We consider a `brane-world scenario recently introduced by Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati, and subsequently proposed as an alternative to a cosmological constant in explaining the current acceleration of the universe. We show that, contrary to these claims, this proposal is already strongly disfavoured by the available Type Ia Supernovae, Cosmic Microwave Background and cluster data.

We discuss supergravity inflation in braneworld cosmology for the class of potentials $V(phi)=alpha phi^nrm{exp}(-beta^m phi^m)$ with $m=1,~2$. These minimal SUGRA models evade the $eta$ problem due to a broken shift symmetry and can easily accommoda te the observational constraints. Models with smaller $n$ are preferred while models with larger $n$ are out of the $2sigma$ region. Remarkably, the field excursions required for $60$ $e$-foldings stay sub-planckian $Deltaphi <1$.
We explore solutions of six dimensional gravity coupled to a non-linear sigma model, in the presence of co-dimension two branes. We investigate the compactifications induced by a spherical scalar manifold and analyze the conditions under which they a re of finite volume and singularity free. We discuss the issue of single-valuedness of the scalar fields and provide some special embedding of the scalar manifold to the internal space which solves this problem. These brane solutions furnish some self-tuning features, however they do not provide a satisfactory explanation of the vanishing of the effective four dimensional cosmological constant. We discuss the properties of this model in relation with the self-tuning example based on a hyperbolic sigma model.
We investigate an effective torsion curvature in a second order formalism underlying a two form world-volume dynamics in a $D_5$-brane. In particular, we consider the two form in presence of a background (open string) metric in a $U(1)$ gauge theory. Interestingly the formalism may be viewed via a non-coincident pair of $(D{bar D})_5$-brane with a global NS two form on an anti brane and a local two form on a brane. The energy-momentum tensor is computed in the six dimensional CFT. It is shown to source a metric fluctuation on a vacuum created pair of $(D{bar D})_4$-brane at a cosmological horizon by the two form quanta in the gauge theory. The emergent gravity scenario is shown to describe a low energy (perturbative) string vacuum in $6D$ with a (non-perturbative) quantum correction by a lower ($p<5$) dimensional $D_p$ brane or an anti brane in the formalism. A closed string exchange between a pair of $(D{bar D})_4$-brane, underlying a closed/open string duality, is argued to describe the Einstein vacuum in a low energy limit. We obtain topological de Sitter and Schwarzschild brane universe in six dimensions. The brane/anti-brane geometries are analyzed to explore some of their characteristic and thermal behaviours in presence of the quantum effects. They reveal an underlying nine dimensional type IIA and IIB superstring theories on $S^1$.
We study gravity on an infinitely thin codimension-2 brane world, with purely conical singularities and in the presence of an induced gravity term on the brane. We show that in this approximation, the energy momentum tensor of the bulk is strongly re lated to the energy momentum tensor of the brane and thus the gravity dynamics on the brane are induced by the bulk content. This is in contrast with the gravity dynamics on a codimension-1 brane. We show how this strong result is relaxed after including a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk.

The motion of a dynamical system on an $n$-dimensional configuration space may be regarded as the lightlike shadow of null geodsics moving in an $(n+2)$ dimensional spacetime known as its Einsenhart-Duval lift. In this paper it is shown that if the c onfiguration space is $n$-dimensional Euclidean space, and in the absence of magnetic type forces, the Eisenhart-Duval lift may be regarded as an $(n+1)$-brane moving in a flat $(n+4)$ -dimensional space with two times. If the Eisenhart-Duval lift is Ricci flat, then the $(n+1)$-brane moves in such a way as to extremise its spacetime volume. A striking example is provided by the motion of $N$ point particles moving in three-dimensional Euclidean space under the influence of their mutual gravitational attraction. Embeddings with curved configuration space metrics and velocity dependent forces are also be constructed. Some of the issues arising from the two times are addressed.
