Analysis of the polarization of light from supernovae can reveal the shape and distribution of matter ejected from exploding stars. Here we review the young field of Type Ia supernova spectropolarimetry and critically evaluate, and place in context, the recent work of Wang et al. (2007, Science, 315, 212) in which a suggestive trend is found in data from 17 Type Ia events.

At the 2017 Artificial and Computational Intelligence in Games meeting at Dagstuhl, Julian Togelius asked how to make spaces where every way of filling in the details yielded a good game. This study examines the possibility of enriching search spaces so that they contain very high rates of interesting objects, specifically game elements. While we do not answer the full challenge of finding good games throughout the space, this study highlights a number of potential avenues. These include naturally rich spaces, a simple technique for modifying a representation to search only rich parts of a larger search space, and representations that are highly expressive and so exhibit highly restricted and consequently enriched search spaces.
Question: I have five fingers but I am not alive. What am I? Answer: a glove. Answering such a riddle-style question is a challenging cognitive process, in that it requires complex commonsense reasoning abilities, an understanding of figurative langu age, and counterfactual reasoning skills, which are all important abilities for advanced natural language understanding (NLU). However, there are currently no dedicated datasets aiming to test these abilities. Herein, we present RiddleSense, a new multiple-choice question answering task, which comes with the first large dataset (5.7k examples) for answering riddle-style commonsense questions. We systematically evaluate a wide range of models over the challenge, and point out that there is a large gap between the best-supervised model and human performance -- suggesting intriguing future research in the direction of higher-order commonsense reasoning and linguistic creativity towards building advanced NLU systems.
In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. E 68, 011906 (2003)], Naef and Magnasco suggested that the bright mismatches observed in Affymetrix microarray experiments are caused by the fluorescent molecules used to label RNA target sequences, which would impede ta rget-probe hybridization. Their conclusion is based on the observation of unexpected asymmetries in the affinities obtained by fitting microarray data from publicly available experiments. We point out here that the observed asymmetry is due to the inequivalence of RNA and DNA, and that the reported affinities are consistent with stacking free energies obtained from melting experiments of unlabeled nucleic acids in solution. The conclusion of Naef and Magnasco is therefore based on an unjustified assumption.

In this paper a new supernova catalogue containing data for 5526 extragalactic supernovae that were discovered up to 2010 December 31 is presented. It combines several catalogues that are currently available online in a consistent and traceable way. During the comparison of the catalogues inconsistent entries were identified and resolved where possible. Remaining inconsistencies are marked transparently and can be easily identified. Thus it is possible to select a high-quality sample in a most simple way. Where available, redshift-based distance estimates to the supernovae were replaced by journal-refereed distances. Examples of statistical studies that are now possible with this new catalogue are presented in this paper.
We consider a `brane-world scenario recently introduced by Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati, and subsequently proposed as an alternative to a cosmological constant in explaining the current acceleration of the universe. We show that, contrary to these cl aims, this proposal is already strongly disfavoured by the available Type Ia Supernovae, Cosmic Microwave Background and cluster data.
