Thermoreflectance methods by picosecond pulse heating and by nanosecond pulse heating have been developed under the same geometrical configuration as the laser flash method by the National Metrology Institute of JAPAN, AIST. Using these light pulse heating methods, thermal diffusivity of each layer of multilayered thin films and boundary thermal resistance between the layers can be determined from the observed transient temperature curves based on the response function method. The measurement results of various thin films as transparent conductive films used for flat panel displays, hard coating films and multilayered films of the next generation phase-change optical disk will be presented.

The difference in the transmission for left and right circularly polarised light though thin films on substrates in a magnetic field is used to obtain the magnetic circular dichroism of the film. However there are reflections at all the interfaces an d these are also different for the two polarisations and generate the polar Kerr signal. In this paper the contribution to the differences to the total transmission from the transmission across interfaces as well as the differences in absorption in the film and the substrate are calculated. This gives a guide to when it is necessary to evaluate these corrections in order to obtain the real MCD from a measure of the differential transmission due to differential absorption in the film.

Nanostructured Pd-Fe thin films with varied Fe content were prepared by electrodeposition technique from organic electrolytes on Cu and brass substrates. The structure and the magnetic properties of the films were investigated prior to post-depositio n annealing. The structure of the Pd1-xFex thin films with x = 0.14, 0.24, and 0.52 was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as a solid solution of iron in palladium face-centered cubic lattice with the (111) orientation of nanograins relatively to the substrate surface. The films with higher iron concentration, x = 0.74, 0.91, have structure of a solid solution based on the body-centered cubic lattice. The average grain size determined by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the first two alloys is 7-10 nm, and for the latter ones it is about 120 nm. The saturation magnetization of the films has linear dependence on the iron content, but coercivity has non-monotonic dependence on x, i.e. the films with x = 0.68 show highest coercivity. The magnetic anisotropy of the samples is studied by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy.

In this paper, we report the growth of NaxCoO2 thin films by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). It is shown that the concentration of sodium is very sensitive to the substrate temperature and the target-substrate distance due to the evaporation of sodium during the deposition. alpha prime-phase Na0.75CoO2 and gamma- phase Na0.71CoO2 thin films can be obtained with different conditions. Correspondingly, the surface morphology of the films changes from flake-like to particle-like. The temperature dependence of resistivity for the films prepared with the optimal condition shows metallic behavior, consistent with the data of NaxCoO2 single crystals. This work demonstrates that PLD is a promising technique to get high quality NaxCoO2 thin films.
In the search for alternative plasmonic materials SrMoO3 has recently been identified as possessing a number of desirable optical properties. Owing to the requirement for many plasmonic devices to operate at elevated temperatures however, it is essen tial to characterize the degradation of these properties upon heating. Here, SrMoO3 thin films are annealed in air at temperatures ranging from 75 - 500{deg} C. Characterizations by AFM, XRD, and spectroscopic ellipsometry after each anneal identify a loss of metallic behaviour after annealing at 500{deg} C, together with the underlying mechanism. Moreover, it is shown that by annealing the films in nitrogen following deposition, an additional crystalline phase of SrMoO4 is induced at the film surface, which suppresses oxidation at elevated temperatures.
We investigated the structure-property relationship of Co$_2$MnSi Heusler thin films upon the irradiation with He$^+$ ions. The variation of the crystal structure with increasing ion fluence has been probed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and associated with the corresponding changes of the magnetic behavior. A decrease of both the structural order and the moment in saturation is observed. Specifically, we detect a direct transition from a highly $L2_1$-ordered to a fully $A2$-disordered structure type and quantify the evolution of the $A2$ structural contribution as a function of ion fluence. Complementary TEM analysis reveals a spatially-resolved distribution of the $L2_1$ and $A2$ phases showing that the $A2$ disorder starts at the upper part of the films. The structural degradation in turn leads to a decreasing magnetic moment in saturation in response to the increasing fluence.
