In the setting of high-dimensional linear models with Gaussian noise, we investigate the possibility of confidence statements connected to model selection. Although there exist numerous procedures for adaptive point estimation, the construction of adaptive confidence regions is severely limited (cf. Li, 1989). The present paper sheds new light on this gap. We develop exact and adaptive confidence sets for the best approximating model in terms of risk. One of our constructions is based on a multiscale procedure and a particular coupling argument. Utilizing exponential inequalities for noncentral chi-squared distributions, we show that the risk and quadratic loss of all models within our confidence region are uniformly bounded by the minimal risk times a factor close to one.

We consider nonparametric inference of finite dimensional, potentially non-pathwise differentiable target parameters. In a nonparametric model, some examples of such parameters that are always non pathwise differentiable target parameters include pro bability density functions at a point, or regression functions at a point. In causal inference, under appropriate causal assumptions, mean counterfactual outcomes can be pathwise differentiable or not, depending on the degree at which the positivity assumption holds. In this paper, given a potentially non-pathwise differentiable target parameter, we introduce a family of approximating parameters, that are pathwise differentiable. This family is indexed by a scalar. In kernel regression or density estimation for instance, a natural choice for such a family is obtained by kernel smoothing and is indexed by the smoothing level. For the counterfactual mean outcome, a possible approximating family is obtained through truncation of the propensity score, and the truncation level then plays the role of the index. We propose a method to data-adaptively select the index in the family, so as to optimize mean squared error. We prove an asymptotic normality result, which allows us to derive confidence intervals. Under some conditions, our estimator achieves an optimal mean squared error convergence rate. Confidence intervals are data-adaptive and have almost optimal width. A simulation study demonstrates the practical performance of our estimators for the inference of a causal dose-response curve at a given treatment dose.
We compare the following two sources of poor coverage of post-model-selection confidence intervals: the preliminary data-based model selection sometimes chooses the wrong model and the data used to choose the model is re-used for the construction of the confidence interval.
We present a new approach for inference about a log-concave distribution: Instead of using the method of maximum likelihood, we propose to incorporate the log-concavity constraint in an appropriate nonparametric confidence set for the cdf $F$. This a pproach has the advantage that it automatically provides a measure of statistical uncertainty and it thus overcomes a marked limitation of the maximum likelihood estimate. In particular, we show how to construct confidence bands for the density that have a finite sample guaranteed confidence level. The nonparametric confidence set for $F$ which we introduce here has attractive computational and statistical properties: It allows to bring modern tools from optimization to bear on this problem via difference of convex programming, and it results in optimal statistical inference. We show that the width of the resulting confidence bands converges at nearly the parametric $n^{-frac{1}{2}}$ rate when the log density is $k$-affine.
We give an overview over the usefulness of the concept of equivariance and invariance in the design of experiments for generalized linear models. In contrast to linear models here pairs of transformations have to be considered which act simultaneousl y on the experimental settings and on the location parameters in the linear component. Given the transformation of the experimental settings the parameter transformations are not unique and may be nonlinear to make further use of the model structure. The general concepts and results are illustrated by models with gamma distributed response. Locally optimal and maximin efficient design are obtained for the common D- and IMSE-criterion.

We consider the problem of constructing Bayesian based confidence sets for linear functionals in the inverse Gaussian white noise model. We work with a scale of Gaussian priors indexed by a regularity hyper-parameter and apply the data-driven (slight ly modified) marginal likelihood empirical Bayes method for the choice of this hyper-parameter. We show by theory and simulations that the credible sets constructed by this method have sub-optimal behaviour in general. However, by assuming self-similarity the credible sets have rate-adaptive size and optimal coverage. As an application of these results we construct $L_{infty}$-credible bands for the true functional parameter with adaptive size and optimal coverage under self-similarity constraint.
