We argue that Anton Zeilingers foundational conceptual principle for quantum mechanics according to which an elementary system carries one bit of information is an idealistic principle, which should be replaced by a realistic principle of contextuali ty. Specific properties of quantum systems are a consequence of impossibility to speak about them without reference to the tools of their observation/identification and, consequently, context in which these tools are applied.

Starting from general considerations, some ideas of the philosopher Derek Parfit on consciousness, self-awareness, and reductionism are briefly reviewed and critically examined from the standpoint of physics.

I give a brief review of the search for a proper definition of energy in General Relativity (GR), a far from trivial quest, which was only completed after four and a half decades. The equally (or perhaps more) difficult task of establishing its posit ivity -- it was to take another fifteen plus years -- will then be summarized. Extension to cosmological GR is included. Mention is made of some recent offshoots.

The calculation of the electron g-factor was carried out in 1950 by Karplus and Kroll. Seven years later, Petermann detected and corrected a serious error in the calculation of a Feynman diagram. Although it is hard to believe, neither the original c alculation nor the subsequent correction was ever published. Therefore, the entire prestige of QED and the Standard Model depends on the calculation of a single Feynman diagram (IIc) that has never been published and cannot be independently verified. In this article we begin the search for any published recalculation of this Feynman diagram IIc that allows us to independently validate the theoretical calculation.

Requiring causality on measurements in quantum field theory seems to impose strong conditions on a self-adjoint operator to be really measurable. This may seem limiting and artificial in the operator language of algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT), but is essential for a truly relativistic theory. Recent publications attempt to deal with this issue by including the apparatus into the formalism, connecting AQFT with measurement theory, but other options have been suggested. In this essay, I discuss the causality conditions on self-adjoint operators both in the language of AQFT and in the language of quantum information theory. I then present measurement theory in AQFT, modelling the apparatus as a quantum field with coupling to the measured system restricted to a region of spacetime. I highlight how this approach leads to a causally well behaved theory. Finally, I attempt to formulate the causality conditions on measurements in the Feynman path integral approach, using the concept of decoherent histories. I claim that the path integral approach has problems with causality similar to the operator based approaches and that even here causality is an a posteriori condition.

Why Im not happy with how Relational Quantum Mechanics has addressed the reconstruction of quantum theory, and why you shouldnt be either.
In quantum mechanics, the wave-function only predicts probabilities of measurement outcomes, not individual outcomes. This suggests that it describes an ensemble of states with different values of a hidden variable. Here, we analyse this idea with re ference to currently known theorems and experiments. We argue that the $psi$-ontic/epistemic distinction fails to properly identify ensemble interpretations and propose a more useful definition. We then show that all $psi$-ensemble interpretations which reproduce quantum mechanics violate Statistical Independence. Finally, we explain how this interpretation helps make sense of some otherwise puzzling phenomena in quantum mechanics, such as the delayed choice experiment, the Elitzur-Vaidman bomb detector, and the Extended Wigners Friends Scenario.

Operational frameworks are very useful to study the foundations of quantum mechanics, and are sometimes used to promote antirealist attitudes towards the theory. The aim of this paper is to review three arguments aiming at defending an antirealist re ading of quantum physics based on various developments of standard quantum mechanics appealing to notions such as quantum information, non-causal correlations and indefinite causal orders. Those arguments will be discussed in order to show that they are not convincing. Instead, it is argued that there is conceptually no argument that could favour realist or antirealist attitudes towards quantum mechanics based solely on some features of some formalism. In particular, both realist and antirealist views are well accomodable within operational formulations of the theory. The reason for this is that the realist/antirealist debate is located at a purely epistemic level, which is not engaged by formal aspects of theories. As such, operational formulations of quantum mechanics are epistmologically and ontologically neutral. This discussion aims at clarifying the limits of the historical and methodological affinities between scientific antirealism and operational physics while engaging with recent discoveries in quantum foundations. It also aims at presenting various realist strategies to account for those developments.

In this letter, we point to three widely accepted challenges that the quantum theory, quantum information, and quantum foundations communities are currently facing: indeterminism, the semantics of conditional probabilities, and the spooky action at a distance. We argue that these issues are fundamentally rooted in conflations commonly made between causal dependencies, counterfactual dependencies, and statistical dependencies. We argue that a simple, albeit somewhat uncomfortable shift of viewpoint leads to a way out of the impossibility to extend the theory beyond indeterminism, and towards the possibility that sound extensions of quantum theory, possibly even deterministic yet not super-deterministic, will emerge in the future. The paradigm shift, which we present here, involves a non-trivial relaxation of the commonly accepted mathematical definition of free choice, leading to non-Nashian free choice, more care with the choice of probabilistic notations, and more rigorous use of vocabulary related to causality, counterfactuals, and correlations, which are three concepts of a fundamentally different nature.

The subjective Bayesian interpretation of quantum mechanics (QBism) and Rovellis relational interpretation of quantum mechanics (RQM) are both notable for embracing the radical idea that measurement outcomes correspond to events whose occurrence (or not) is relative to an observer. Here we provide a detailed study of their similarities and especially their differences.
