically investigate second harmonic generation that originates from the nonlinear, magnetic Lorentz force term from single and multiple apertures carved on thick, opaque metal substrates. The linear transmission properties of apertures on me tal substrates have been previously studied in the context of the extraordinary transmission of light. The transmission process is driven by a number of physical mechanisms, whose characteristics and relative importance depend on the thickness of the metallic substrate, slit size, and slit separation. In this work we show that a combination of cavity effects and surface plasmon generation gives rise to enhanced second harmonic generation in the regime of extraordinary transmittance of the pump field. We have studied both forward and backward second harmonic generation conversion efficiencies as functions of the geometrical parameters, and how they relate to pump transmission efficiency. The resonance phenomenon is evident in the generated second harmonic signal, as conversion efficiency depends on the duration of incident pump pulse, and hence its bandwidth. Our results show that the excitation of tightly confined modes as well as the combination of enhanced transmission and nonlinear processes can lead to several potential new applications such as photo-lithography, scanning microscopy, and high-density optical data storage devices.
Tunable coherent light sources operating in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) region in 100-200-nm (6-12 eV) wavelength range have important spectroscopic applications in many research fields, including time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectrosc opy (ARPES). Recent advances in laser technology have enabled the upconversion of visible femtosecond lasers to the vacuum and extreme ultraviolet regions. However, the complexity of their experimental setups and the scarcity of bulk nonlinear crystals for VUV generation have hampered its widespread use. Here, we propose the use of a free-standing dielectric nanomembranes as a simple and practical method for tunable VUV generation. We demonstrate that third harmonic VUV light is generated with sufficient intensity for spectroscopic applications from commercially available SiO2 nanomemebranes of submicron thicknesses under excitation with visible femtosecond laser pulses. The submicron thickness of the nanomembranes is optimal for maximize the VUV generation efficiency and prevents self-phase modulation and spectral broadening of the fundamental beam. The observed VUV photons are up to 10^7 photons per pulse at 157 nm with 1-kHz repetition rate, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 10^-6. Moreover, the central VUV wavelength can be tuned in 146-190-nm wavelength range by changing the fundamental wavelength. We also explore material and thickness dependence with experiments and calculations. The presented results suggest that dielectric nanomembranes can be used as a practical nonlinear media for VUV spectroscopic applications.
