We present a detailed study of complex dielectric constant and ferroelectric polarization in multiferroic LiCuVO4 as function of temperature and external magnetic field. In zero external magnetic field, spiral spin order with an ab helix and a propagation vector along the crystallographic b direction is established, which induces ferroelectric order with spontaneous polarization parallel to a. The direction of the helix can be reoriented by an external magnetic field and allows switching of the spontaneous polarization. We find a strong dependence of the absolute value of the polarization for different orientations of the spiral plane. Above 7.5 T, LiCuVO4 reveals collinear spin order and remains paraelectric for all field directions. Thus this system is ideally suited to check the symmetry relations for spiral magnets as predicted theoretically. The strong coupling of ferroelectric and magnetic order is documented and the complex (B,T) phase diagram is fully explored.

We consider a pentagon chain described by a Hubbard type of model considered under periodic boundary conditions. The system i) is placed in an external magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the cells, and ii) is in a site selective manner unde r the action of an external electric potential. In these conditions we show in a non-approximated manner that the physical properties of the system can be qualitatively changed. The changes cause first strong modifications of the band structure of the system created by the one-particle part of the Hamiltonian, and second, considerably redraw the emergence domains of ordered phases. We exemplify this by deducing ferromagnetic ground states in the presence of external fields in two different domains of the parameter space.
Frustrated spin-1/2 chains, despite the apparent simplicity, exhibit remarkably rich phase diagram comprising vector-chiral (VC), spin-density-wave (SDW) and multipolar/spin-nematic phases as a function of the magnetic field. Here we report a study o f $beta$-TeVO$_4$, an archetype of such compounds, based on magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements up to 25 T. We find the transition from the helical VC ground state to the SDW state at $sim$3 T for the magnetic field along the $a$ and $c$ crystal axes, and at $sim$9 T for the field along the $b$ axis. The high-field (HF) state, existing above $sim$18 T, i.e., above $sim$1/2 of the saturated magnetization, is an incommensurate magnetically ordered state and not the spin-nematic state, as theoretically predicted for the isotropic frustrated spin-1/2 chain. The HF state is likely driven by sizable interchain interactions and symmetric intrachain anisotropies uncovered in previous studies. Consequently, the potential existence of the spin nematic phase in $beta$-TeVO$_4$ is limited to a narrow field range, i.e., a few tenths of a tesla bellow the saturation of the magnetization, as also found in other frustrated spin-1/2 chain compounds.

The relationship between magnetic order and ferroelectric properties has been investigated for MnWO$_4$ with long-wavelength magnetic structure. Spontaneous electric polarization is observed in an elliptical spiral spin phase. The magnetic-field depe ndence of electric polarization indicates that the noncollinear spin configuration plays a key role for the appearance of ferroelectric phase. An electric polarization flop from the b direction to the a direction has been observed when a magnetic field above 10T is applied along the b axis. This result demonstrates that an electric polarization flop can be induced by a magnetic field in a simple system without rare-earth f-moments.
Under a perfect periodic potential, the electric current density induced by a constant electric field may exhibit nontrivial oscillations, so-called Bloch oscillations, with an amplitude that remains nonzero in the large system size limit. Such oscil lations have been well studied for nearly noninteracting particles and observed in experiments. In this work, we revisit Bloch oscillations in strongly interacting systems. By analyzing the spin-1/2 XXZ chain, which can be mapped to a model of spinless electrons, we demonstrate that the current density at special values of the anisotropy parameter $Delta=-cos(pi/p)$ ($p=3,4,5,cdots$) in the ferromagnetic gapless regime behaves qualitatively the same as in the noninteracting case ($Delta=0$) even in the weak electric field limit. When $Delta$ deviates from these values, the amplitude of the oscillation under a weak electric field is suppressed by a factor of the system size. We estimate the strength of the electric field required to observe such a behavior using the Landau--Zener formula.
The gem-stone dioptase Cu6Si6O18.6H2O has a chiral crystal structure of equilateral triangular helices consisting of Cu-3d spins. It shows an antiferromagnetic order with an easy axis along c at TN = 15.5 K under zero field, and a magnetization jump at HC = 13.5 T when the field is applied along c-axis. By 29Si-NMR measurements, we have revealed that the high-field state is essentially the two sub-lattice structure, and that the component within ab-plane is collinear. The result indicates no apparent match with the geometrical pattern of helical spin chain.
